Good, local food.
Went for a birthday celebration during Happy Hour. Great to have the option for people to spend more or less as they please. So nice to be able to converse with others down the table without raising our voices! Will definitely go again with my family. Good, attentive service.
Until the TriCitirs gets a high end restaurant this is the choice place to bring out of town guests for the food and the service.
A delicious bottle of wine and three terrific appetizers for dinner -- by the fire pit, on the patio. A wonderful night -- Bookwalter never disappoints. : )
The food and the service was very good. I would not recommend sitting in the kitchen, it was a little loud and it was cold. The rest of the restaurant seemed to have good ambiance but they did not have our reservation (they were not getting reservations from open table) so they sat us in a table in the corner by the kitchen.
I would absolutely go again, the food was fantastic and the server was very warm and a good communicator.
We come to Bookwalter regularly and love their food and wine. This time we came on a busy Friday evening. Normally that would be fine, but this time, while we made an OpenTable reservation prior to coming, the Host/Hostess had no awareness of our reservation. This is the second time that's happened.
As a result, they told us they had only 2 tables available for us to choose from -- one right by the front door -- which would have left us essentially dining with the Host/Hostess, or 1 small table in the back, which required us to climb over 3 people to get to.
We chose the small table in the back because it offered a modicum of quiet as compared to the other table, but that left us sitting in the dark for much of the dinner, until someone came and finally lit the candle on our table (we had asked this to be done roughly 20 min before they got around to it).
Our waiter was moderately attentive -- he was friendly, but he was the only server on the back patio, where we were seated. I think he was just overwhelmed.
We'll definitely be back, but we won't bother with the whole OpenTable thing. Of course, that requires them to answer the phone. That would be a separate issue...it often takes a few tries to get someone on the phone. *Le sigh*
Great wine great food nice people the specials are fun and the menu is very complete but not too big. The happy hour specials are a very good way to experience the restaurant on a budget.
Was disappointed they changed Happy Hour. They switched waiters on us mid-service and never followed up on wine flights, water or much else. Cheese plate needs work, a pile of gerkins? Not one of the better days.
Our seating location was right next to the kitchen. I felt like I was screaming just to talk to my date. The food was great though.
We will give you one more chance, but the first experience was not what we expected at all. I've already left a review about our experience and honestly if you didn't get that one, then saying it again won't matter .
Wow! Visiting Richland one wouldn't expect, necessarily, to encounter a wonderful restaurant with a splended performance by the kitchen. We started with two glasses of Bookwalter wine -- my partner had Chenin Blanc and I thoroughly enjoyed the Protagonist (circa 2013 -- rated at 91 points!). My starter caesar salad (at a very reasonable $5) was fantastic. Quite a large portion, lightly dressed but garlicky flavor. Locally sourced romaine was crisp and wonderful. My partner thoroughly enjoyed her wedge salad with a sliced sirloin steak, cooked perfectly to order.
My taste buds were treated to housemade mushroom ravioli, with a delicious cream sauce with bacon and sliced mushrooms. Off the charts!! It was rich but a perfect match to the Protagonist wine. Very memorable.
If you live in the Tri-Cities, count yourself very lucky that you have this wonderful restaurant in your back yard. I would love to return.
I was super excited to try Fiction since I live near their Woodinville tasting room, love the wine, and have hosted an event there! The atmosphere is great with good parking. It's a bit off the beaten path, but so is Richland in general :). Apart from the below scenario, the food was decent and the wine is delicious!
Then, what started with a confused hostess, who couldn't find my open table reservation and told me on the phone before arriving that we could find a table no problem, transitioned into clumsy wait staff that didn't help as much as they could after spilling water on a member of our party and having broken glass on and underneath her (our neighboring table helped get her a new chair and gave her their napkin), and ended up as poor management offering only a free dessert despite that. It took me going back in to talk to the manager to get them to comp her meal.
