Very neat atmosphere and great menu. Disappointed in pork chop toppings not being freshly made appeared to be canned peaches. Appetizers of mussels and calamari were both outstanding.
For a Sunday night the service was a bit slow. We were sitting for about 15 minutes before our waiter came by ! The food was good ! And value was also good.
With parents weekend at Bates College it took us three tries to get a reservation to this restaurant but the wait was worth it. Friendly staff and a lovely setting in a restored Lewiston mill, the food is outstanding.
Whenever we're back in Lewiston this will be the place we'll want to go.
Always worth the drive; cool setting and interior in an old mill building; warm, friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Service was stellar -- some of the best I've ever seen; kudos to Stacie! Food is always good, but I wish Fish Bones still had the superb grilled fish on their menu that gave them their name... and maybe a few more seafood dishes, too (although the Damariscotta oysters were lovely). Menu has been reduced in size and now includes more meat dishes, but prices are a little lower, too.
The food is always very good, though the portions could be a tad smaller. The ambiance is nice, with one exception: there was a noisy group that made conversation difficult at times. The cure is simple: a few good and well-placed acoustic ceiling panels. This is a complaint I have about many (otherwise good) restaurants these days: too often the ceilings are bare and highly reflective, making the noise level unnecessarily a major distraction (to put it mildly). This isn't very hard to fix, but owners don't seem to be interested in that aspect.
We were 3 couples together for a pre- theatre dinner seated in a smaller room off the bar area. As our meal went on, a party of at least 12, a party of 3 and a party of 2 were also seated in this room. The party of 12 were celebrating a birthday, I believe, and became outrageously loud. We could not hear our own conversations, so a gentleman in our party went over and politely asked if they could keep it down. He was followed by the gentleman in the party of 3 asking the the same thing. The large party was a bit snarky in their reply, but did keep it down a bit, although it was still too loud. We do not blame the large party - they have a right to celebrate loudly and we have a right to have a quieter dining experience. The restaurant should have seated us (and the other smaller parties) elsewhere and allowed the large party to have the room. I know for a fact that the 2 couples with us will never return to Fishbones, nor will they recommend it to their friends because of this incident. It was the first time at the restaurant for both and both eat out very frequently.
Four of us had the Duck Confit which was good, however, a bit too smokey without balancing that flavor. The Lobster with Pea Ravioli was better. On a positive note, the Salmon was fabulous as was the bread basket mixture, the oysters and the salads (although, the burrata and tomato salad should have been served at room temperature - not cold!). Our waitress was terrific!
Excellent experience, over all. Outstanding service, high quality food and very pleasant, comfortable, clean environment.
Our second visit in the last two years[ we are not from lewiston but pass through often]. The kitchen works flawlessly, even with a full house. The creative dishes are sure to please-my mussels with maple infused sausage were wonderful. Service is friendly and professional, even on a very busy night. The noise can be deafening, however. We will definitely return.
I'm usually a big fan of Fishbones, and it was a great birthday dinner; however, the quality of the food we ordered was a bit disappointing. We had reservations for four people and two of my guest ordered the Filet and Frites and although the steak and fries come out in a frying pan ( you would think the pan would be hot) the food was lukewarm, almost room temperature. Asking to reheat steak and fries was not an option without overcooking it, so we just dealt with it. The server was kind, efficient and very friendly as was the hostess who helped me pick out a birthday dessert with a candle. It wasn't a terrible experience, but I've had better quality food here previously. Maybe my expectations were too high.
Noise level was a little loud indoors, so we moved to an outside table, which was great.
We live in Portland, but we always find that Fish Bones is worth the 40-minute drive to Lewiston. Much easier than navigating the Portland's Old Port on a Saturday night! We love the historic architecture, the interesting mill- and fish-themed decor, the spaciousness that allows for easy conversation despite the full house, and the dependably delicious and filling food. We shared a focaccia appetizer with fresh mozzarella. I had salmon with a wonderful potato-leek pastry. My husband had a steak salad. We took home the bread (including zucchini bread!) to have for breakfast the next morning!
The food and service were excellent! We made a reservation and were taken right in. Our only complaint is that it is quite noisy and hard to hear people especially in the back room. Otherwise, it was wonderful!
Absolutely delicious food, always! I've never had a bad meal here. Our server was very good, attentive and knew all the answers to how food was prepared or what it had in it. I always recommend Fish Bones and enjoy going there.
Ate there while traveling in the area - came back during my 2nd visit to Auburn, ME because I remembered the food was great. Sat out on the deck and it was a glorious evening with good food and wine.
