The atmosphere at the restaurant was wonderful. We were hoping for a quiet place with good ambience, and we got it in spades. The service was outstanding. The wait staff was very attentive, without feeling like they were hovering over me. It was overall a very good experience.
On the other hand, the entrees, while still good (and very artistically plated, I should add) , was not up to the standards I would have expected at this price range. My steak was dry, and the quinoa was in was much too salty. The starter bread, however, was a highlight, and the "carb salad" was a delightful spin on poutine.
I would not hesitate to return for a special occasion.
Well when we first walked in we were sent at a hightop table right at the entrance where the cold was absolutely terrible on my back my date was sitting opposite of me at that time two people approached us already we asked if we could move they put us to the table on the left which was nice besides everything else it was pretty good but we are approached by at least four people weather was asking whether the food was good weather was asking for a drink weather was asking if everything was okay I feel that it was a little too much too soon the food was creative I think a little bit too deep-fried for me at the same time I would recommend it to university students or people that just want to get out tapas and wine on a date nothing wrong with it at all
We needed to make reservation for a birthday party and had to have it in Guelph due to our daughter being there for University. Near to impossible to get a place in this student place in the week end, but this restaurant was flexible enough to set-up a special room for group of seven. The service and attention we got was outstanding, and the advice for dish selection was very useful. Special mention of the chef dropping by to see everything was to expectation. This as a very nice touch, and overall a great experience for a special event.
After a disastrous visit 2 months ago (steak not prepared as requested, sent back, food came back again still unsatisfactory after an unacceptable amount of time...almost an hour since food was first presented) we were back to try again with a complimentary meal.
Service and atmosphere were as always fantastic. Lobster dip a previous favourite was ordered again and remains the bright spot of the experience.
Steak was almost correct...3 out of 4 fillets were great. But one was undercooked. It was sent back to the kitchen and returned in an acceptable time frame and was replated with new veggies (vast improvement from previous experience were potatoes after being reheated twice were better used as door stops then actual food). There must have been a veggie shortage or something because the fingerling potatoes accompaning the dish were so sparse and small they were not visible hiding under 2 X 4oz steaks. They were accompanied with a decent portion of rapini and some fried onions. It felt like there could have been another veggie added to round out the dish.
Desserts were creme brulee and peach cobbler. They were ok but definitely not anything worth purchasing if not included in a dinner package.
Overall a pleasant dining experience but it doesn't meet the value of the price affixed to the menu.
The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice and the decorations were gorgeous. It was very relaxing and comfortable. Unfortunately the menu online did not match the menu at the restaurant and many of the items that brought us into done where not available. The food was not exceptional and was less than the expectations we had!! The service was great and the staff tried their best to accommodate the menu items that we were originally hoping for.
Unfortunately the dinner I rec'd was cold - however the staff did take my dinner back and returned with a hot meal after a short wait. They subsequently did not charge us for this meal without any prompting by us - which was a nice surprise when we got the bill. The food once rec'd hot, was good.
We went to celebrate our 2nd anniversary. I had been there for work group dinner but never for personal dining out. It was quiet and a lovely atmosphere. Our server was amazing; very friendly, funny and gave great food & wine advice. The bread was fresh baked and wonderful. Starters were great. Lamb and beef medallion main courses were cooked perfectly to order, a good portion and tasted like a bit of heaven. Wine was excellent. And though we thought we were too full for dessert, our charming server brought out complimentary desserts for our anniversary. Our whole experience was simply wonderful and we are happy we chose Fifty West!
We have been to the restaurant many times and service has been declining in quality for a year now. Reserved a seat in the dining room for our anniversary dinner and were presented with a pedestrian booth in the bar (might as well have been in the lobby). We left when we were presented with stained menus on damaged clipboards circa 1985. Terrible staff and the individual that seated us was totally inept. Won't be back until new management takes over.
The 2 x 4 oz filet meal is fantastic at Fifty West. Been here a few times and always get this even though other items on the menu sound good too. Service is always great, very attentive staff without being intrusive. The Chorizio croquettes (app. special the day we ate here) were also great and can go wrong with the Ploughman's butcher block app either.

The look of the restaurant feels like a hotel restsurant with decor snd lighting and table placement. The food was average. The stir fry was over sauced and the veggies looked over cooked (soft). The steak was ok.