As a person in the customer service industry, I feel like I know what it takes to make things right and felt like minimal effort was made. Everyone else seemed to be having a good time, though, so it was probably just our table.
Very disappointed - the restaurant was closed to the public at our documented reservation time. If it's not already the case, OpenTable should make it easy for restaurants to block out times that are not available for the public. The restaurant should also take responsibility for letting OpenTable know when the restaurant will not be available. This was an especially embarrassing experience because we made reservations for when our out of town guests would be here, and we all had great expectations for dining at Fiction. Now we have a very bad impression - the people at the restaurant just smiled at us and said they were sorry, and kind of brushed us off because they were getting ready for a private event. We are not happy at all with what we experienced.
The bacon wrapped dates were amazing! We sat outside and were swarmed by bees when our main course came out! But that's to be expected sitting outside next to a winery :) keep in mind If you are afraid of bees
good food. a lot of hipsters working there.. tattoos, man buns and piercings.
service was slow to start but he got better towards the end. was busy but not that busy. It would be easy to be a server these days, the bar is set so low. My wife and I travel a lot and we do like food but we feel we are not pretensious but yet we are expert consumers and are great judges of good customer service.. I tell you right now if I were a professional server I would kill it. So many these days just don't get it. They haven't been taught or mentored and they just don't have the work ethic or they are just plain stupid.Im not sure what the problem is but we see it regularly....
food was good, they seemed a bit put off because we booked online with Open Table. but over all I would give them another try
This is a good farm to table restaurant that uses locally sourced ingredients. The lamb with the peas was a superb dish that made your taste buds come alive. Enjoyed every bite of the meal.
Great ambiance at night. Setting was beautiful and food and service was great.
Sadly our service was poor. Our server was uninterested and slow. I received a 9 oz pour when I had asked for a 6. When I corrected the server, my second glass was a 9 oz as well, and they charged me!
I brought my niece in to have lunch to celebrate her 15th birthday. She as a teenager really enjoyed to food offerings (she's not too adventurous).
It was a lovely afternoon to hang out in the sun on the outdoor patio and just relax, enjoy some good food, and each other's company.
Food was disappointing. We've been there in the past and it seems food, service and ambiance is going down hill.
Very cool place. It's a winery restaurant. We sat outside with a live band; gorgeous views, expansive grass. Beautiful inside. Several kids there ranging from 3-6yrs. Crowd was mid-50s-60s mostly, family. People who love wine! Very nice crowd, atmosphere, & staff. Staff could have been more on top of the little things - bringing small plates W/apps, butter for bread. Great W/refilling your drinks before you ask, but right when you need it. We had 2 bottles of wine, 2 sodas, 2 apps, 4 entrees, 1 salad, 5 desserts - $245 incl tax (not tip).
Delicious halibut & wedge salad...beautifully presented! Prompt service.
Knowledgeable wait staff for pairing food with wine.
First time using Open Table! So easy, loved it!! Will use it where ever it is available!!
Bookwalter Winery is my favorite winery and restaurant! I've been a Book Club member for many years.
Food was incredible! Very fresh, local. Would definitely go back again! Wine was wonderful too. A definitely place to visit if you are in town.
Good food although the duck was cooked more than asked for. Buzzy atmosphere although live band could only be heard indoors every time door opened and noise level inside was very high. Good service.
Bookwalter is one of my favorite spots in the Tri-Cities, and the Fiction restaurant makes it a must go, in my opinion. The menu is always unique and delicious and it's an equally great place for a date or brunch with friends. It's casual enough to feel comfortable but I feel a bit luxurious going there and the service is good enough to feel special. The price range of food means that I can't go too often, but it's a nice splurge on occasion.
Amazing food. Great service.