The raw Oysters were OK...waitress wasn't sure of the origin, and we were not sure why they was served in a skillet, also the fork provided was too big. The Lobster Bisque was too thick and too spicy. Not prepared in the traditional way therefore we were not ready for it. Could not finish it because of the taste. The steak was good but had to request it NOT to be served in a skillet but on a heated plate instead. The brisket sandwich was OK. What are Penobscot Frites? The raw Tuna appetizer was very good as was the Pinot Noir. We have ate at Fishbones for over 10 years and preferred the food as it was 7 or 8 years ago. It was a good selection of seafood and traditional American meat dishes then. We had not been back to eat inside for some time for some of the reasons given above, because we were disappointed then, so we thought we would give it another try on Saturday night...unfortunately we are still disappointed. It appears the chef is a little to ambitious. So unless something changes we will not return any time soon!
We had a lovely time and will return. We would recommend highly. Our server was lovely.
I’ve never had a bad experience here. I do like the lunch menu more than the dinner menu. Dinner menu is a little dated, but the tuna chrisp and pine bowl at lunch are SO GOOD.
Always a good meal and great service! This is the forth time we've eaten here. With our daughter at Bates College, we will be back many more times in the next 3 years:)
Things I liked about Fish Bones is that we were not rushed, we were able to take our time with drinks and appetizers before having dinner. The outside seating is very comfortable. We have also been there for lunch and it was very good, lots of interesting items on the menu.
We are from out of town and our hotel recommended the restaurant. What a fantastic find! The food was creative and the flavors were excellent! Fresh seafood, great atmosphere, patio was nice even though the view is of a parking garage. The price point was a surprise in th right way, great value for the price point.
This was a friendly and welcoming place. We were greeted and seated cordially, our server was helpful and responsive, and we enjoyed the whole thing. The menu has some creative choices on it and our server accommodated us by allowing us to order one course at a time instead of all at once. I'd go back without hesitation.
Amazing service, wonderfully decorated, only wish I had more time! So good!!
Our favorite spot in town. Love the bread and local beer list.
We just keep going back. It’s just that good! We like that the menu changes frequently and there are always great specials.
The food is always delicious and the service lovely.
Terrific food. Wife had haddock. I had the chop. Both were excellent. The maple, oven roasted carrots are superior!
Our server was wonderful...energetic, knew the menu...great service.
Only downside was the first glass of chardonnay. Wife didn't like it and the server apologized and immediately brought another selection which she preferred.
Everything was great! Must order the pork belly poutine, the fries alone are perfectly cooked and the sauce is magical. My boyfriend is from Boston and said the lobster roll he had here was one of the best he’s ever eaten!
It was 6:00 on a Thursday and there were maybe 6 occupied tables when we ordered. It took 53 minutes for our entrees to show up and my vegetables on the scallops were cold. That was ok because the were blanched but I dont think they were supposed to be served that way. The server was terrible for such a good restaurant. The young man checked on us one time from taking our order until the check arrived. One time in 90 minutes! No excuse. Seemed like a kid that was a little too laid back.
Very good food, staff, atmosphere. Will definitely come back again!!!
Food was great as always - we asked for a quiet table and they gave us one. Most of the restaurant is a bit noisy but they seated us in a quiet corner and the hearing impaired among us were fine.
We have eaten at Fish Bones many times but this was our first visit since the built there outdoor seating. They did a very good job, really enjoyed eating outside since our summers are so short. I hope they install fire heaters so we can utilize this outside dining as it starts to get colder in the fall.
Loooove the new menu (I had a burrata tomato salad, home made ravioli with peas a tons of lobster, their home made bread too... a watermelon water infused drink before dinner and then a delicious Pinot Noir with my meal. No room for their homemade desserts though.)They offered to make a meal from their old menu( land and sea) for someone at our table but he found something new to try. They offered great specials along with the new menu and new patio. Our drinks and meals were exceptional. The quality of Fishbones’ service and food is better than ever. Previously my compliment would have been it was consistent. I knew I’d get a very good meal but they have upped their game yet it didn’t feel fancy. Who needs fancy? The vibe last night was comfortable yet happening. Thanks for a delicious meal and a fun Thursday night in LA!
One of the best spots in Lewiston!
Food was excellent and service was great. I highly recommend it.
Fishbones is great! Friendly people, nice menu, excellent prices, and good wine selection. What's not to like?
Excellent service and the food was very good
Nice restaurant, excellent food, in an old mill in Lewiston, just across the river from Auburn. Have the wings
Went to Fish Bones for a anniversary dinner. Was greeted right away and seated promptly. Waitress was friendly and out going. Ordered a appetizer (lobster rangoons) had the lamb dish. Everything was delicious and very satisfying. Will definitely go back.
A little disappointed. We went here a few months ago and it was fantastic. We couldn’t wait to go back. On this visit it seemed like an ambitious menu that the staff couldn’t execute. The roasted corn was even cold!
Fishbones is one of our favorite restaurants when we are in LA. The food is outstanding, the atmosphere is laid back, fun, and modern and the owners, who are usually helping out, are there to chat with. I highly recommend Fishbones!
