About Firefly Restaurant
We serve food that, more often than not, accesses that part of our deepest soul where genuine expression can flow forth. We have always tried to give our food and service our best selves, as honest and vulnerable as we can muster. We strive to be a place where you might actually have a real connection; maybe with your server, maybe with your food or maybe with your possibly dorky host who is ACTUALLY glad you’re there.
Oh, you wanted a restaurant description? Sorry. Can’t really help you there. We’re not so big on labels. Our food is hard to nail down as we are constantly evolving and entirely seasonal and personal. We’ve used “Food you eat” as a tag line on occasion and that remains accurate. We could also describe it as “Food we really want you to eat”. When you’re here, tell us what you would call it.

Firefly Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Firefly never disappoints…always good choices from an ever-changing menu with local ingredients and fresh options. Nothing goes unnoticed and the service is terrific. A complete gem that is slightly hidden, but seek this out and enjoy a delicious and appropriately priced meal. Loved the s'more for desert - just right!!
This was my third visit to Firefly over the last several years, and another "best-of" dinners in my memory. The menu is creative and accessible with many gluten-free options (which are not second-best to the other choices). My guests and I enjoyed every last bite of our meal and left happy. I love the friendly and casual, yet professional, vibe in this cozy neighborhood restaurant. Will definitely be dining here again.
Firefly, continues to be a very good restaurant with an innovative menu. There are excellent vegetarian options. Given the quality of the food and the space, prices seem high compared to other similar restaurants and just as high as at higher end restaurants. Appetizers and some desserts seem to be particularly high. Overall I still recommend the restaurant
Our evening at Firefly was lovely!! We have some dietary restrictions and were entirely satisfied with the range of choices from aperitif to dessert! Because I am gluten-free, rarely do I have luscious warm bread to nibble with my salad! Not so at Firefly! Dining at Firefly has never disappointed! It's always a treat!
Our service was really unpleasant. No sense of pleasure in the wait staff, they were brusque to the point of rude, my food was whisked away while I was still eating, there was a sense that we were not wanted there in that restaurant. Very unpleasant. it saddened me as it gave a tinge to our holiday celebration that was not nice. I would not go back there which is sad to me since it is a lovely neighborhood joint. Brussel sprouts and sweet potato starters were delicious as was the porkshop but other stuff was salty.
We had a reservation last Sunday at 5:30 pm. The waitress rushed us since the beginning. When we ordered our food, she told us right away that the food that we ordered wasn't enough for the 4 of us without asking her opinion. We were enjoying our dessert, and she just took our plate without asking if we finished it. We will never come back!
Wine by the glass is wildly overpriced for bottles likely purchased at Costco. Food was delicious, but they charge for bread. They sat us at a table closest to the front door despite being early arrivals. Entrees were overpriced. We split everything, bread, salad, brussel sprouts and enchiladas and our bill came to 90 bucks with tip. They also add an additional surcharge that seems unique to SF. Food was delicious, but we were disappointed in the lack of attentive personnel.
Excellent and creative food-craft; inviting decor, design and layout - however, the actual ambiance and service experience would prevent me from returning. This was a special occasion and I flew in from NYC to SF to surprise my dearest friend for her birthday.
I read the "story" of Firefly online & how the founders "...dreamed of a restaurant where the customers felt like they were at a friend’s house for dinner . . ." I thought - perfect place for two life-long friends to celebrate. For us, it wasn't.
First off - the food really was very good! We shared Crab cake - which was hearty, mostly crab (yay!) and delicious! Secondly we shared a lovely Kale Salad with cranberries and persimmons. Lastly, my friend had the Kabocha Squash (w.hominy, kale chili, maitake mushroom, marinated cabbage topped with a brown rice cake); and I had the Lemongrass pork chop. My pork chop was outstanding! Truly.
For desert we shared the Pumpkin Brioche Bread Pudding, served warm with rum crème anglaise and sprinkled with pumpkin seeds. This was absolutely exceptional! Paired with an excellent cup decaf. coffee - we were in desert heaven.
However, while the food was great - it in no way matched up to the overall ambiance, music or service experience. I will not return. When we arrived the music was some kind of grunge / alt. rock - you know the kind of music you might find in a punk / hip coffee-house, but was really strange in a dining setting. It created a very edgy atmosphere that was hard to relax in - as well, it was a quite loud.
The biggest thing was the strange energy from Service Staff. With the exception of the hostess -
- throughout our entire meal it felt like they were trying to "hurry" us out. The place was busy, but by NO means full. Our Waiter was very efficient (almost clinical), but completely disconnected, no real warmth, and fully dispassionate. In this case, unfortunately, it really came across to both of us and just wasn't enjoyable. A sour note for sure.
I used to really love this neighborhood standout but on a recent visit it seemed the food was just fine (but not memorable) and the restaurant was looking a bit tired. I remember coming here when the restaurant first opened and thinking how lovely and airy it felt with its tent like cloth covered ceilings. Now it just feels poorly lit and dingy. In addition, the tables are quite close together so be prepared to share in your neighbors' conversations. On the plus side, the service was excellent.
