Steve and Michelle Corry, the proprietors of Five Fifty-Five, arrived in Portland armed with a passionate vision and extensive experience in the restaurant industry. Steve began his culinary career as a brew master at several breweries in Northern California. In 1999, he attended the New England Culinary Institute in Burlington Vermont. After graduating in 2001, he returned to California to work at Domaine Chandon in Napa Valley. A graduate of Boston University with a Bachelor's Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Michelle Corry has worked at numerous prestigious establishments, including the French Laundry in Napa. Together, they have envisioned a dining experience that would combine a comfortable atmosphere, professional service, and fresh, simple, and delicious food sourced locally.
Our second time here and it repeated a great eating experience. We shared three appetizers, foie gras, a cheese plate and the halibut carpaccio and each were fantastic. For dinner I had the scallops and my partner had the salad with buffalo mozzarella--great choices. Service was impecacble, not intruding but attentive. We ate upstairs and there is an open area down to the kitchen--it was a heat wave in Portland and a little hot but the staff did all they could to make it comfortable.
Wonderful meal. Great and attentive service. Lobster Mac and Cheese to die for.
Very very busy and extremely loud. I don’t mind some noise but it was excessive. We had a very earnest waiter. He was trying his best. But I think things on the back end of the house were a bit unorganized and he was unfortunately the deliverer if the bad news each time. Wines on the wine list were unavailable - this is after a few attempts at choosing a bottle of Chardonnay from the wine list. We did receive complimentary glasses of wine. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the truffle mac and cheese with lobster. The lobster was cooked to perfection. Two people had the scallop dish and thought it was amazing . 555 is a nice restaurant and I think they produce very good food. It’s a bit pricey and perhaps better to try on a slower night.
yes: great service, delicious meal, lovely night, perfect atmosphere.
We were underwhelmed by this restaurant. The service was terribly slow despite the fact that the restaurant didn’t seem busy and we only ordered a few appetizers. We were seated upstairs where the waitress seemed to have forgotten all about us after stopping by one time just after our meal was delivered. We would’ve considered dessert but didn’t want to wait another hour to get it
The food was quite adequate, but as Portland offers so many other better dining-out options, why bother?
And to include a pour from a $7 bottle of vino verde among the wine pairings is appalling!
Enjoyed the food and service very much.
All excellent except kitchen exhaust odor strong upstairs. Exhaust filters may need cleaning. My shirt smelled like grease exhaust after leaving restaurant
My boyfriend and I had never done a food and wine pairing before. What a neat experience! And it’s just that —an experience, not just a bite to eat. We learned, we dined, and we enjoyed our time out. Our server Parker was so thoughtful with little touches for my boyfriend’s birthday (like a happy birthday card on the table and providing an extra appetizer taster) on top of all our other tasters and answered all our questions thoroughly. It’s a very elegant place, but very comfortable simultaneously. The food was top notch quality and the wine was so interestingly and deliciously different from what we normally drink. We’ll be back for our next special occasion!!!
This is my 2nd visit to Five Fifty-Five, & as before, I enjoyed a wonderful meal. My husband & I shared local oysters on the 1/2 shell, w/a honey-thyme mignonette, followed by the foie gras torchon, which was accompanied by pickled green strawberries & a strawberry compote. Both were just delicious, with emphatic flavors & textural contrasts. Then Rog opted for the sirloin, which was flavorful & perfectly cooked. My scallops were just as fine, accompanied by a smoked tomato vinaigrette. For our desserts, which the staff packed to go as we were staying nearby, we chose chocolate chip cookies & strawberries & cream. Fancy comfort food. We were very happy. Also of note, the stellar staff. Our primary server gave us excellent advice as to wine choices for each course, & her friendly expertise was most appreciated. We look forward to our next visit.
One of our favorite restaurants in Portland!
amazing. they also accommodated a request for vegan tasting menu for one of the people in our party.
Server was very knowledgeable - especially with food pairing with wine. Pace of food being brought out was excruciatingly slow.
We tried the tasting menu with wine pairing. Rachel was our server and she was amazing and knowledgeable about the food and what wine can be paired with each meal.
First time in Portland for first Friday.
We made reservations well in advance, knowing we would be dining on the 4th of July, to get there and be told we didn’t have a reservation. As i scramble through my phone to let them know i did make a reservation through Open Table, i find an email stating the restaurant cancelled our reservation 15 minutes prior. The 2 hostesses went back and forth with each other about who cancelled it. One even made the comment along the lines of us showing up on the wrong day. Either way they found us a table, but definitely made us feel not exactly welcome. [*side note: the entire time we were there, the restaurant never filled up] the service was fine, nothing to write home about - however, we ordered mussels and didn’t receive them (which fine, we weren’t charged)... and the food same, nothing to write home about. I think we were just expecting more on the service side since there was an issue with the reservation and it was barely acknowledged beyond “we’ll find you a table”
First off, seated at a table and all the tables felt like being in a business setting. Seats had removable stretchy vinyl covers on them and made for less than fine dining vibes. Server kept looking over his shoulder while I was trying to convey our order. Drink of milk punch tastes like water with a teaspoon of red wine with a glass full of ice. Screaming children a couple of tables over made it very unpleasant. I sent back my drink and asked for a French 75 and even that was awful. So bitter I just left it after a couple of sips. Such a basic and classic drink, but they managed to mess that up, too. My husband didn't care for his drink either and asked to see the wine list to play it safe. Server never came back. We discussed requesting to be moved and saw the patrons next to us requested the same. their request was honored cheerfully. When we made the same request, we were told there were no tables for 3. We saw plenty of tables upstairs but we were told they just could not accommodate a party of 3 anywhere else except in the bar area. So we decided to pay for our drinks and leave. We went to our trusted Village Tavern further south. They welcomed us with open arms and no attitude. We live in the Boston area and have plenty of options from casual to elegant. So, ambience, drinks and service were terrible. I guess we cut our losses.
