Very enjoyable meal. The portions were modest, but very well prepared. The salmon in particular was cooked to perfection, with interesting accompaniments. Service was attentive, but somewhat slow -- particularly taking our initial drink order, and then taking our food order. Good atmosphere, and cozy spot.

555 has an exceptionally diverse menu. Their tasting menu captures the best of that variety. Their wine list was impressive an provides numerous options for any palette.

Five Fifty-Five, my favorite restaurant for fine dining in Portland, was just as spectacular as it was in my first visit a few years ago. I most heartily recommend this restaurant to those who love dining. I chose from the Signature Tastings menu with wine pairings.

Each course was presented magnificently, and the tastes did not pale in comparison. I thoroughly enjoyed each wine pairing, and the near perfect portion sizes. The tastings started with a pumpkin soup, then a cheese course. My choices for the 3rd, 4th, and dessert courses were the chicken liver pate, broiled scallops, and dark chocolate fudge cake, each delicious, and well paired.

Kudos to the executive chef, to the sommelier, to the kitchen, the bar, barista, and waiter. I'll be back (when I've saved up my money!)

Eating is for teenagers. DIning is for adults. Come. DIne.

My wife and I ate here very recently after doing the same thing a year ago. This restaurant's food and service are simply superb--very imaginative combination of flavors and ingredients, and very well presented. Highly recommended!!!

Our first trip to Portland, this restaurant was absolutely amazing! I don’t think 5 stars is enough. We ordered the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairing. Our waiter was phenomenal, wine pairing were perfect. The food was a foodie’s dream. I cannot say enough. Definitely a must in Portland!

We were in Portland celebrating our 10 year anniversary and booked Five Fifty Five about a week prior to our stay after reading a bunch of reviews and we are so thankful that we did. Everything from the location, decor, service, to the food itself represented the absolute pinnacle of both customer service and culinary arts. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, and was tastefully decorated for the upcoming Christmas season. It had a comfortable vibe that so many upscale restaurants strive for and fall short of, Five Fifty Five achieved this effortlessly. Our server, Mike, was one of the finest, most knowledgeable servers we've ever had. His passion for both the restaurant he represented, and the food he was serving have been unmatched in our years of dining. We enjoyed the 5 course Chef's tasting with the wine pairing, and every single dish was presented so thoughtfully by Mike and with such passion that we honestly thought he was an owner of the place. It made for a truly special evening for two of us. We will absolutely be returning, and recommending it to all of our friends. Thank you again!

This was an exceptional dining experience. The food food and presentation was fantastic. Started with the grilled octopus and had the steak frites which were both delicious. Service matched the excellent quality of the food. I will certainly be going back when in Portland again

Not exactly sure why this restaurant seems to be so overpriced. Food was somewhat better than mediocre, but decidedly less in quality then what one would expect for the price. More specifically, the entrees for everyone in our party was lukewarm at best. Moreover, the prime rib was raw and there was no question from the waiter as to how each person might wish it cooked. The desert was pumpkin cheesecake, which tasted as if it came pre-packaged from Hannaford's. And not to be overly negative, but the dishes and silverware were significantly water spotted, which would not be a big deal were it not for the price. Aside from that, there were no major disasters.

We went to Five Fifty-five for Thanksgiving this year and the menu they put up was exceedingly tasty. After a salad, the salmon starter was one of the best I have ever had, the turkey was moist and succulent, and the desert yummy. The portion size meant that I was full after the dessert and this was very pleasing as I got to taste all 4 courses. I would go again if in the Portland area

We always go there when In Maine, great tasting menu and super attentive service. It was our anniversary and they greeted us with a comp glass of champagne. The lobster Mac n cheese was a great. My hanger steak was cooked perfectly and delicious. My wife's scallops were super delicious a must stop if in pirtland

I didn't want to believe the sprinkling of negative reviews, however my husband and I ate at Five Fifty-Five two nights ago believing the positive hype would prevail, and we were wrong. We had no problems with the service as other reviewers did - in fact, our waiter was great and food came rather quickly - but we were underwhelmed with the food itself, especially given the chefs' backgrounds. One word: overrated. If you're a true foodie, you will be disappointed. If you're venturing into foodie territory for the first time, perhaps this is a safety net. Portion size was what you'd expect, however the blandness was not. It felt like I was at Del Frisco's or Davios...only, a bit worse. And yes, it was smoky inside given the open-air kitchen. When they began pan-frying steaks the fumes really rose and even created a smog on the second level where we were seated. And yes, the restrooms are in the worst possible location, right by the busy kitchen. I was apologizing to the staff and they in turn were apologizing to me as I waited. (There are only two single bathrooms for the entire establishment.) We skipped the dessert and lamented that we should've eaten at the Fore Street Restaurant right behind our hotel, rather than venturing out on a rainy night for everyday fare. My advice? If you're a foodie looking for a restaurant that sets a high bar and meets it, go to Vinland. You will not be disappointed!

