Fin Seafood Restaurant
As I expect, this visit was excellent. I have lunches at the Fin and they were very good. This time, I had dinner and it was as I expected, excellent. The service is outstanding. The food prepared with care and in reasonable portions. It was QUALITY not quantity, as a fine restaurant should be.
We came in Friday night and enjoyed the restaurant week menu. The food was amazing. Was a little disappointed in dessert but otherwise everything else was fantastic, especially that white cosmo!! Was also a little disappointed in our server. It felt as though she got stuck with us as another male server was taking care of all our surrounding tables. We kinda wished we had him because he was interactive with his guests, friendly, and attentive. Our server was nice, but she didn’t come around too often and we had to wait a bit between courses. I am a server so I kept trying to give her the benefit of the doubt because I understand when we get busy, or just having an off night and it can be difficult. I even wondered if our mentioning that we were there for restaurant week gave her the impression we were cheap and then didn’t expect much from us so she chose to give us the bare minimum of service.
There was a table next to us that came after we did and their server was at the table long before we were greeted and they ended up being finished before us because their server was more on top of what they needed and moving them along. My other assumption was maybe she had already been cut for the night and was trying to get her side work done, but I still feel like we deserved to still have the same quality of service as the other tables were getting.
Overall though we had a great time and would definitely come back. Thank you!
Our servers name escapes me but certainly not her quality of attentiveness. The last time I was at this location, the site was Cowboy Sids. Needless to say it’s been years dining on that side of the water, as we live in Portsmouth. Well worth the easy drive and NO TOLL. The meal was beautifully prepared and served. All of our expectations of a fabulous meal were met. The fixed price fare was perfect with the choices advertised. It was new for all of us and it certainly won’t be our last experience at Fin.
Good parking, great food and presentation, sophisticated wine list, service feels customized to you, busy place reservations suggested. Not good for large parties due to space.
Food and service were excellent.
The absolute best restaurant in Hampton Roads...that includes Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Suffolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Yorktown, Williamsburg, and all the nearby small towns. If you haven't eaten there, your mistake. Can't recommend it enough. Been there more than 20 times, nearly eaten my way through the menu, and everything, and I mean everything is outstanding.
One of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The food is outstanding. The wine and drink list are plentiful and were not overly priced. The executive chef has put a menu together that I second to none.
We were just visiting Newport News for business. A colleague recommended Fin Seafood. We were not disappointed, Great atmosphere and great food. If you have time, ask Robert at the bar to make you an Old Fashion.
Took a work colleague new to the area for lunch and it happened to be Restaurant Week. Asked for bread for the table and the server replied there is no bread service during Restaurant Week. Waited more than 30 minutes for our first course (she-crab soup and caesar salad). Once we decided to sample the Restaurant Week menu, the service level dropped. Have been here numerous times and never had a complaint. If the goal of Restaurant Week is to entice new diners to try out a new restaurant and come back later, then Fin Seafood Restaurant failed in regards to my colleague. With respect to a diner who has been numerous times, I will think twice before returning with a work colleague.
Great staff. Good food as well. Dessert ( flourless chocolate cake) wasn’t very good. Dry. Otherwise nice staff and good food.
We had pretty disappointing service today. I try to take into account that it is restaurant week and we had a large party (10 people), however the attitude of our server was not typical of the excellent service Fin is known for and that we have always experienced. My group ordered off the restaurant week lunch menu and the food was very good. However, we were seated in the back room and our server was the only one working it. We were all on our lunch break and our lunch took 2 hours, more than 40 minutes of which was waiting for our checks and desserts. Our reservation was for 11:45 and we didn’t leave the restaurant until 1:50. When, about 30 minutes after the initial request, we reminded the server we were still waiting for our checks and let him know we needed to get back to work, his response was flippant and rude. We then waited another 10 minutes for him to bring the checks. He was great at keeping our drinks filled, but it was definitely an inconvenience to wait so long to pay our bill. He was obviously overwhelmed, but one would think that during restaurant week there would be enough coverage to accommodate the patrons.
