First & Oak at the Mirabelle Inn
The food was delicious and beautiful when presented. We love the choose your own tasting menu and we tried so many things. The Pan roasted sea bass with caviar veloute was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
The cannelloni of scallops and crab were unique and texturely- perfect the kimchi cracklings, fun to eat and share. The baby gem salad, I could eat it every day and I would love that Green Goddess dressing recipe.
The only problem was the dessert, they were not good.
The cheese option came with cauliflower, said it was carmalized, it was not, not good, no touch of sweetness and not a nice way to end the meal with large chunks of Swiss cheese.
The deconstructed version of Tiramisu did not have that luscious cream or sharp distinctive coffee taste. It came with some strange torn bread, again not sweet.
I would definitely return for the savory, pass on dessert.
My wife and I heard good things about this restaurant and can honestly say, nothing we heard did it justice. Tonight’s meal was one of the best we’ve ever had. We can’t recommend it highly enough, please try it for yourself. Every dish was amazing, no way to pick a favorite. It is also an excellent value, they should be charging much more, but don’t tell them. We’ve paid much more for food that was not near as good. Kudos to the entire staff, especially April and Tommy. You all couldn’t have been more accommodating. We will be back, and we will be spreading the word. Well done!
Great tasting menu experience. Kimchi cracklings we’re out of this world.
Loved the portion sizes - it gave me a chance to try several dishes without filling up on any one thing! And all of it was quite excellent, as was the service. Definitely will return.
We have been to this restaurant before (we live locally) and have had a nice meal. The food was very good. We would recommend the Kimchi Cracklings and the Gem salad. We also enjoyed the short rib and the desserts were wonderful. However, this time it was very noisy. The waitress insisted in using her playground voice instead of her indoor voice, so all you could hear was an endless description of what was being served at an earsplitting volume. Service should be unobtrusive so that people can have a conversation with their guest. It is not necessary for the staff to get verbal permission to serve the food, refill a water or wine glass, and it is not necessary to continually ask if we like the food. I would expect much more from a Michelin recognized restaurant. The food was good, but I am not sure it was good enough to endure the pretentious service
Had a wonderful Father’s Day dinner here.
Chef is trying and experimenting too much and doesn’t really know how to work with flavor and texture. It just doesn’t taste good despite best intentions.
Hi, I am sorry to hear we missed the mark. I would love to hear more details about what you ate for dinner. We don't normally receive reviews like this so we truly would like to have the opportunity to chat with you and find out exactly went wrong. Since we don't have your contact information it would be great if you can call us at 805.668.1703 and ask for Jonathan. Thank you.
A hidden gem!! Such a charming-quaint setting with innovative and tasty food preparation You just don’t expect this type of a dining experience in Solvang Our waitress Alex, was amazing and knew the menu like she created it herself. She definitely made our experience one that will make us come back again. Do yourself a favor and the next time you’re in Solvang dine at First & Oak!!
Great meal served impeccably. Food was inventive, including kimchee in unexpected but delicious ways. Best dish was a mix of scallops and crab in paper-thin pasta. Only disappointment was that they do not have a liquor license; after our superb dinner I would have liked to have a snifter of cognac.
Truly an enjoyable evening. Food was top quality and delicious. Loved the tete de moine cheese desert. For those with less refined tastes, the chocolate mousse was also a delight. The best restaurant in Solvang by far. Next time will try to stay at the Mirabelle so we can taste the breakfast!
Wonderful dinner in every way.
The staff was not very attentive, she forgot our sparkling wine as aperitifs, she poored from our bottle of sparkling water to the people at another table. We had lobster bisque as starter, which was very tadty. I had the cannelloni with scallops as main course, and it was served with popcorn (!!!) on the top! Not very tasty, and together with the corn and vanilla, it was way too sweet. A very strange Tiramisu completed the dinner. In conclusion: too strange food for our taste palett.
Great culinary experience
The 3-course meal options were hard to pick because they all seemed so fetching. Each of our courses were outstanding, extremely delicious and prepared with the skill of an expert chef. The ambience was warm and cozy. The service was both competent and friendly.
Ambiance: The ambiance was cozy and elegant. Big Plus!
The Staff: Friendly but their attire did not fit the atmosphere the restaurant was or is trying to create (upscale dining)
Food: The food was OK but could be improved.
The two dishes I enjoyed were the Lobster Bisque and the Tete Du Monde. My least favorite was the Kimchi Risotto, too many flavors clashing at once and made worse by the citrus.
Wowza!! One of the best meals I have ever experienced! My boyfriend and I dined here this past Saturday for the first time, and I was blown away by the perfection of every course, as well as the quaint setting and feel of being in a fairytale cottage.
We chose the Premier tier for dinner and each enjoyed one selection from "To Begin," two from the "From the Ocean & Farm" category, and one from "To Finish." We absolutely adored our chosen items--my boyfriend loved the Lobster Bisque and I was over-the-moon for the Truffled Roasted Cauliflower (honestly, anything with truffle is a no-brainer pick for me). The presentation of each was beautiful, and we appreciated that they were explained in detail once brought to our cozy table. Next we both experienced the Cannelloni of Diver Scallop & Dungeness Crab (smooth, fresh, and exquisite), followed by the Short Rib Bourguignon (rich, hearty, and divine). Our last course was so heavenly I teared up. The Chocolate Mousse was out-of-this-world, and I became a tad emotional devouring each bite. My boyfriend enjoyed his selection of the Caramelized White Chocolate Ice Cream, as well, but unlike me, he didn't cry over how his taste buds were tickled.
