Fish Hopper Ratings and Reviews
My third visit to the Fish Hopper. I liked it a lot, so this time while in town I organized a business/fun dinner. Only complaint was not having some beers and wines that were on their menu. Great ambience especially while still light. Crashing waves beneath and sea otters/harbor seals frolicking in the kelp.
Decided to dine at this place based on the yelp reviews. Overall it’s a solid 3 stars. We ordered the lobster mushrooms as an appetizer, ahi salad with mango/papaya, their famous clam chowder and the surf and turf as our main course. The salad was ok nothing special about it. The clam chowder was great. The best part of the surf and turf dish was the fillet mignon - almost cooked to perfection. The lobster tail was quite small and tasted ok. I don’t think the entire dish was worth $55 given the portion size.
Sat outside on a 75 degree December afternoon around 2:30pm. Great server, Caesar, who told us the specials for the day and some popular menu items. Rigo always cleared our finished plates promptly, and filled our water glasses. Food was delicious, hot and fresh. We had 4 meals and everyone at our table enjoyed their meals. Can't beat the location right on the water. Highly recommend. I will be back to explore the menu.
My husband and I have been to the Fish Hopper many times and this last was for my birthday. Our waiter was exceptional and went above and beyond to make us happy. He even brought me a bowl of fresh berries and a birthday candle since I am gluten free and couldn't enjoy any of the amazing desserts there.
My swordfish was beautifully cooked and so flavorful!
Sitting outside with the waves crashing below and looking out over the water is one of my favorite things about this restaurant.
The whole experience was perfect!
We will be back!
Steve Nergord, the manager, made our visit especially wonderful! He selected a lovely table with a great view for us and was a perfect host throughout our meal. Our server, Anthony, was also exceptional! He was attentive, made great suggestions and was ever so polite! We didn't expect such a great dining experience in the middle of a "tourist zone". This is a definite "repeat". Thank you!
The food is ok but service is terrible.
We waited 10 minutes to get water served and found one of the glasses are broken. They forgot to serve the soup which should come first. Servants start put movable window on just beside our table. Can they just wait for a while and do it after we left?
The main courses are good but the award winning clam chowder is terrible. I am not sure if they serve the soup too late, close to when they are ready to call it a day. The soup is sticky and salty.
We met a former employee working at another restaurant, who found out that we were going to The Fish Hopper the next day (Thanksgiving Day). He gave us a few names that work at the Fish Hopper, to hello. They, at the Fish Hopper, all remembered the former employee with great admiration, as he did with fond admiration of the Fish Hopper employees. We were treated very professionally.
We were overall disappointed. We were two couples looking for a nice dining experience. What we encountered was a noisy environment and they even had on background music that added to the din. The music selection itself was noisy and not soft dining music. The floor was dirty and the service was not great. The food was enjoyable. The location is wonderful and the view great, but there are many restaurants nearby with great food and great views. I would not recommend to those who are looking for a nice evening out.
Three of us were at your restaurant for Thanksgiving. I was disappointed with the food and prices. Business was bustling and the wait-staff was working hard. I had the salmon with crusted prawns..overcooked prawns and not very flavorful salmon; the plain white rice was mediocre. My 90 year old father ordered the Thanksgiving meal but only ate a few bites. Turkey looked dry to me.
We did find the appetizer (a spicy prawn dish) very good!
I chose this restaurant due to favorable reviews but wouldn't return. My husband and I are from Seattle and are used to lots of tasty seafood.
Probably would have scored the Fish Hopper slightly higher except for one thing. We made a note in our Open Table reservation that two members of our four person party were using walkers to get around. So which table do you think they sat us at? Yep...Furthest one from the check in counter. Really? We walked past dozens of open suitable tables. And the greeter even made a remark about the walker comment in the reservation so it wasn't like they missed it.
Come on team--THINK ABOUT IT
We were seated next to a window with a fantastic view of the bay. We presented our card for a free appetizer, and were presented with the shrimp cerviche and tortillia appetizer. It was so tasty with the tangy and spicy tomato based sauce mixed with fresh shrimp. Fresh sourdough rolls were also brought to our table.
For our entrees, my girl ordered the 10 oz lobster tail with steamed rice. She said it was cooked to perfection and melted in her mouth.
I ordered the 20 oz. Bone in Ribeye with baked potato and Caesar salad. The steak was delicious.
We ended the meal with the Creme Brulee for desert. This was given to us on the house.
Our server, Jose, did a fantastic job.
We frequent the Fish Hopper every time we go to Monterey. The view, ambience, food and service are consistent and top notch.
Just not very good- entrees arrived while we were still eating our starters, the white and the red wine that was served was not the wine I had ordered. Just touristy - not too expensive but for what they serve quite expensive. Wouldn’t recommend to go there if you would like to have a decent meal.
The entire experience was wonderful! The only negative was that we both had a ceasar salad before our meal and as I normally enjoy a non chopped salad, neither of ours were good. We were served the hearts of the romaine that were too far in the center and were very bitter and yellow. Also, there was little or no dressing on the salad. Everything else was wonderful and very flavorful.
Asian short ribs with mashed potatoes and Asian slaw. Friend had spicing shrimp alfredo pasta. With some cocktails expresso martini and Don Julio margaritas. Jumbo prawns and calamari appetizers. Miss this place and the people stop is always great. Jose is the best. @ THE FISH HOPPER
Went out here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Beautiful scenic restaurant right above the beach.
Great food, I had the swordfish wife had the surf n turf (filet mignon and Lobster) both were presented beautifully and tasted great. For drinks we shared the very tasteful "Volcano" which was plenty as it was a large drink.
The dessert was an amazing finisher Brownie and ice cream....the most moist and delicious brownie I've had in a long while. Will definitely return in the future
Lovely place for a perfect sunset view, just right for celebrating a birthday. The food was delicious! The service was good. As this was a special occasion, dessert was part of the plan. We were surprised when it was not offered to us, beyond the complimentary ice cream and brownie that came to the birthday guest. That ended up being happily consumed by the 6 year old at the table, but some of the adults were looking forward to options from their terrific dessert tray. We did ask for dessert, but were embarrassed by a comment from our server about “one dessert wasn’t enough?” Given the beautiful location, and the delicious food, we are likely to return. I suspect there was some explanation for what felt awkward to us.
We were celebrating a wedding anniversary for relatives visiting from out of town with a simple lunch. Talk about amazing service! All the staff pitched in to make it wonderful from the waiter to the person clearing the table. We requested a view when booking and they did not disappoint. I would recommend to anyone who wants to make a simple lunch into a celebration! The food was awesome too!
Went for dinner with friends on a Thursday night. Server was attentive and very good. We had a coupon for a complimentary "chef's choice" appetizer which was a shrimp ceviche, very nice. I had the Dungeness crab-stuffed shrimp angel hair pasta and it was excellent. My husband had the seafood pasta and he liked it a lot. One of us had the sand dabs and she said they were good. Her husband had the halibut fish and chips which he said were okay, but he's a picky eater and not much of a foodie, so I take that comment with a grain of salt, so to speak. Great place for a nice dinner with a date or for a special occasion.
If location is everything, then Fish Hopper has it all. We enjoyed our expectedly pricey dinner with nice Napa wine, no complaints. But the location was the best part. Waves crashed below us while seals(?) cavorted in the bay. It was a particularly lovely night for late October (according to my local hosts.)
(I'm from Boston, so anyone claiming to have the "best clam chowder" had better be able to back up the claim. It was good. Different than Boston, but good. Not sure what kind of clam they use but the chunks were chewier than what I expected. But again, no complaints.