We went to Fin to celebrate our anniversary and this was also our first time going there as well. We were more than pleasantly surprised! What a fantastic restaurant!! It was very busy since it was apparently "restaurant week" in Newport News as well and we were very happy with the special menu created for restaurant week. The host was very welcoming and thanks to Open Table, he knew it was our anniversary without us saying anything. He then spread beautiful rose petals across our table! Then our excellent waiter (believe his name was "Tony") brought us some complimentary and very nice tasting champagne while we looked at their impressive cocktails, wine and other drinks menu. We chose a bottle of wine that was no longer available, but Tony suggested another wine was that absolutely perfect and then proceeded to chill it for us as fast as he could. Next we ordered off the special 3-course menu for restaurant week and were very happy with all 3 courses. I was taken aback a bit when the seafood paella I ordered arrived as it had a very tasty brothy/soupy liquid surrounding the paella which is unusual for the way paella is normally served. It was still very good though!! The desserts we selected were equally fantastic as well! We'll be back for sure and most likely will become regulars there. Wish we hadn't waited so long to try this gem of a restaurant!!
Restaurant week menu is fantastic. Worth every penny. Seafood paella was flavorful; seafood cooked to perfection. Friends had the filet; loved every bite; local catch (tuna) was enjoyed by all; the scallops were sweet, and cooked to perfection. Servers were attentive and friendly.
Always a favorite. Couldn't miss it during restaurant week!
Excellent, as always!!! Usually order the 5-course menu with reserve wine. Absolutely delicious and presented beautifully. Megan and Tommy are wonderfully delightful servers with thorough knowledge of everything they bring to you. Highly recommend to everyone.
Newport News Restaurant Week - how those words bring joy to my budget! We started with the crab dip; even with four hefty eaters there was more than a sufficient amount for an appetizer. It was delicious! We all then opted for the $15.00 lunch menu which started with salads or their beyond scrumptious crab bisque. Thick, rich, creamy, with lots of jumbo lump crab floating around. Two of us had the Oyster Paella with delicate fried oysters on top of gently mixed vegetables; one diner had salmon which he said was wonderful; the fourth diner had the lobster roll. Having spent time in New England, she was hesitant because many restaurants serve previously frozen stringy lobster. She was delighted with the fresh lobster on the typical lobster bun with just the perfect amount of herbs and mayo.
The $15.00 lunch special had many options for both appetizer and dessert, all served with their fresh bread and premium olive oil. Fin really has the best bargain in town during Restaurant Week. When it isn't Restaurant Week, it is a little pricier but oh so worth the money for the absolute best crab cake ever.
Dinner was great. Chef's menu is delicious and always paired perfectly.
Fabulous dinner- well cooked, well prepared and presented.
The menu contained a wide variety of fish, seafood, beef, lamb, and salads. I treated my wife and in-laws; we all had different entrees and appetizers and all were perfectly cooked, delivered simultaneously, and hot off the stovetop. We'll be back- Fin lived up to its reputation.
The food was different and in general good but octopus was salty and martinis were overpriced for the quality. Smoked salmon was great.
Everything was delicious. Love their signature corn crab soup. Would highly recommend Fin!
Excellent service, delicious food.
A truly excellent meal. The scallops were tremendous and the crab cake was exquisite.
The food at Fin is consistently excellent - always properly prepared and menus are well planned. Service is spot on and you are always made to feel like you are a valued patron.
Good food, waitress was awesome. Insanely over priced- for the price of the food- quality should have been better. $80 for a piece of wagyu ribeye - should melt in your mouth. Was worth $40 AT MOST. Vegetables too salty. Again- decent but way overpriced.
Fin’s seafood restaurant is our first choice for a great dining experience in the Newport News area. The food is delicious.
We returned to Fin as we enjoyed it very much the first time. This time, also, the food was very good. However, we had a terrible experience which I need to share. After enjoying a cocktail, my husband and I were going to order a glass of wine. The waiter said he had recommendations for us, and brought us each a sample to try. We then each ordered a glass of what we had sampled. When we got the bill, my husband’s glass ( yes, glass) of wine was $22. Surely, we should have been told how expensive it was before ordering. We were scammed. Coming from the NYC area, even there we never spent $22 for a glass of wine.
