Delicious food, the dessert and complimentary after dinner Amaretto was to die for.
I have been coming to Filomena for special occasions for years, and I am dazzled every single time. This was at least the third birthday I have celebrated here since I first moved to the area in 2010. Everything was, as it always is, just phenomenal. I get the Gnocchi della Mamma each and every visit - I highly recommend it. The ossobuco is extraordinary as well. Order multiple plates so you can try a bunch of things, but keep in mind you will absolutely be taking home copious amounts of leftovers (yay!) - the portions are notoriously generous. Fantastic service, excellent ambiance, best Italian food in DC. I am already looking forward to my next visit.
I went to Filomena for dinner with family visiting from out of town. We chose Filomena on the recommendation of my wife, who had eaten lunch there once previously with a friend. The ambience is immediatley cozy: the space is tucked into a basement with tight corners and little room to maneuver, the lighting is very low with candles on every table, and the table-settings remind one of homestyle dinners at a grandparent's house. The food is excellent and consists of authentic, flavorful Italian dishes with primarily tomato-based sauces. In fact, we immediately noticed on entering the restaurant, a transparent room to the right of the entrance in which a chef was cutting and shaping pasta dough by hand, so we were easily assured that the food in Filomena is freshly made. Additionally, any dish can be sauced with alfredo or pesto, as we found out when my wife requested alfredo for her raviolis instead of tomato sauce. The service meanwhile was also excellent. A polite and well-mannered server regularly checked on our table, and even suggested a popular dish for my pre-teen niece (since there is no children's menu). We finished our meal with several orders of dessert shared among my family, specifically a cookies-and-cream slice of cake and a delicious slice of strawberry-cheesecake that were both exceptional. The only caveat for any prospective diner at Filomena is to a) reserve a table early and b) come hungry. There was no mention in the restaurant's description on "Open Table" or even by the server that every plate is very large, perhaps even homestyle-sized. Hence, my wife and I ended up with left-over pasta for days after my family boxed large portions of their meal and departed DC the following morning!
Classic family run Italian restaurant in Georgetown with great ambiance. The food was outstanding. Huge portions...proceed with caution.
Decor is over-the-top old school stereotypical 60s Italian style. Overwhelmed by Easter bunnies, Easter eggs and other froufrou—tacky looking. Cheesecakes on steroids in the dessert case. Reseated at a second table described as “bigger for you” which wasn’t. Main courses arrived before I’d finished half my drink, and mine was wrong. While I waited for my correct dinner to arrive, my husband finished his entire meal, which he described as “okay.” I got fed up and left without dinner. His main course ($33 for sausage and cannelloni), a beer ($5.25 for Bud Lite), my martini ($15–and no price on the menu), and glass of wine ($11) came to $70, and one of us didn’t eat dinner. Looked and felt like a tourist trap. Wouldn’t recommend or return.
Awesome food, service and the Oreo dessert was incredible
Always an impeccable experience
Was over priced for the quality of the food. And the menu was not very creative.
If you really want authentic Italian classic food in a very fun environment this place is for you. This was my second trip and I took a few folks who had never been. They are still raving about the food. It’s worth every penny. Always crowded just be prepared to have fun and eat hardy. From appetizers to desserts amazing. And I’m pretty fussy about pasta. Don’t like it over cooked. How they manage the perfect al dente with that many people is beyond my imagination. Old school and just simply good.
I love this restaurant for traditional Italian food. The pastas are always amazing. The gnocchi with bolognese sauce is definitely a great choice. But really, you can't go wrong. I love that they give you a choice of sambuca or amaretto to close the meal. I go for lunch or dinner.. I never plan on eating the whole dish... the amount of food means leftovers are guaranteed. It's crowded and loud. But great!
Booked Filomena for birthday dinner thru Opentable, made a special note during the reservation. The staff congratulated other customers but forgot about me. Pity. Dissatisfied very much. Food was good, table was in a good location, any complaints - but if Opentable has a “special occasion” field - the Restaurant have to pay attention.
It was a very nice and cozy ambiance. The food was great and service was really good. A bit pricey but overall excellent place.
A superb restaurant in every way. There were large parties celebrating birthdays yet our small party of three found it intimate and quiet in our corner. I will return and I recommend it highly.
