About Firefly Restaurant
We serve food that, more often than not, accesses that part of our deepest soul where genuine expression can flow forth. We have always tried to give our food and service our best selves, as honest and vulnerable as we can muster. We strive to be a place where you might actually have a real connection; maybe with your server, maybe with your food or maybe with your possibly dorky host who is ACTUALLY glad you’re there.
Oh, you wanted a restaurant description? Sorry. Can’t really help you there. We’re not so big on labels. Our food is hard to nail down as we are constantly evolving and entirely seasonal and personal. We’ve used “Food you eat” as a tag line on occasion and that remains accurate. We could also describe it as “Food we really want you to eat”. When you’re here, tell us what you would call it.

Firefly Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Our first visit to this Noe Valley spot, and we liked it a lot. We were a party of three, and there was no wait to be seated with our reservation. My wife and I each had the pasta entree which had a very nice cream sauce with vegetables--excellent! Our cousin had pork belly which she liked. The shrimp potsticker appetizers were fine; and the chocolate cake dessert was yummy--more like a rich chocolate mousse than cake. Fine service, too. Great neighborhood restaurant. A little noisy, but it was a weekend night.
We absolutely enjoyed our experience at Firefly. The food was wonderful and the service attentive. We had specifically asked for a quiet spot for conversation, and they did their best to accommodate our wishes. It is a relatively small restaurant, but the smaller lower room adjacent to the bar does seem quieter for small groups (6-8). Perhaps the biggest negative would be the lack of nearby parking facilities, but since the restaurant is out of the heart of the Noe Valley action, street parking was not difficult to find. We will return for sure and make our friends who dine in the city aware of this little gem.
There were four of us early Saturday evening. Food and service were remarkable, even given that we always have high expectations of Firefly. Two of us split the pot stickers, one had a fine tomato soup and the fourth mixed greens touched (not drowned!) in a fine dressing. The special, meat loaf with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans, was really good, the meat loaf dense but light. The chicken on a bed of red cabbage in a vinegar sauce with little potatoes was great. The best of the evening was the trout with a skin so crispy it was hard to know how the chef had managed that. The noise level was fine except for the periodic shriek from a child diner. Great service. Parking-surprisingly easy! The tab was mid-range & high value.
The services is always great, but the food has been slipping the past few years, to the point where I don't know if I can go back. Overcooked, bland fish and very disappointing and flavorless Vegan dish (the golden beet cake) made my guests say ho-hum. Too bad. Firefly used to beone of my favorite spots
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful dinner here. The excellent service started with the host and progressed to every person we came into contact with. The food was unbelievably wonderful. Hey, I'm not a gusher when it comes to reviews, but Firefly is an exception because it totally deserves it! Although this is a busy spot, we never felt rushed. I am looking foward to returning many times so that I can try more of their dishes.
I can't tell you how many times I've been to Firefly, but it's my favorite restaurant in town hands down (which says a lot). The staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable, the wine list is superb, and the cuisine is always fresh, amazingly delicious, and beautifully prepared. A warm, cozy, romantic atmosphere and quiet location add to its charm. I've never had anything but awesome experiences. The menu changes frequently, but ight now I highly recommend the duck filet and the goat cheese mousse dessert. Brilliant...
Toggling between 3 and 4 stars because we had a very good dinner, but our server was not so much. The food is fresh, flavorful, and well prepared, but be mindful they are not generous in their portions. The issue with our server was both slowness and overly timid - she just didn't seem enthused about the food or the customers, which sort of seems to be key in that role. She also lacked in attentiveness, and told us that a menu item was not available, only for us to see it go to another table that was seated AFTER us. I'm going to assume that she was having a bad day, but I am putting it in the review so that the management notes the training moment. A 5 star needs to nail it across the board.
