Oh, you wanted a restaurant description? Sorry. Can’t really help you there. We’re not so big on labels. Our food is hard to nail down as we are constantly evolving and entirely seasonal and personal. We’ve used “Food you eat” as a tag line on occasion and that remains accurate. We could also describe it as “Food we really want you to eat”. When you’re here, tell us what you would call it.
One of the absolute gems of neighborhood dining in SF.
I love you, Firefly.
Delicious! Almost entirely gluten free menu.
This cozy Noe neighborhood spot is officially a favorite one of mine, after my recent, third trip there - this time for Valentine’s dinner with my husband. Playful artwork, candles, (plus rose petals everywhere this visit) as well as branch sculptures and twinkle lights create a romantic glow that complements the creative menu. The approachable and knowledgeable staff gave highly accurate descriptions of our wine options. Rotating, unique (but small) dishes incorporate lots of rich vegetable and fish options. Written menu has whimsical touches, adding to the casual vibe - but food is complex and beautifully presented.
Valentines dinner....greeted by rose petals in the entrance on the ground, front of house staff all wearing pink shirts, and the magical combination of warm, caring service matched by delicious creative food.
Squash soup, complex flavors paired with orange Greek wine
Seed bread with “yummy” spread
Crab cake, arugula and fennel salad
And, the entire meal was wheat free!
I love this place and try to go whenever I come home to visit my Dad. Food is superb, and waitstaff is wonderful.
We held a business dinner (faculty recruitment for a position in our School of Medicine).
The table though small still held all 6 of us, and the noise level was not too loud, which allowed for thoughtful business discussion.
Food accommodated 3 who are vegetarians in our group.
Firefly is a nice neighborhood restaurant. The food was prepared well, but some of the portions were skimpy, especially for the price. For example, we ordered the crab cake. The crab cake was really really small and it cost $18.00. The servers were not overly friendly nor dismissive. They were rather neutral. Overall, it's a cute restaurant that prepares food fairly well but it is pricy. I would not return because there was absolutely nothing really outstanding or compelling about the experience, food, or wait staff.
Neighborhood gem! Service and food are outstanding. The most gluten-friendly, too.
Wonderful ambience. Delicious lamb and crab cake. Wines are reasonably priced. Service was attentive.
Firefly is always great.
Very good food you can count on
Almost the entire menu was gluten free - as a celiac that meant I had choice. Even the majority of the desserts were gluten free. We had a great birthday celebration. We will definitely go there again.
Rediscovered Firefly after many years. Not sure why we hadn’t been, but happy to be back! We went for belated Christmas dinner celebration. Jay was an outstanding server, affable and attentive. The crab cakes deserve their nearly famous branding - I’m not a Hughs crab fan and I loved them! So fresh. My husband was underwhelmed by the fried chicken but the rest of us really enjoyed our meals. Dessert was a treat for us gluten-free weirdos! We will be back.
Never had a bad meal or bad service there. Been coming for years. Everything is always exquisite. Service is always professional and warm.
Outstanding meal. Cozy setting. Perfect.
This place warms you up as soon as you walk in the door. The staff make you feel like you're a valued guest, but with a familiarity as if you are a friend. The food is consistently delicious, and the wines selection is a great variety of solid choices. I have joined friends here for years as this place makes me feel relaxed and joyful and it's a lovely setting to gather a chat in. Thanks for another wonderful meal Brad and Jennifer, and your whole team.
Great service and great food!
Firefly is consistently excellent-creative cooking, great staff; reasonable prices. A gem.
I had forgotten about this Noe gem until a friend mentioned it last month, and I finally had a chance to dine there this week with an out-of-town guest. She remarked several times about the ambience and friendly service. The food was great! Crab cakes were mostly big pieces of crab, mahi-mahi was cooked perfectly (not too dry), and veggies tasted fresh. A 1/2 bottle of Chablis topped it off. I’ll look for another chance to come back!
I dine out fairly often and Firefly is one of my most favorite places to go, not only for people who are familiar with it, but to introduce people who know and appreciate great food in a friendly setting to a place they are likely to return often.
