finn & porter, which is located in the downtown area of Austin, TX, provides quality food for patrons and has been doing so for more than 12 years. During this time, the restaurant has worked hard to utilize fresh and local ingredients, which have helped to make the items on the menu real standouts to patrons.
finn & porter is an upscale restaurant that offers steaks, seafood and sushi prepared by Chef Peter Maffei. The restaurant works hard to choose the best options for items in season. In addition, finn & porter offers quality cocktails that include fine liquor and spirits. The restaurant also has a range of wines available.
If you ARE looking for boring hotel food, you found it. Old style, uninspiring and a restaurant that needs more than a face lift. What a mistake
In Austin, good food is not hard to find, especially during SxSW. Food trucks, bars, and restaurants abound and everyone has a favorite.
We passed Finn & Porter as we were loading in for the trade show, and pegged it as our "close of show" celebratory location. Assuming we would be fighting hordes of foodies and attendees for space, I made an early reservation for the restaurant.
Upon entering, we were warmly greeted and seated. The early reservation meant the room was largely empty when we sat down, but as the dining area filled over the evening it was obvious the great attention we were paid was not unique; everyone was greeted, seated, provided some complimentary champagne, and told about the specials. Service remained top-tier throughout the evening.
As a celiac diner, it is always hard to find a good restaurant that will even pay attention to my dietary needs; Finn & Porter not only explained what I could and could not have, but our server made multiple trips to verify various foods. We settled on a selection of appetizers and entrees that left us satisfied and sated.
The food was amazing. Each piece of seafood, each cut of sashimi, the lamb appetizer... all of it was wonderful. The fish was fresh and flavorful, and if you have not had a chance to eat their octopus appetizer you must do so, even if you ordinarily avoid tentacles.
The service was attentive, courteous, and just that right mix of there-but-not-oppressive; glasses were refilled as needed, plates were cleared when finished, but overall we felt left to enjoy our dining experience in peace.
Dessert was a pleasant surprise, not being left to sorbet or crème brûlée. I had a wonderful mousse plate with flamed marshmallow that was decadent and wonderful.
Price is much what you would expect from a restaurant of their quality, and I did not think twice at all for what we paid.
Service was fantastic, drinks were good, and so was the food.
It is very difficult to find Beef Wellington in the Austin area, and Chef Peter Maffei of Finn & Porter incorporated it into his Valentine's Day Prix Fixe 4-course menu. Every course was excellently prepared and very pleasing to the eye. The flavors were unique and well balanced on every plate. We have never had a bad meal at Finn & Porter.
From the moment we announced our arrival, the Finn and Porter team set the stage for a quiet evening of casual-yet- elegant dining. From the birthday champagne to salads (beet salad and caesar salad) to our main courses (sea bass and Finn & Porter - tenderloin & poached lobster) and a shared dessert (a glazed banana, peanut butter, and chocolate treat), each item was both a presentation delight and an uncommonly delicious taste and texture experience. To top it off, their de-caf coffee (French Press) was on par with everything else. An excellent experience ...
I chose the restaurant because it was inside the Hilton Austin where my guests were staying for a conference. It was beautifully decorated, quiet, and the food was plated exquisitely. Unfortunately, that was completely undermined by the poor service and attention to food delivery. Several times we question whether our table had been forgotten by our server - it took 15 minutes to be greeted and asked for a drink order. The food looked lovely, but the mashed potatoes and broccoli under my roasted chicken were cold. Overall, I would not go back.
If dining here on a regular night, I highly recommend this restaurant for its raw fish dishes as well as steak. We ate here on NYE with a slightly limited menu, but it was still satisfactory. Great cocktails!
We went here for Thanksgiving dinner which was a fixed traditional thanksgiving dinner menu. While weren't expecting anything amazing, it was very disappointing to get cold (and I mean room temperature at best) bland food for 45 bucks a plate. My wife's dinner came out with no stuffing on the plate. Dessert was something I would have expected from going to a national chain. Service by the various individuals that waited on was OK, but I would have expected to have one waiter/waitress serving our table of five, not three different random people, given that they were not very busy. Overall we were very disappointed.