Started with a cocktail at the bar. When we were seated the waiter gave great suggestions regarding portions and top dishes. Everything was delicious. I’m not a dessert person, but we grabbed some to go. It was definitely worth it! Best dessert around.
Absolutely phenomenal! Our first time there and we will definitely be back. Food was amazing. Dessert was heavenly. Service was on point. Make sure to make a reservation, otherwise the wait will be for hours. Highly recommend!
This is my favorite restaurant in Washington DC. The food is authentic Italian. It is no wonder many celebrities and President Clinton eat here. Their tiramisu is so good (you can taste the rum but it is not over powering). They make all pasta in house. I am a customer for life.
Always the best! Love it. I have been for the last four years with a foodie that's been for 30 years. Excellent choice for pasta and great atmosphere.
I have frequented this restaurant numerous times over the past few years. The food is always outstanding, the service is professional & amiable and the ambiance is perfect for celebrations. It is a "must dine" venue in Georgetown.
The food was exquisite, but the service was indifferent. (Others have mentioned cold bread; ours was, too). The server checked on us one time.
The dining room was much too dark. It was hard to SEE the food, let alone read the menu. The Easter decorations were distracting.
I love this place! Unfortunately, our waiter dropped the ball a few times.
Filomena is always a good idea. Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. We got the shrimp as an appetizer, it did not disappoint! It was delicious. Remember to get the sambuca at the end 😏
The food and service were excellent. I highly recommend the homemade pasta. Simply wonderful.
One of the most authentically hospitable restaurants I've experienced. This will be a date night you won't forget. You'll be treated like family when you enter, and you will want to return soon. Be sure to make reservations, as tables are in high demand.
Amazing as always. I would visit the DC area just to eat here!!!!! I am in town at least twice a year and this place is ALWAYS on my itinerary. They never disappoint and always exceed my expectations.
Excellent as always. A must stop place in DC!
The food was absolutely amazing. It’s a little dark in there but it’s OK. Also the tables are really close together. But again the food is everything.
Wonderful The ravioli and meatballs were delicious! Went back a second time in one week and ordered the same dish! Tried the sausage, and it was excellent. The strawberry cheese cake is not to be missed. Wonderful wine list; excellent California selection. Adorable Easter decorations. A little tight and noisy, but iconic! Don't miss it!
Germano was a fabulous host as was Dino. My out of town dear girlfriend felt so pampered. Thank you for a wonderful evening! Food was well recommended by Dino and Germano and it was great. I had salmon and my friend had some type of white fish that she said was the best she’s eaten!
Todo muy bien
First, EXCELLENT food!!! The food is delicious and made from scratch. Don’t miss the pasta mammas that make the pasta in the window on the street. I would say leave room for dessert but the food is so delicious you won’t be able to. The dessert is fabulous so take some home!! The decor is a crazy eclectic scheme that is not describable. It’s a MUST DO if you’re in DC.
The food & service was outstanding!
When your clients rave for day's afterwards about their dinning experience, the quality of the food, service they received while dinning, and the fact that it likely usurped other restaurants as their new favorite for when the come into town, you KNOW this is a can't miss establishment!
Thanks to Filomena's Ristorante for making my clients happy and myself a ROCKSTAR for simply knowing where to go in DC!
Great place! Amazing food, ambiance and service. Out of town friends ask to go back.
Best dish we ordered was the squid ink pasta and shrimp. Felt we were pushed into the veal chop which was served cold and not crunchy.
Do yourself a huge favor and go. Try the eggplant parmesan, any pasta dish. Wonderful service, food, ambience. This place has it down right. We will be returning as soon as we can!
Since being back from Italy, I’ve been hunting for real and delicious Italian food and this is it!! Must have when visiting DC! I will come back to DC just to eat here again! It has a very quirky atmosphere decorated all up for holidays and you can watch the woman make the pasta through the window! Such a neat place! 10/10 definitely recommend!
One if the BEST meals of our lives! Husband had the Osso Bucca, and it fell off the bone with just a thought. The risotto was creamy and delicious. I had the seafood and cheese ravioli in a lobster sauce it was beyond words! I highly recommend it!
The best Italian meal I've ever had! The food was fresh and authentic and delicious.
Food was delicious and huge portions. I highly recommend the Lobster Cardinale.