Perfect birthday dinner from start to finish. Excellent food in just the right portions. Service was flawless and friendly.
This was the best meal we've had in some time. Fantastic.
Cauliflower flatbread, crabcake, seeded bread, brussel sprouts, apple galette -- all were wonderful.
A cozy unpretentious neighborhood spot.
Came to Firefly for a weekend dinner date with the SO. Ordered the Fried Chicken as a main and small bites of sweet potato and brussel sprouts. Was impressed by every single dish and left with a great palate and full stomach.
Highly recommend for lovers of California food fare.
We have been here twice and both times extremely impressed by the food - particularly how healthful and delicious, simultaneously. Even if we weren't health-conscious, we would eat here. Staff is also hospitable, helpful. Our waitress very thoughtfully supplied recommendations for wine and entrees. It's a calm, warm and chic atmosphere all at once. An underground fave : )
A little expensive for what we got but overall was nice.
Jane is always awesome and Emily is new. She gave us royal treatment for my friend’s birthday dinner. Truly stellar, always.
The food was absolutely delicious and very allergy friendly. It was great to be able to eat just about everything on the menu and enjoy my dinner just as much as my husband who has no food allergies. The menu was creative and fresh and the service was very good-- friendly and helpful. The space was cozy and inviting, the perfect date night spot. There was so much on the menu that I wanted to order, so I will definitely be going back!
If the people of San Francisco think that a friend chicken drumstick and a thigh with a scoop of tepid mashed potatoes is good value at $28 before taxes, then this is the place for you.
This is a tough review for me to write, because I love Firefly and have loved it for so many years, but this was not our best experience at the restaurant. The fried chicken dish was underwhelming, only two small pieces of chicken with what looked like your mom's frozen peas and carrots on the side, and a dollop of mashed potatoes with gravy in the middle. The chicken did not taste as good as it used to, and the overall presentation did not match the price point. The short ribs and spaetzle were tasty, but also underwhelming and nothing out of the ordinary relative to the price point. The wine options seem to have gone downhill since the last time we were there, but we enjoyed the carignane and also very much enjoyed our friendly server. I will still give Firefly another chance, but it may be some time before we return. This is bittersweet because we have always adored this neighborhood gem, but feel the food quality and presentation suffered substantially compared to the last time we were there (over a year ago).
We had another wonderful meal at Firefly, our local gem of a restaurant ! Can’t wait to return !
Delicious food and friendly staff. The best, most reliable gluten-free, Celiac-friendly food in the Bay Area.
Great fresh food with enough variety to manage most palates. Great service and friendly neighborhood vibe. Sound management was clearly thought out here and the space allows for great conversation levels, even for larger groups.
They were perfectly accommodating to our group and the food was superb.
This restaurant far exceeded our expectations and we are serious foodies. The ambiance was great, the food fantastic and the waiter (9 years there), she was wonderful. Would go back in a heartbeat. Don't miss the Mhi-mahi....ummm.
Warm atmosphere with delicious food carefully prepared and elegantly presented. Great informative wait staff.
We hadn't visited for several years when we recently went for dinner with an out of town friend.
The meal was very good and the server did a great job of steering us to some very good drinks. We really enjoyed the feeling of being in a lovely neighborhood restaurant that didn't try to be too overly trendy.
This was our first time at Firefly since moving to the neighborhood about 6 months ago. Everyone and everything was perfect. The owner/host was so sweet and gracious. Our waitress Molly was so sweet, helpful, and cheerful. The food was yummy!!!!
I needed a small, intimate restaurant with amazing food and service for a last minute dinner I was arranging. I had an old college friend visiting from the UK, and wanted to introduce her to some of my close friends in SF. Since it was last minute I wasn’t sure if there would be 3 or 5 in our party. They were very accommodating, communicative and flexible - which I appreciated.
When we arrived food, ambience and service was great, I really couldn’t have asked for more!
Great food, ambience and service. And you can talk with your table mate.