Hello, First off, please let me apologize profusely for your less than stellar experience. At Five Fifty-Five we pride ourselves on the quality of our food and beverages and our customer service. I appreciate your feedback and will address these issues with our staff. If there is anything else you would like to discuss, I welcome the conversation as I am always looking for opportunities to improve our restaurant. Please feel free to reach out to the restaurant for further assistance.
Nice restaurant with relaxed service. Food was good but a little overpriced for what it was.
Our server was very good but the restaurant as a whole was understaffed took us 2 1/2 hours to get our meals. We sat down at 7:30 and didn’t get served till 930 after requesting what’s taking so long.
This is usually one of our favorite restaurants but the service staffing was way off.
Oysters could have been a bit colder, ceviche could have had some nice coarse hymalayam salt added it in the side, the sauces would have stood better up to the fish had they been more complex, interesting, with some more spice heat. My starter cocktail was way too sweet. Service was great!
For many years this establishment has ridden the crest of Portland’s foodie experience- it still is there. The Maine mussels I had were prepared in a tomato butter garlic sauce that is to die for! Sadly, it cane with toasted bread that was beyond burnt, but it was quickly replaced. The grilled romaine Caesar salad was delectable and the ceviche leave one ready for more! The halibut was delectably accompanied by farro and a sauce ( or maybe 2) that were outstandingly prepared. I only wish they’d lighted the place up a bit with a fresh, lighter paint , tear outcthevugky brocade wall paper in the alcoves upstairs and hang in them instead som works from the numerous, excellent local artists to put some bursts of eye candy color in the space to lighten up the atmosphere to match its excellent cuisine. Minor gripes aside (like really terrible sangria at the bar), you can go wrong at 555!
We spent our last evening in Portland dining at 555. We had a fantastic meal and thoroughly enjoyed the service. Definitely on the top if our list next time we are on the seacoast! Highly recommend!
Great service and food. Perfectly done mussels and scallops
Table 35, on the second floor and overlooking the kitchen, was fantastic. The tasting menu with wine pairing was delicious and perfectly paired. Wonderful staff all around.
We were in Portland for two nights and the food at 555 was so good that we ate there both nights! Our daughter has food allergies, and the staff could not have been more accommodating. I had the halibut one night and the chicken the other. I liked the halibut but the chicken (breast and sausage), served with potatoes, asparagus, and mushrooms, was possibly one of the best entrees that I've ever had. The flavors were perfectly balanced--nothing was too overpowering and the flavors of each component were the focus. The selection of sorbets for dessert were outstanding. Favorites were strawberry rhubarb and blackberry sage. We would highly recommend 555 and will definitely be back!
This was my first visit to Five Fifty-Five and I will definitely dine there again! I made a reservation online, and when the restaurant called to confirm they asked about allergies, what we were celebrating (my birthday), and if we had any problems with stairs (the restaurant has two floors). After arriving, we were seated at a lovely table upstairs that had a special card wishing me happy birthday. I ordered the five course tasting menu with wine, and my boyfriend ordered the steak. After our server made sure we were fine with the timing difference of our meals, we were brought delicious bread and chive butter. All of my five courses were very good, and the wines paired nicely. I didn't mind, but there were a couple times when the wine was served several minutes after the food. Not a huge problem, but the timing could have been better. I would highly recommend Five Fifty-Five if you enjoy delicious local cuisine!
Great food and the staff was super helpful. Made for a great birthday dinner
Food and service were excellent. Our waiter was personable and knowledgeable. Only complaint is that we were seated on level two around the balcony and it was quite warm up there!
We did the set menu with the wine pairing- this was awesome food and great wines too. We sat upstairs and it was a tiny bit warm due to the kitchen being below us. Beautiful building. I Highly recommend for dinner.
Amazing food, wine list and cocktail selection. Servers are knowledgable and personable. Best mussels ever!!
Amazing place. Would go again 5 stars
What a delight! We made a somewhat last minute reservation at 555 for our final dinner in Portland. We had spent the past 3 days eating our way around Portland, wrestling the crowds and managing to get mostly bar spots at each place we went. We decided that we were going to step it up a notch and go somewhere a little fancier for our last dinner. We were immediately greeted with smiles and given a table next to the window. Everyone we came into contact with was professional, friendly and knowledgeable. We couldn't be more pleased with the service. We ordered cocktails and a couple starters, none of which disappointed. Visually, our main courses were gorgeous and the flavors were out of this world. Dessert? Yes please. Perfect portion with delicate, yet incredible flavor. No complaints here. Perfection from start to finish. A++
We took our father here for his 83rd birthday, and he was so happy with the food and the service. The service in particular is exceptional. Half of us did the tasting menu and the other half ordered from the menu and it worked out perfectly. Not inexpensive but when you’re in the mood to be treated it’s the way to go!
Food was great. Service very good. Noise level a bit loud but it was Saturday night at 8:00 PM.
Whenever I make a reservation through OpenTable, I get the worse tables. This time, it was in the pathway to the kitchen and we were bumped throughout the entire meal. many other open tables around but we get stuck at the worst. Happens every time with OpenTable. WHY?
Fabulous food and ambience. Very hip and trendy! Would highly recommend!
Booked for a larger group. Great environment, service was amazing! Food was great, 2 people got burgers that were pretty undercooked but literally everything else was stellar. Great place to go!
We arrived and the hostess seated us immediately. The ambient surroundings were very nice looking down on the kitchen and wait staff. The wait staff were very attentive to our needs. The food came and was amazing. We had a show to catch so we had to leave too soon. Looking forward to returning. A very pleasant experience.