As far as our beverages, their dessert and red wine selections were sweet and satisfying, in fact, their sweetest dessert wine was just the cherry on top of an incredible dinner. We were there for a little over two hours, so do allow a bit more time than you normally would for a meal. There could have been less time in between courses, so perhaps on our next visit, we would request that our items arrive somewhat quicker so that we would have more time to explore Solvang in the evening.
Excellent food, very attentive service and nice ambiance. The option to choose the level of set menu worked wonderfully. The kimchi risotto was especially delicious!
The only confusion was upon entering: there is a desk instead of a host stand so many guests would come in and be directed back out to the desk to check in. We were seated near the dining room entrance so that was mildly disruptive but not too bad.
First an Oak is not inexpensive, that being said, they aim high and I give the food experience high marks for challenging and innovative fare. Be advised portion sizes are small but the richness of the entres was such that I felt full after the second course and ended up saving my second entree for a magnificent breakfast. Desert and wine list are good but I wasn't as impressed with the by the glass selections. No one in the Santa Ynez Valley is doing what they are doing so for a foodie its a worthwhile stop.
Having celiac is very difficult and this chef prepared not only the most beautiful dishes but also the most delicious. Thank you so much for making my birthday so great!
Food was amazing. Loved that they gave options for 3-5 course meals. My boyfriend and I were able to share the 4 course meal for a $10 fee. Although the plates were smaller, they were filling and delicious. The service was great and the staff was very knowledgeable about the menu.
Service was superb. Food was a bit disappointing. Great wine.
Service can make the difference. Although our server was pleasant enough, there were little things that could've made this awesome. We were not offered a glass of wine as we perused the menu, and I finally had to ask if we could each get a glass of sparkling before making our wine and menu selections. Still water was refilled with sparkling (and really - charging for sparkling?). Then, I tried to call the hotel for hours that evening and next morning to see if a phone had been found and the call was never answered. When I finally just drove over, there was a representative sitting at the concierge desk - so why was the phone not answered?
Atmosphere - adorable and cozy. Clean and comfortable environment that was perfect for the intimate date. The lights were dimmed perfectly, soft music in the back.
Food - exceptional. Great flavor profiles fit for a foodie. The portions were perfect.
Wine - I tried several wines by the glass from their robust list. There were many local options, loved that. They always give you a taste before pouring.
Service - easily the best service we received while in Solvang. Kind and attentive, not pushy at all. Knowledgeable staff.
Value - wonderful value for the quality. We would certainly love to stay at Mirabelle Inn some day and dine at this restaurant again.
Over cooked fish for four dishes. Too sweet for entree. Not sweet enough dessert. Three hour dinner
We have now been there 4 times and this visit was by far the best. Just keeps getting better!
Absolutley fantastic. My fiance and i have made this a yearly tradition to come here and just have amazing food in a perfect location in Solvang. Get ready for a trip to Flavor Town!
First and Oak was an amazing dining experience. We enjoyed the menu selections and wine choices.
A must stop in Solvang. Everything was superb from the ambiance, wine selection, the courses. We were absolutely blown away at the dedication to the small things.
It’s a special place with special food. We went to celebrate our birthdays. It was a great dining experience! Fun to taste so many delicious dishes.
First & Oak is an absolute winner! You cannot go wrong here. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the friendly staff. They walk you into the restaurant which seems like a private room with only about 12 tables or so in the whole place. Definitely an intimate setting. We were lucky enough to go when nobody else was in the room and had the whole place to ourselves. We went during offseason and had a late reservation.
They have their traditional wine list with many price points and some popular favorites such as Silver Oak and Opus One as well as some local favorites. They also have a separate list that’s hand picked by their sommelier of wines that he has recently picked up that they don’t have year round. He came to our table and helped in picking our wine. You can tell the wealth of knowledge he has and was a great help in figuring out exactly what we wanted.
The menu is a make your own tasting menu. 3 different price points where you can have 3,4, or 5 courses. We went with the 5 course and the price is extremely affordable. As soon as our first dish arrived it was a fantastic experience. Each dish is put together so well. The presentation is great but most of all the food is amazing. Handcrafted meals that are exploding with flavor.
I’ve been to many restaurants around the world and eaten at many fine restaurants. This one is up there with one of my favorites. From the intimate setting to the friendly staff and the delicious food, it’s not hard to tell that you’re dealing with people who not only love what they do, but they do it well. This restaurant doesn’t care about turning tables over and cycling people through. They want you there to enjoy the experience they’ve created. To me a good restaurant sets it self apart by how it makes you feel, and this one delivers.
We had a wonderful experience at First & Oak. We will definitely plan to stay at the Mirabelle in the near future.
Great ambience and service, the overall idea is awesome! I loved the idea of the food and you could tell the chef was creative...it was just too much/too many elements on the plate. It was confusing and disjointed...a simpler approach ( like 2 or 3 elements) would show the food and the chef off in a more positive way! I will give them one more shot to see if it becomes more focused. I predict if they do this place will rock!!
Very special evening. Food and services were fantastic, atmosphere was intimate. Everything was great!
Great place with excellent food. Restaurant had tasting menu only with price fix options. Service and quality was superb.
Great food - fantastic service - in the Danish Capital of California
Everything was amazing!!
One of the best small plate/chef experimental experiences ever.
Always an excellent dining experience!! The creativity involved in preparing and plating the food is top notch, and the dining space is beautiful. The service staff is excellent as well.
