We have enjoyed Filinis for several years, and this was our first time in 2017. The menu seemed less interesting with fewer choices + higher prices. The dining room was empty and quiet on a Tuesday night, though the bar downstairs was quite loud. The service was good, the food was good, the decor is still a bit cold.
Overall quality of the food for brunch has gone down hill over the last few years. It had been some time since I visited Filini, but I decided to go back since I live within a block of the restaurant. Was very disappointed by the service and less than impressed by the food that came out to our table. I had enjoyed the omelet during previous visits and decided to order it again, but asked that there they not include green peppers due to an allergy at the table. The menu states that the omelet is served with bell peppers, but doesn't clarify the color, so I just wanted to be sure no green peppers were served and said any other color would be fine. My omelet arrived with only green peppers and of course I had to send it back. Once the new omelet arrived with red peppers, I realized the food was no longer of the quality in recent years. Adding to this error, I was charged for "adding items" to my omelet since I requested any peppers that weren't green peppers, even though the menu only clarifies bell peppers. The service was embarrassing and as convenient as it is to drop by Filini for breakfast/brunch/dinner, I won't be returning. There are plenty of restaurants in Chicago worth the longer walk.
This was a very disappointing visit. We will not return. The restaurant was empty except for one other small party, so air conditioning was not adjusted to accommodate the paucity of body heat. Portions were very small. I ordered the salmon ($34). The portion was fairly reasonably sized, but it was raw in the middle and did not come with a sliver of lemon, even though there was no sauce of other flavoring to the fish. The plate was garnished with a few roe eggs and maybe 2 stalks of slivered asparagus. Not at all worth the price. It was cold when brought to the table. My friend (we were supposed to be celebrating her birthday), ordered what we thought was a pasta dish (cavatappi), but this was definitely not little squiggles of pasta. Instead there were hard green nuggets. That also was cold when brought to the table. I asked for green tea and was brought Earl Grey, already brewed. The waiter was aware that we were unhappy, but none of the problems were his fault and there really was not much he could do about the situation. We were on a tight, but reasonable schedule, so there was not time to wait for re-heating the salmon, re-cook the very hard pasta nuggets, or change the tea. We debated about dessert, but decided to buy one because it was, after all, a birthday. We each ordered a semi-freddo. It was the only good part of the dinner. Ordering 1 pasta dish, one secondi, 2 desserts and tea came to $85. Insanely expensive for the small, poorly prepared portions. We will not return.
Way over priced. Snobby server like we're in a gold star restaurant. I think they buy their meatballs at the store around the corner and then re sell them at a cost 4 times what they cost at Mariano's grocery. Very disappointed to have tiny portions of spaghetti and a 200.00 dinner bill for 2 adults and 2 small children. Find your dinner elsewhere. Will never spend a penny of our money there again.
I've written this before - there is a "Sour milk" odor that is constant in this place. There were 2 other tables in the entire place being served. The seating at the bar and high tops are horrible to sit in... Frankly, I'm not sure how the place is still open. I only went there because a client recommended we meet there and it was only then that I realized where I was going. The name is permanently branded in my mind - NEVER again!
New chef is doing a great job. Sampled a few things and enjoyed all. I can always get a table here, I think because of the location it's perhaps not the first place everyone thinks of when they're contemplating options on Michigan Ave. Worth going a block east, however. Great atmosphere. I always ask for a table in Youssef's section, he's wonderful.
I had been to this restaurant once before and really enjoyed it, but this experience was completely different. The room is so beautiful and cool, and based on my last experience I couldnt understand why people weren't flocking there. Unfortunately I got my answer. Our server was terrible. Did not discuss the menu with us. Brought out our cheese and meat plate without explaining what was what. Brought our salads with our entrees. The pasta was overcooked and flavorless-a crime at an Italian restaurant charging these prices. Never again.
This restaurant has been in our backyard Lake Shore East for 6 years and we never tried it. We were in the mood for light Italian food and was almost below zero out so we went over. Much to our surprise it was wonderful. The atmosphere was cozy sitting in a great booth with a view . We look forward to going again
Menu was very limited and expensive for what was served. I first ordered the house salad and leaves weren't so fresh. I then ordered the scallops. Dish came with just three scallops and brocolini. After couple of bites I realized scallops tasted odd, sour, and I returned it. Because it was late and I didn't want to look for another place, I ended up ordering lamb. They served me a small piece of lamb chop with mashed potatoes and broccolini, which was finally tasty despite small size.
Christmas night dinner here was a prix fixe, which I didn't know in advance but was very pleased with afterward. I started with prawns, which were delicious. Spinach salad was next, perfectly done. I finished with something from the secondi because I didn't want any of the meat options available for the main. So I had the lobster soup (from secondi) and it was delicious. The chocolate cake afterward was rich and superfluous but made the dinner utterly complete. I hope to see all three of my dinner choices on the regular menu on other occasions, as I go to Filini several times a year, probably an average of 1x per month if you spread out all the visits over 12 months. Very good; especially for a "hotel" restaurant. Worth the visit even for locals.
Filini is in a convenient location in Chicago's Lakeshore East neighborhood downtown. We have dined there a few times, and enjoyed it, but on this occasion it was a disappointment. The starters were fine: my mussels were excellent, and my husband said his salad was good, although the greens were soaked in too much dressing. One of our friends had the lobster broth, which he enjoyed. However, our main course pastas were below par, to say the least. We had tortelli, and they were very hard and dry, accompanied by little cubes of pumpkin which were barely cooked at all. The chocolate dessert (shared by four of us) was very good. The restaurant wasn't crowded, and we shared a large booth which was great for conversation, so we had a nice time in pleasant, stylish, surroundings. The meal, however left a lot to be desired.
I made reservations for 1130am to have breakfast before taking my girlfriend to the nutcracker play. It was our first time at Filini. We were lucky enough to get Michael B. as our waiter who was such a nice guy and so fantastic! Breakfast was absolutely incredible and then we relaxed in the holiday themed lobby and had coffee in front of the fire before the play. Wonderful experience, great food, ask for michael B.