Perfect as always! It was our anniversary and we were greeted with complimentary classes of champagne. My wife had the tasting menu- pumpkin soup (loved the seeds!), beet salad perfectly dressed, lobster Mac and cheese (although not a good thing to take home...), and cheeses (love that brittle!) I had mussels (the best anywhere, and a little spicier than usual), steak frites which was perfectly cooked medium. My wife enjoyed the confections for dessert and I loved the Mediterranean cake. Wine and drinks were excellent too. Service was so well timed, personable, and professional. 555 is THE BEST place in Portland! Never disappoints!

I only have one complaint. We were heading to a show after dinner and our server was more than accommodating to get us out in time. However, when dessert was ordered I also ordered scotch. Our desserts came out, but no drink. It wasn't our server that brought the desserts out so I gave him a few minutes and still no drink. 10 minutes went by and still no drink, and no server. I was going to just cancel the drink because at that point I was going to have to chug the scotch to get out of there. Unfortunately the drink finally came before I could grab someone to cancel it....but everything else was very good.

Got tasting menu. Took 3 hrs for 5 courses. Couple next to us left after 2 hrs & only 2 courses. Disappointed with wine options--typical mega mart bottles in $10-$19 range. Server made wine selections, not the chef. Chef should do this--food is his creation & brings credibility. First course was tomato soup, which I have in my pantry. Second course was manchego cheese, which I love, but I have a block of it from Costco in my fridge. Ribeye was great with spinach purée.

We came to Portland for the weekend and went to 555 based on reviews. It was a special birthday celebration for my wife which they asked about when we made and confirmed the reservation. They sat us at a table along the railing just at the top of the stairs. Terrible table , awkward place for table with servers coming by and coming up and down the stairs. Also the smoke /smell from the kitchen was overwhelming - they need to fix this. They put a tent card on the table saying happy birthday and that was it - how about a small dessert or chocolates or something ? Why ask if you don't intend to do anything special? Service was good. Food was ok. Nothing spectacular or memorable. Even my wife thought it was just ok - and she isn't difficult to please when going out to dinner

We planned ahead to secure restaurant reservations at some of the top spots and were lucky to dine at Five Fifty-five. We were a group of 5 girlfriends and we ordered lots of items from the menu to share and enjoy. We loved the mushroom salad and lobster mac and cheese among everything else that I can't remember. The wine was great too!

Ordered the cheese platter, as advertised it came with fruit , that was a small amount of toast with some odd peanut brittle the cheese was ok. Ordered a sweet potato dish that was very tasty. Then had a the scallops that were dry and tasteless. Sorry would not go back. Annnd this place has to have had the worst bathroom location ever , directly across, within 15 feet , from the serving /kitchen station. Can not be code

Very delicious, but pretty small portions for the price they are asking. Food is very good, what they give you of it. I would only recommend it to a friend with the caveat that they understand that it is expensive and you come away not feeling quite sated. Maybe it was a bad day for produce shopping as it was the middle of the week when we went. The chef is very good just not generous.

We did the tasting menu with wine pairings and itall was incredible. The only thing that would have improved the meal was if we were seated in the main dining room. We were seated off to the side of the bar in the lounge. I had read about the open kitchen and atmosphere of the main dining room but did not see it.

Dinner here was the highlight of our trip to Portland. The only negative was that when we arrived for our reservation they tried to seat us at a table in the bar area, next to a busy doorway. We asked for a better table. After a bit of a wait, they sat us at a nice table along the railing in the upper level.

I've been to 555 many times, and they never disappoint. The tasting menu was great, with just enough food to satisfy, without it being too much. The mussels were particularly good, as were the scallops, and the chocolate fudge cake for dessert was decadent, served with thyme ice cream, which was delicious. I will be back again!

Took one hour to get the starter. Took two hours to get the entree.
The warm mushroom salad was cold. The corn risotto was so under cooked that it was inedible .
The entree s were not hot and so so.
My Aviation cocktail was not cold when I got it and the wine I ordered with dinner had an aftertaste of gasoline.
Our waiter and the other guy were so nice to us, but there was no excuse for the food!