This review is only regarding the Thanksgiving meal. It was the first time we had been to this restaurant as our old favorite had closed. For the price, we felt the food was just okay. Bland, actually. The soup and salad starters were exceptional. But the main turkey meal was just not up to par for a nice restaurant. The service was good except for having to go ask for a spoon once the soup arrived. It may be great for non-holiday meals.
You'd think that with a limited menu, a renown restaurant would knock it out of the park. Sadly, not the case here. For $45 pp, we were served cold and dry pecan-pumpkin pie, soggy and flavorless green bean casserole and undercooked yams. The starter soup was good but a little salty. The best part was the mashed potatoes which were whipped and pipped for a pretty presentation but could have used a side of gravy. The turkey was moist at least, but it would've been nice to be given the choice of dark or white meat.
We ordered sushi & were delighted with all of our items. Also, excellent wine choices. Wait staff very nice & attentive. Thank you for a lovely dining experience.
Food was pretty good but no atmosphere (unless kids running around counts) and quite expensive. Won't be back in a hurry as there's lots of better options around.
Everything about this place was amazing! The food was delicious and the service was amazing. Not one bad thing to say about this place.
Really nice place great food would definitely recommend it
The food was amazing! The wine was delicious! Pearl was an amazing server! It was an excellent experience. Food was NOT over priced!
Surprisingly, this restaurant turned out to be in a Hilton hotel, a fact which was not mentioned on TripAdvisor - at least not that I noticed. Do not let this deter you! The name, also, is a bit deceptive as the restaurant is decidedly Asian in decor and cuisine. In other words, just what we were looking for. The woman who waited on us was wonderful. I had questions about a number of things and she described the different sake choices and the sushi perfectly. The sake I ordered based on her recommendation was amazing. All of the sushi was fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. My dining companions ordered the Lamb Duo and the Pork Chop which also looked lovely on the plates and (I'm told) tasted equally fabulous. I've forgotten the name of my chocolate dessert but it was dark and decadent. There was a peanut butter chocolate mousse dessert with ... bananas? that also looked yummy. Nice wine list and incredibly attentive service and presentation, from placement on the table to arrangement on the plate. I had the feeling if anything had been out of place it would have gone right back to the kitchen with profuse apologies, but no need - everything was perfect.
Try to make the sushi happy hour. Makes for a very cost effective evening with fantastic food
The food was great, and I love that this place takes reservations. We enjoyed the ambiance as well as the great happy hour deals. The scallops were divine!
The sushi is phenomenal. Pair that with the 1/2 price sushi happy hour price and the 1/2 price wine on Fridays and the value of this excellent food went through the roof!
Pearl was an exceptional server! Knew the memu, was attentive and friendly. Sushi was good, but the appetizers we're the star!
We dined there for our 10 yrs anniversary, we were greeted with a glass of Champaign upon arrival. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. Food was excellent and atmosphere was wonderful, quite and romantic. We could have asked for more. We would highly recommend Finn & Porter in the Hilton in Downtown Austin.
My wide and I had dinner recently at Finn & Porter, in Austin , TX. The food was excellent and the value even better! I had a fixed price menu offering that included Beet Gazpacho soup that was an extraordinary taste experience, an 8 ounce serving of Texas Wagyu Ribeye served medium rare, a wonderfully rich and ample portion, finished off with a superb dessert. All of this for only $38! My wife had a great meal also, featuring prominently the largest pork chop we have ever seen, for a similar price. The service was cordial and the experience leisurely. I would highly recommend this restaurant, conveniently located in the Hilton Austin.
It's a seafood and sushi restaurant first, but the best thing we had was a pork belly appetizer that was really delicious. The special rolls were also very good--I think one was called a dragon roll and I don't recall the other, but they were both very well done.
The food was passable but in this city, it's not worth eating somewhere that the food is t spectacular. The menu was alright, but the food tasted like poorly done, mass created generic dishes. It's great if you don't care to find somewhere better.
