Affordable and diverse brunch menu options: from smoked fish, to various egg recipes, to a pretty good lamb burger. Food is quite tasty without being mind-blowing - felt pretty good value for money. Inattentive and slow service in a nearly empty restaurant undermined the experience
The food was very good. Im not quite sure why I didn’t give it five stars. Something just didn’t feel 100% right. Perhaps we felt felt rushed and neglected at the same time.
The fish and chips lacked seasoning and the fries weren’t plated in an aioli that we just didn’t care for so we were stuck eating tainted fries.
On the positive side, the octopus appetizer was to die for.
The branzino was also very well cooked. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to eat the skin since it wasn’t really cooked to a crisp but wasn’t super easy to remove either.
I would come back if I lived in the neighborhood.
Host first tried to seat 4 of us at at big round table situated next to a huge long table where a party for about 16 people was taking place. We could never have held any semblance of a conversation at that table. When we balked he suggested one other open table for 4 in the back (which was where he should have put us to begin with). If that first table had been the only table available, he should have suggested we wait at the bar for a decent table. The service was blah. No one on staff seemed at all cordial or solicitous. Maybe someone close had died that day? We had to ask for water every time our glasses were empty and the wait for refills was forever. The food was good! So that’s a big plus. Only glitch there was our friend asked waiter about the shrimp dish and waiter said it had 5 shrimp. Dish arrived with only 3 shrimp. Friend unhappy but too pleasant to complain. So I’m doing it for him here. Overall I’d say Fishtag has very good chef who could use some upbeat and charming support at the front of the house.
I was a bit concerned with so many bad reviews but our meal was good. Calamari was tender, could have had a bit more seasoning. Bronzino was very good as well as Clams/pasta. The Ceviche appetizer was good with an excellent presentation. Our waitress and server were both very attentive and knowledgeable.
I'd never heard of Fish Tag, even though I live on the Upper West Side, and now that I've tried it, I will definitely go back. The food was great! I've never eaten the skin of a fish before - never wanted to - but the skin on my fish was so crispy and yummy I ate every bite! Can't remember the dish I had, but it was served with a succotash of corn and green vegetables as well as a pea puree - so light and delicious! Shared an appetizer of gravlax that was first rate, and we also split two desserts. The pumpkin bread pudding was awesome. The apple tart was simply okay. The host - some guy wearing a Batman jacket - was less than charming and welcoming, but our waiter made up for it with his warmth and helpfulness. The decor wasn't fancy but was perfectly fine. If you live on the Upper West Side and you like fish, you should definitely check this place out. If you live in a different neighborhood, the food is definitely worth a subway ride.
Fishtag is almost perfect. The service was great - wait staff helpful but not overbearing. The decor is lovely and the ambience is cozy. There is a wonderful wine and spirits selection. I do wish the menu was slightly more varied and offered a few healthier options. But all in all, it is a great choice for special occasions.
An early saturday night, food is great. room is a bit too dark and service a bit too slow. wine list is small and mostly overpriced. Having many cured fishes on menu is unique and very welcomed.
Salmon tartare was bland, fish quality was superb, but needed some seasoning.
First of all the food was excellent.The mussels in a seafood broth along with chickpeas and fennel was superb.The cod fish and chips was also prepared perfectly.Instead of fries there were I believe were new potatoes(nice and crisp).WE also had 3 shrimp tacos,tuna tartar and a tuna entry which was cooked to the tight temperature,
Service was uneven.While Our starters were delivered in a reasonable time ,they brought our second course while we were finishing the appetizers.I observed the table in front of us and there food was spaced out nicely.I will give the restaurant the benefit of this service blip.However when we were served the mussels we were not given a plate for the shells.
One caveat.The wine prices are marked up an unfair amount.A $14.99 Albarino was priced at $82.This is over a 400% markup.The greek wine from Santarini was also marked up over 400%.
So avoid the wines and order a beer or cocktail which are priced more reasonably.
The manager did comp us on the shrimp Tacos and a small cheese plate.
I would definitely recommend the restaurant for the food and I feel the service would be up to par the next time we go
I've eaten at this place a few times. It's consistently good and I like the vibe of the restaurant. For some reason, there were a few tables of kids this time, which I've never seen. It may be because I had an early reservation. But the food is really good, especially if you're a fan of fish. I had the shrimp appetizer and the branzino. The wait staff was attentive but not overbearing.
Sorry to say that I would not recommend this restaurant. The people were nice, but the food was disappointing. The skin on my branzino was not seared properly, causing it to be very chewy. The Brussels sprouts were quite burnt and there was about a teaspoon of squash purée. My husband said his tuna was good, not great. His meal caused him to be sick all night. We will not return.
We recently dined and enjoyed both food and drinks. Cocktails were delicious and creative. The grilled octopus appetizer was wonderful as were all of our entrees. My only complaint would be the service - our server was very nice, but seemed to be spread thin. We had to flag down the manager to get served at the beginning of our meal, and then had to continue to attract our server's attention later when we needed additional items, the bill, etc. It's too bad since I had such great expectations for this restaurant.
Delicious food. Great wines. Mediocre vegan option (veggie plate only). I selected the restaurant for a business meeting because of the great seafood. Many times a vegan shows up and the planner is unaware of her dietary restrictions. The chef of an outstanding restaurant should keep one nice vegan option handy for these types of dining experiences.
The service was excellent. Our cocktails were creative and excellent. I had the tuna tartare as an appetizer and it was absolutely amazing. It is sold on a bed of herbed ricotta and has homemade garlic chips on top. The texture and flavors were amazing. My husband had the Gravalax and thoroughly enjoyed it.
We both had the Brazino and it was very good.
We got a free dessert as we had checked in to Yelp. I chose the fresh (just ready at 6:30) Baklava and absolutely loved it! My husband tasted it and didn’t. The reason he didn’t love it is because it was not as sweet as a traditional baklava and that’s why I loved it! Fish Tag includes dates in their Baklava and that cuts down on the sweetness. The taste and texture were perfect!
