What a great surprise! I was there by chance for the Thursday all day Happy Hour menu. The Truffle Fries were a bargain and delicious. The Pizza was excellent. If they would just upgrade their beer/wine/drink selections it would be outstanding. I would go back nonetheless.
We ate here for dinner. The appetizer jars were the first disappointing item. The "avocado chutney" was a small piece of avocado, with stale tomatoe chunks and a lot of onion. The olive tapenade were cheap black olives mashed up. The entrees were not much better. The sausage pasta and short rib dish were both heavy and uninspired. No thanks -- won't be returning here.
The warmly lit dining room was very comfortable and inviting. We sat at the bar that overlooks the kitchen and prep area which afforded a nice glimpse into the hard work the cooks were putting into their foods. The wine selection was high quality without breaking the bank and the all food was incredibly fresh. What stood out to me was the fish entrée- cooked perfectly with light seasoning that allowed the subtleties of the natural oils in the moist filet to really shine; the side vegetables and potatoes were tender and bursting with flavor. This is a great restaurant for meeting with friends after work, date night, or hosting some out of town relatives to experience high quality cuisine that is distinctly "San Diego".
I wasn't expecting much since I don't usually eat in the area. But once I took a bite of my food I knew it was a good choice. It's a nice place. The food was tasty and the portions were very reasonable for the prices. The restaurant was very short staffed when we went but they handled themselves very well. Great find and highly recommend.
We went on Dec 30th. in the evening after flying into San Diego. It was not a busy night. We had 4 adults and a 3.5 year old - Dylan. Dylan immediately jumped up to the bar seating area where one of the chef's gave him a fresh strawberry. He was so happy. The waiter, Michael, learned Dylan's name quickly and took special are of him and us. Food was great, MIchael was excellent - both from service and friendliness perspectives.
The food here was fine, nothing over the top, but tasty. The service was fine: Friendly and quick. Overall it's a nice reliable, neighborhood spot that's good for a casual night out (or brunch).
One weird thing to mention: The "man candy" on the appetizer list was one thing we ordered, thinking it would come as some sort of bruschetta....On the menu it's under "Bruschetta" so seemed likely. Unfortunately what came out was slabs of crispy bacon. And nothing else! It was really odd. It tasted fine, but we felt pretty silly eating it with our wine!
Had dinner here before a play at the Old Globe. Easy to find parking. Service and ambience very good but food was just okay. I had the filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The asparagus was undercooked, the potatoes a bit heavy, and the filet was certainly not a choice cut. My husband had the gnocchi with a havarti jalapeño cream sauce and chicken with rosemary. This was a much better choice, but still not up to my standards. Generous portions.
Our server stood around A LOT. He never checked on us, was slow, inattentive and had absolutely no knowledge of the menu. I've been to this restaurant twice (trying to give a second chance) but the service both times was terrible, so unfortunately, I won't be back.
We had an early reservation (5:30), and almost had the place to ourselves for much of our time there. Our server got us to a nice table, got us started with a beverage and told us about the specials. We started with the roasted beet and goat cheesed salad and some portobello fries. Delicious! My wife had the sea bass and I had the short ribs, which were perfectly moist and tender, in a delicious sauce with excellent mashed potatoes. She really enjoyed the sea bass too. For dessert, we had the fig pudding with vanilla ice cream, which was great! The atmosphere was perfect for us. Good vibe, good classic rock music at just the right volume. The service was impeccable. Can't wait to go back and try some different menu items!
This place is usually a gem. I really like this place and do plan to return. Unfortunately this past Monday was not a day to go. I look forward to trying this place again when they are back to full form.
Our last visit was not nice. The cheese and meat board was bathed in some brown sauce and topped off with jam from the little rectangle tubs one finds on the table at Denny's. They just opened up the packet and plopped a little rectangle of jelly on the board. The waiter couldn't even tell us what was on the board. He could only say "it has some cheese and dry meats. The soup was potato - but might as well called it watery mashed potatoes. The crispy pork belly was pork - but not crispy.
Fig Tree Cafe turned out to be just the right pick for a family get together. They easily accommodated our party of nine. From the meat lovers (try the Meat Candy) to the vegans, there were multiple choices for everyone. The wait staff were all very attentive. The food was great and the prices were reasonable. And don't miss the Nutella-stuffed doughnuts.
My boyfriend and I came here on a Friday night after trying to find a new restaurant by reading Yelp reviews and OpenTable availability. It was only moderately busy and there was indoor and outdoor (with heat lamps) seatings.

Everything that we ordered was pretty tasty, except the meatballs tasted a bit oversalted. The lobster ravioli was in this chipotle sauce that I thought was pretty delicious. The jalapeños were....jalapeños. But, that's my fault for ordering bar food and expecting a bit more. Service was alright - nothing to write about either way.
I was surprised, though, that the order of bread (I need something for all my sauces!) cost $2. So, the food was good, but as you can tell, the portions were rather small. I left satisfied, but thought that the bill was a bit hefty for not that much food.
I probably would return at least once more and try a few different things. Overall, good, just not amazing.
The staff needs to be a little bit friendlier to its patrons. Our server was ok. My complaint was that when I made the reservation I mentioned that it is my mothers birthday. When I called earlier in the day, I asked if they do anything for birthdays. The girl told me that we can order dessert. Ok, I get that they dont offer a free dessert for guests. However, when our plates were removed from dinner, our bill was immediately served. We were never asked if we wanted coffee or dessert. They just wanted us gone. We were a party of four with an 81 year old. We werent even loud. Fortunately, the D Bar is around the corner and we spent a lot more money on coffee and desserts. Unfortunately, this service ruined my good feeling about this restaurant.
Quiet place, great list of beer and wines. Lots of local fresh foods all made right in the resturant! The cheese and bread appitizer was delicious...big enough for a meal all by itself! We have the artichoke filled ravolli and the taquilla lobster raviolli. Both were awesome! The service was top notch! When Im back in San Diego we will go again!
This was restaurant week and our 1st experience at the Fig Tree. The service was some of the best from the moment I called in advance to change our reservations time as I was running late to our waiter Michael. The presentation of the food was beautiful and courses for $35 is unbeatable. Really enjoyed it. Will be back
We - a family of 4 - had a great Sunday dinner at the Fig Tree during restaurant week. Lovely food (loved loved loved the Kale salad), great atmosphere and faultless service. Great value for money and good wine by the glass. Our kids aged 8 & 10, also loved their food. We can highly recommend and we will be back! Also good for quick lunch, I'm sure!
The varied menu offered a great selection of delicious tasting entrees. We enjoyed rib eye steak and stuffed chicken with vegetable along with spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. The Arugula, wedge and beet salads were all perfectly prepared. We even enjoyed a fig bread pudding for dessert.. All diners enjoyed their meal and were impressed with the presentation and taste of their food.. We'll be back!