We, unfortunately, will not return to Fin. If you go, beware of waiter wine recommendations. SHAMEFUL!
The she crab soap was great with ample crab meat. However, the main meal of flounder was mediocre at best. We're used to surf rider flounder (the real thing). The Fin flounder was a wee portion breaded and fried and appeared to be frozen, not fresh. A bad experience for our first visit to the Fin. Probably won't be back. Sorry. The Sayres
Our server, Charity was incredible . Very professional , efficient , and knowledgeable . The wines she recommended and let us taste were amazing . My mother in laws she crab soup and salad did not disappoint, as well as the in house bread . She loved them . My beet salad was a bit heavy feeling , almost like a dessert - too much goat cheese and the cashew butter glaze didn’t pair well. My entree was over cooked , not especially flavorful and the side vegetables were bathed in butter and salt . I keep trying Fin because I want to like it , but so far am still looking for a casual/ fine dining restaurant with a scratch kitchen in NN that would be my “ go -to”.
This place never ever disappoints. All of the food is amazing. Absolutely my favorite restaurant. The quality of the food is great and the presentation dwarfs any other fine dining restaurant I have gone to.
Worthy of 56th anniversary!! We were shown to our table which had beautiful fresh red rose petals sprinkled on it! With our permission, the server brought us each a glass of champagne from the chef.
My mind was made up before I went that I was going to have three hors-devours for my supper: the crab bisque, the oyster trio, and the bang bang shrimp. This was not my first outing to Fins.
A new menu appetizer was lobster bisque with a crème fraiche tarragon lacing on top. Who could turn that down? It was delicious. Then I saw the flounder topped with jumbo lump crab; to be honest I could not describe the rest of the dish except for the teardrop yellow peppers which were whole peppers no longer than one half inch and quite crunchy. There was broccolini, spinach, maybe carrots but whatever, the combination was beyond delicious.
My husband started with a bowel of their crab bisque. If I were on death row and had to chose a last meal, that crab bisque would be on the menu. Then he had fresh yellowfin tuna on a bed of mashed sweet potatoes. I saw chopped pecans sprinkled on his plate. The other ingredients are not up for this recall but he cleared his plate with a most happy look on his face.
The desserts all sounded wonderful, but we settled for just coffee.
Our daughter comes to town next week-end. Fins is definitely on our menu.
By far and away, Fin is the best restaurant that we’ve eaten at in years. The service was attentive but not intrusive, and the food was absolutely perfect. I highly recommend the octopus and the bison.
The service and food was on par as usual. However, We were seated in the special events room with 2 large parties that were loud and with children. Not sure what we did to deserve that table and not one in the dining room.
Meal and service excellent !
Not a place for quiet dining
What a great dining experience. Our waiter was fantastic and the food was incredible
Fin always has excellent service and excellent food. If you like soup, try the corn crab. It is unique, not heavy, and delicious. It is appreciated that Fin takes the effort to have creative vegetable side dishes.
Great experience in a setting we wanted to investigate for very different reasons.
It’s in what might be called a very upscale planned community with high density living and the market surroundings for such retirement living is outstanding.
Wonderful atmosphere but a tad loud when full but that wasn’t a distraction., just an observation.
Classy and chic
Fin is an excellent seafood restaurant with excellent bourbon and wine lists. They also have a good beer
list. The service was excellent and friendly without being obsequious. It is not children friendly. This is
one of my favorite restaurants.
So lovely!! Ambiance and service was delightful. Creme brulee was phenomenal. Soup and fish were a little salty but that’s just me - could maybe ask for less salt next time as I definitely plan to go bac.
Great ambiance, superb service and delightful dining experience. Cocktails, wine, firecracker shrimp appetizer, she crab soup, beet salad, smoked salmon, beef tenderloin, wild yellowfin salmon....all perfectly prepared, excellent presentation and delicious. Our special restaurant for all occasions!