To be greeted with a smile and glass of champagne. .need I say more?
The white bean crostini was very good and I loved the grilled zucchini with Brussels.
Staff were very attentive and friendly.
For a wind down business dinner, this is a great choice. Would be quite a bit pricier if you add in the valet parking if you are not staying at the hotel.
I had read it was the best place for seafood in Austin. Now I'm pretty sure it must have been an advertisement. A shrimp tempura roll was decent, but the tuna sushi appeared "off". For my main course the stake was ok, but the lobster was rubbery and tasteless. Everyone in my family felt that it was a wasted opportunity for a good dinner, which is what we wanted. With so many good options for seafood and steak in Austin, F&P was a major let down.
The service was very poor. The our male server Joshua seemed stressed, curt and mildy rude in manner, and never cleared a single dish or glass from our table until we stacked them up and put them in front of him. We were a party of 5 and it got very crowded at the table with dishes and glasses. Quite unpleasant for a restaurant charging these prices. Some of the food was good- not great by any means, my dish was a steamed type sea bass ( waiter stated cooked in a vacuum) that was supposed to come with bok choy and mushrooms, instead it came with little papery particles of what probably was bok choy, and about 3 pea sized mushrooms all ( fish and "veggies")- all floating in a clear mushroom broth. It did NOT look appetizing. It tasted fairly good but really, not a nice looking dish at all. I wonder if they ran out of bok choy and mushrooms and put this thing together. My meal was very disappointing overall. I won't be going back.
What can I say? Love this place. Food is always amazing, service is top notch and the cocktails are great. Not at ALL your typical restaurant connected to a hotel.
Not memorable at all. Food was just ok, and definitely not worth the price. Our service was good though.
We went for happy hour. We ordered a variety of foods and wine. Everything was fabulous. We have never had such fresh sushi. The Texas Manhattan in the bar was outstanding. Our waitress provided excellent service. We will definitely be back.
We had a very nice business dinner for 3 at Finn & Porter. Excellent wine list with added bonus of 50% off bottles on Friday night! Steak was well prepared and service was very good.
Wonderful restaurant, great service, great food. Beatiful establishment, i cannot wait to come back
The food was excellent and was complimented by the excellent service.
Went for Thanksgiving lunch. The only thing available was the turkey dinner with all the trimmings. We had our two boys(3 & 6) with us so we asked to be seated in the loft bar. We wanted to see football.
The food was good. Turkey was moist, both white and dark included on the plate. Sides were greenness casserole, sweet potatoes, dressing mash potatoes and gravy (no cranberries?). The bartender recommended a nice Pinot Noir than paired nicely. Dessert was either bourbon pumpkin pecan pie or a Nutella bread pudding, both were a nice sweet finish.
All in all, we enjoyed our meal and would return again next year.
Went for Thanksgiving Dinner and the Turkey was the best I have ever had in a restaurant. Service was excellent and it was very quiet. I would certainly recommend this for special occasions or fine dining if you are in town.
Although Finn & Porter is extremely convenient to executive travelers, there are simply much better restaurants in Austin for the price range. For example the restaurant is physically located in a large open space directly beneath the bar on the sound end of the hotel. This means that you are forced to hear loud drunken banter from the bar, as well as watch the smokers congregate outside the restaurant window between the hotel and the convention center.
The food was good, but far from outstanding. The scallops were mushy at the center and lacked flavor, not representative of the $8 per individual scallop pricing. The filet was better, but again, not anything that stood out as exceptional. In all, the dinner for 2 came to approximately $300, which would have been a much more enjoyably spent at Ruth Chris, Fleming, or Trulucks (all within a mile of Finn & Porter).
Outstanding service and our meals were grand! Our server was very attentive and made the evening a pleasant experience.
a bit chili, but the food was very good. Sushi options and we tried the bass, which was great. Good expirience
Everything we had was skillfully crafted and very enjoyable.
If your looking for the streets of Austin experience be aware this restrauant is located in the hotel...
