The location and server were great. The food was just ok. What you would expect for a touristy place on the water. They advertise happy hour every day 3:30 to 7 but don’t be fooled, it’s just in the bar not in the restaurant.
Very poor experience.
There was absolutely no fish in their poke and we had to send it back to the kitchen... The service was mediocre and the food definitely not worth the price.
Food was Ok (noting unusual ) and very pricy for that quality and quantity of food ( I am from Seattle and I know about seafood meals and prices). But service was very bad (very slow, inattentive), like "Eat and go away". And no even excuse for all those things. I think I will not go to this restaurant again.
Great location. Well prepared dishes.
At the last minute, late afternoon on Friday, we went to Trip Advisor to find a moderately priced place for seafood for dinner. I was particularly looking for shrimp and crab. The crab tower appetizer didn’t disappoint. I’ve never had an appetizer so full of crab that was more than enough for 2 people to share. It was delicious. My entree, the Alii Skewers had tender chunks of beef that were very flavorful. The rice, mango relish, sauce and sautéed local veggies accompanied the meal excellently. The grilled shrimp too, I just wish they gave you more than 3 shrimp on the skewer because I love shrimp. I don’t usually have dessert because after I’ve had a great meal, I tell myself your stomach is satisfied; don’t do it or don’t add more calories. But, this time I went beyond my usual self- moderation and had a slice of the chocolate cake with passion fruit. First, to my surprise, it was gigantic slice. My husband and I had more than enough to share. Second, it was fantastic! I don’t like desserts that are overly sweet, but this was just right. I’m wondering if the addition of the passion fruit had something to do with somewhat ramping down the sweetness? But, I would definitely order that dessert again.
We were celebrating my husband’s 75th birthday. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing!! We highly recommend! They treated us like we were royalty. A friend recommended this place and it did not disappoint. We all had the Ono fish which was perfectly cooked. The only thing which is quite minor, was the extremely slippery floors due to all the rain. It was like an ice skating rink. The drinks and desserts were fabulous too! We can’t wait to go back!
I went to the Hopper for Valentine's day with a couple friends; I always in my life have NOT gone out on this holiday due to the crowds and probably should have listened to my heart on this as the experience was less than the usual Hopper experience. First: they were running behind (I had made a reservation weeks in advance), even though I requested a view table I was told I could not have one and was given the WORST table in the restaurant - high traffic right outside the kitchen; I ordered the special dinner for two - oddly there was only one serving of veg and potato but everything else was very tasty. I LOVE this restaurant and will always return, but never again on the special occasion days.
Excellent as always. Fish Hopper is my favorite!!!!
Wonderful romantic evening!!! Valentine's day could not have been better thanks to Fish Hopper Manager Joel and Vicki. Thanks to all for making this such a great night on the town!
Our Valentine’s dinner at Fish Hopper was a bit of a disappointment to say the least.
I had requested a table with a view of the ocean (I made the reservation and request over a week in advance) and we were seated in the third row of tables with a couple with wide brimmed hats obstructing what view we had.
I had a free appetizer voucher which they wouldn’t accept because of Valentine’s.
The food was mediocre, underwhelming and over priced!
We will never return!
Highly recommend the Alii Skewers (2 skewers of steak bites & 1 skewer of grilled shrimp) from their regular menu. But if the jumbo scallops are available as a special, they are a must try. The view of Kailua Bay (across the street) if fantastic, but the noise from the street can make I hard for conversations. If you can, try seating a little further back or in one of the booths. Friendly wait staff. Recimended as a leisurely meal, not for a quick bite.
Great restaurant. Always large portions. Always excellent fresh food.
One of our favorite places to eat. Never disappointed. Get reservations and ask for a table at the rail near the street. Great views.
Neither my husband or I thought our food was very good. I had fish and chips and it was just ok and my husband had scallops with risotto....hohum.. we ordered a piece of coconut pineapple cake that had no taste at all.
Best thing about our meal was the server...she did a very nice job.
Would not recommend this place.
GOod food and service. Have us a window table as requested. Very satisfied.
Awesome service and terrific food as always!
Visiting Hawaii for the second time my wife and I found the people of the big island to be kind, caring and genuine. These same "attributes" we found in the staff at the Fish Hopper...we can't wait to return to the Hopper because of the menu and it's people. Vicki was the best as well as the trainee.
The shrimp ceviche app and Ono entree were both fantastic. The parm crusted mahi was good but crust was a little much and over done. Still overall a great dinner and experience. Will still gladly revisit next time on the island!
Delicious fresh fish options and impeccable service. Our waitress Andrea was outstanding! We were happy to have her each time we ate there. In fact we are there numerous times during our stay. Can’t wait to go back next year.
We have been to the Fish Hopper many times, both in Kailua-Kona & Monterey, California. The food is always great, excellently prepared & displayed. They have an early bird special at 5:30 or so which is a 3 course dinner with slightly smaller portions which we love except when I'm really hungry & then I order a regular meal. Their clam chowder is fantastic & all of their fish dishes are fresh local. They have a dessert tray with a large assortment of incredible looking cakes & pies.
We went to Fishhoppers because of reviews and location. The open air restaurant is on the waterfront with good views of the bay. We had reservations but as we didn’t request on the water were seated in the next row. Still good review. Service was prompt. The mai this hit the spot. Our group had the fish and chips, grilled ono, Parmesan crusted mahi mahi, and the shrimp. All were perfectly prepared and large portions. Vege sides were also good. We had cheesecake with passion fruit and a flourless chocolate cake. The cheesecake was the best. The passion fruit sauce made it. Overall good dinner was pricey for atmosphere and what we got.
We love the Fish Hopper and stop in a few times each year on our visit to the island. Service was lacking this time, but usually a great place.
Great food... the egg white wrap is exceptional!
Always had a good meal at Fishhopper Kailua-Kona. From drinks to dessert, you can't miss. The lilkoi cheesecake is so tasty. I would go there for it. Fresh fish and local ingredients, fresh vegies, fresh fruit and delicious cocktails. The view can't be beat. You can get an oceanview from every table.
We had an amazing dinner and would return again.
Great food. Great server.
We usually come here every time we are in Kona. This time was very disappointing. The claim chowder was cold and we had to ask them to heat it up - which they did, but it never should have left the kitchen cold. Our meal was the lobster paella and it was just barely warm - usually they have great food and it is delivered hot. So this time, I can not recommend as a good place to go.
Was pretty delish.
This was our second visit to Fish Hooper in the past week, and both times the food was cold and not very good. We will not go back.