My husband and I have been spending the month of August in San Francisco, and Firefly is the best meal we've had, bar none. Tuesday''s Fried Chicken was excellent (we are from Georgia), and my crispy skinned trout was to die for - layered flavors that burst with each bite! Erin was a thoughtful and engaging server who snuck me a buttermilk biscuit with honey for dessert. YUM!
The food was not up to how we remembered it from several years ago. The stone fruit salad was wonderful, however, as was the goat cheese mousse. But the side of chard was bland and not cut up for easy eating, the pork was overly salty but otherwise nice.
The service was fine, but the waiter would not make two separate checks for the two couples at one table. That seemed odd, and unnecessary.
Firefly never disappoints. We've been going there for over 15 years and have always had meals that are interesting, high-quality, and perfectly presented. This time we brought relatives from the east coast, who remarked that this was the best meal they had eaten in CA.
An interesting menu with some creative items. Take note of the fixed price offering Sunday through Thursday with any appetizer, entree, and dessert for $37! This cannot be beat! All of the seafood ingredients are sustainable and all of the meats are hormone- and antibiotic-free. This is truly a San Francisco treat. Any negatives? Difficult street parking but be patient till something opens up and then show courtesy to the neighbors who need to enter/leave their garages. Well worth the effort.
No complaints about the food or the service; both were top notch. My one big gripe is that we got a very small table for our group of four, which made for very cramped dining. Plus, we were seated on hard benches that were uncomfortable and hard to get in and out of. Also, the fact that our table was very close to the next one made the noise level seem even greater.
I had remembered this restaurant being seafood-centric, so it was nice to see steak and lambchops on the menu as well. Portions were good; presentation was excellent. I liked the prix fixe pricing (appetizer, entree and dessert for one flat price). I didnt have to worry about running the bill up. I hope to go back to Firefly more often.
Our meal was fantastic but what made the evening memorable, was our waitress. We were visiting SF for a weekend and she hand wrote a map of places we should check out while in town. She was very knowledgable on the menu and steered us in the right direction - not just for our good choice but for a fun night in the city.
Many years ago after it first opened, my partner and I tried to get reservations at Firefly without success (because of it's popularity). We then kind of forgot about it until we moved back to Noe Valley last year and re-discovered it. Wow! What we had been missing all this time! Tucked away in a residential block of 24th Street, you would never guess this place could deliver food with such surprising freshness and sophistication. The menu, which changes frequently, is sort of California with a global/Southeastern US twist. On our most recent visit, I had an amazing Yellowtail on quinoa with avocado and cucumber. Such a perfect, refreshing summer dish. The desserts are some of the best and most original we've had in the city!
I love this place! This is my favorite restaurant in Noe Valley. A great place for a date! The decor is really lovely, and they have amazing fried chicken on Tuesday!
If you go there, you have to get dessert! I have never been disappointed with their dessert menu. Their pastry chef is amazingly talented!
Everything we ordered at Firefly was delicious - although a bit expensive for the portion size. The atmosphere is nicely casual. The service seemed a bit hectic but maybe that's because it's a tight spot - there were no service missteps, it just felt like people running around us all the time. The server made an excellent recommendation for dessert (crepes with corn ice cream!). The only complaint I had is that the restaurant could not put us at a larger table to accommodate my friend's broken leg, but I should have made that request when I placed the reservation. And a full bar would be nice.
I've lost count of how many times we've been to Firefly over the past 18 years or so that they've been open & we clearly love it or we would not keep coming back & bringing everyone we know there. This time had to be the best. There were five (including 3 visitors from NYC who know & enjoy food) of us & we each had 2 or 3 courses. Each course was just superb - interesting, flavorful, just wonderful wonderful unexpected taste combinations. The service was also very very good.
My boyfriend and I went to Firefly to celebrate our mutual birthdays, and it was everything I thought it would be. The atmosphere was beautiful, the employees warm and welcoming, and the food was delicious -- the pot stickers and dessert in particular were mind-blowing. Thank you for a lovely evening!
