About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
  • Gluten-free-friendly
We serve food that, more often than not, accesses that part of our deepest soul where genuine expression can flow forth. We have always tried to give our food and service our best selves, as honest and vulnerable as we can muster. We strive to be a place where you might actually have a real connection; maybe with your server, maybe with your food or maybe with your possibly gracious host who is ACTUALLY glad you’re there.

Oh, you wanted a restaurant description? Sorry. Can’t really help you there. We’re not so big on labels. Our food is hard to nail down as we are constantly evolving and entirely seasonal and personal. We’ve used “Food you eat” as a tag line on occasion and that remains accurate. We could also describe it as “Food we really want you to eat”. When you’re here, tell us what you would call it.

Been making a multi course meal from the starters and small plates last few times---it's a great solution to get to taste a variety of great appetizers. We satisfied four diners with varied preferences! And the staff is my favorite in the city.

WHats the best meal in San Francisco? I don’t know, but I do know that the three courses I have over and over at Firefly comprise the most soul-satisfying, delicious meal I’ve ever had in San Francisco (and I’ve eaten at many many restaurants over my 20 years in SF). And each of these dishes are as humble as it gets: a chopped salad with a delicate anchovy dressing, a plate of two plump, moist pieces of the ur-text of fried chicken accompanied by humble, non-chefy mashed potatoes with gravy, pus a generous piece of cornbread so good that I think about it for days afterward, and a bit of coleslaw that’s not particularly memorable yet I finish every last bit of it. And for dessert, there’s an ‘80s-era brownie sundae that is both nostalgic and shockingly new in the quality of the crisp-toped brownie and ice cream. If you eat at Firefly, make sure to make reservations because even the small bar area fills quickly with walk-ins. And don’t do what I did on my last visit and try something “new” on the very small menu. “Pedestrian” and “not much different from hospital food” were heard at my table about a fried rice ball and a plate of sadly tasteless enchiladas. Finally, you’ll find a tiny ramekin of truly delicious hot sauce with your fried chicken. It’s so good that I asked my server for more. She happily complied plus she told me that they sell bottles of their house-made hot sauce, I left with a bottle and I’ve been doling it out carefully lest I empty the bottle too quickly. Buy yourself a bottle and you’ll know what I mean.

Great neighborhood gem of a place. Food is consistently good, and lots of it is vegetarian.

Firefly has quickly become our go-to spot for hosting visiting friends. Tucked away on a quiet street, it offers that rare mix of being off the beaten path while still delivering well-respected, consistently thoughtful food. The setting is cozy and welcoming and the service is always warm and friendly. Don't miss the sweet potato appetizer; it's a standout. Portions are generous, and the menu strikes a nice balance between comfort and creativity.

The desert which was pricy was the tiniest piece of key lime pie I have ever seen!!! Two of us were going to split it and it was a tablespoon?

Terrific variety of vegetarian options. Very pleasantly surprised that we could hear each other while conversing. One main entree was outstanding - the risotto croquette with zucchini and bean stew. Wow!

Great food. Gluten free for most everything with a staff that knows what they are doing when it comes to celiac.