The dessert we chose was the "cookie assortment" it consisted of 3 cookies place on a plate- period- there was no presentation or anything. My daughter said they tasted either stale or like they were just pulled from a freezer. She said she gets better cookies at summer camp.
The service was not exceptional- just good/ friendly.
We arrived at the front, and was told by two passing workers, to hold a moment. We finally had someone come and get us and asked where we would like to be seated. Firstly, we have never been there, how are we to know and after telling him it was our anniversary that we would like something quiet, he told me "honey, it's friday and we are busy, it won't be quiet"...how rude. The server came, took our starters and drinks, after coming back and telling my husband that the red wine he chose wasn't available, he told him to choose for him, he came back with a white. Dinner was horrible, the only thing good was the steak was done but ruined in maple syrup, and who puts pecans in mashed potatoes? My chicken was dry as was the entire meal.
We enjoyed the food very much. We had mussels, calamari, soup, duck, pickerel & steak., great selection we had a difficult time deciding. The portion size was reasonable and the food delicious. The staff was very accommodating to someone in our group with Celiac, and most things could be done gluten free. The service started out wonderful, then just dropped off after we got our mains. A different server eventually came and asked if we cared for dessert and coffee, all but 2 desserts were sold out, and even then it showed up long after we were done our coffee's. A long wait again for the bill, then our original server was back? We waited at the front desk for quite some time, and eventually I just went behind and grabbed my own coat.
Food was very good and our waitress was wonderful we seemed to get a lot better service then other people. Had a good dinner wish they would have done something special or at least a nicer table when told it was our 5th Anniversary. Was kind of disappointed in that. But all and all nice restaurant.
Went there with my wife on a Saturday evening in July. Not overly busy but well attended. Nice atmosphere, great service and amazing food. The appetizers were very good and well presented (shrimp cocktail and ploughmans platter). The mussels at the table next to us looked and smelled amazing - and though an app were meal sized. My wife and I both ordered steak (steak frites and ribeye) and they were both amazing, tasty and cooked to perfection. True steakhouse quality, some of the best we have ever had.
We took friends for brunch, and perhaps our disappointment came from having high expectations...in any case, it failed to live up. I think the food could have been outstanding (it certainly had the appearance a cut above the usual buffet fare), but some of the dishes had not been kept hot enough, and that took away from what would have been an excellent dining experience.
I've eaten at Fifty West ~5 times, and the staff is extremely pleasant. However, there is a notable level of inconsistency from course to course and visit to visit, and at times a bit lacking in attention to detail.
While one course could be a contender for one of the best I've ever eaten, the proceeding menu item could leave one wondering if they're still in the same restaurant. I have had a lobster appetizer arrive frozen in the center with surprise it wasn't fresh, but have spend days raving about the proceeding chicken entree. I've fallen head over heels with perfectly cooked scallops, only to be let down when followed by bland, dry, pre-made and reheated halibut.
The gamble could pay off well, but risk is certainly still present.
The soups were excellent and the best part of the meal.
We both ordered Wellington steak with frites. Both were cooked exactly as ordered. The cut of meat was really fatty and the knives were more like butter knives than steak knives. The steaks came just with the fries, no other vegetables which was very disappointing.
Service was great despite being very busy. They were very knowledgable about the menu when we asked about certain items.
It was good but there are many other places I'd go to first. We're not from Guelph but if we loved close this would be a nice spot to drop into. Otherwise there's lots of other places in the same price range with superior food.
Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were greeted quickly, and or coats were take, hung up, and we were seated quickly.
Our server was slow to come back, but have excellent service when he did come back.
The antipasto had a good selection of cheeses and cured meats, but the bread was a little crusty for my liking.
The appetizer of prosciutto wrapped scallops were to due for.
The main course of lobster tail and beef tenderloin medallions was cooked to perfection, and the mashed potatoes were ridiculously rich.
I'll probably be going back for our next special occasion.
Restaurant seem disorganized when we got there and took a while to be seated. Service at the start was very slow, it took quite a while for waitress to initially come over. After that she was very attentive and very helpful.
Was disappointed in the size of the portions for the food. I had salmon, good taste very nicely prepared for the size would consider it a lunch size portion. It was served with three small pieces of potatoes and one and a half Brussels sprouts (3 pieces) and some sprouts for garnish. Another guest had the steak and frites and found the meat quite touch and had quite a bit of fat on the edges of it. Last person had pickerel and it was over cooked, quite dry.