Despite having more employees available than customers to serve, it took the server over 30 minutes to take our order, and he never brought the wine list back to our table after we requested it. Although the temperature was in the 90s and there were only two other small tables filled in our immediate area, the server only checked on us twice throughout our 2 hour dinner to fill our water glasses. Overall the food was on par, but the service was so terrible I'm not sure it's worth the trip to dine here again. I understand that coming from Seattle our expectations for service will be a bit above average for the TriCities, but for upwards of $25-$30/plate, the service was very unimpressive and much below our expectations. More than likely we'll give it another shot because of their great wines, hopefully they'll have better service next time.
Wife and myself were kidless for the evening and she tasked me with finding something "quaint". We have been to many "functions" here but not many "sit down dinners". Our food came quickly and was a) PIPING hot!!! Something you rarely find today.....b) delicious!!! We had a bottle of their Rose' and creme brûlée for dessert. Everything was spectacular including the service! Will definitely return more often!!!
First tried to call Bookwalter Winery directly and couldn't get a live person, so made reservations through your site and got a confirming email from you. Upon arriving we were advised by staff they were closed for a special event that evening. I think it very poor customer service that Bookwalter's didn't have a notice on their answering service that they were closed to the public that evening and they most certainly should have advised you so that you wouldn't be confirming reservations on a night they were not open to the public.
A most unsatisfactory experience.
not good, the service was non-existent to terrible....food was OK, but the attitude of the staff left something to be desired. We have eaten at restaurants all over the world and a little tasting/room restaurant in the Tri-Cities should not "put on airs" as if they were in Paris or Beverly Hills. Come on folks, its a gravel parking lot in the desert, be friendly and people will come back.
Ate Brunch here as part of fund raiser for WSU and Children's Hospital. Sat on patio. It was a beautiful day. The wine list was very extensive of their wines. The Food was very good but the menu needs to be enlarged. The server was very knowledgeable about the wines but service was a tad slow.
The bar inside was dark with a décor of a typical bar.
This establishment came highly recommended by friends. Unfortunately, we experienced an epic kitchen failure. Food took an inordinately long time to arrive; people who were seated long after we had arrived were served and finished eating before even one of our plates arrived. The steak was cold. When the 2nd entrée finally arrived, at least the steak was warm. Wait staff seemed in chaos. They did comp everything but one entrée and an appetizer, but there was absolutely no apology of any sort.
Well to start the parking lot is a little confusing gravel lot. I noticed a lot of people who either didn't understand how to park in it or just was to high and mighty to park their cars correctly. The lot is not very big but had a lot of parking for it. It was hard for my wife to walk in it with her high heels but its not that band so it wasn't to far of a walk till you get to the patio. Once there it was a little difficult to figure out which door to go into there is no real sign or marking to say this door. The place was very loud but there were also some big groups there too. But no privacy I barely had enough room to scooch my chair out to get in. Tables are very close together and the rooms did not echo but it did seem to ample the sound at least to me it did.
The food was amazing though! I had the Duck Breast in a duck broth absolutely amazing. The drink prices were not bad not great but as nice as the place is they were reasonable same with the food.
The 3 of us had a great meal and outstanding wine Procrastination! Anthiny (spelled with the i) as he told us, was very attentive and cordial! What a nice place to enjoy a friends company over dinner and vino!!
Happy hour is the best. Outside area with live music is a plus. Pizza needed a bit of salt but after that it was good. Fried avacados are the best!
Love Bookwalter....like our second family! Great food, staff, and atmosphere. You won't want to leave!
On vacation and researched dinner options after a day of wine tasting. Made reservations that afternoon. Arrived early and saw many tables "reserved." Thought we should have made our reservations earlier in the week.
Sat in the room with the kitchen/serving station. Loud clanging plates, and waiters in and out the patio door with dishes/glasses throughout our dinner. One young lady filled our water glasses and commented on the location of our table. Expressed my dissappointment and was told we could have requested to be moved. As a dinner guest, no one should be seated in that environment to begin with! Then we had to question our bill to get the over-charges removed. Spending $$$ for dinner should be an enjoyable experience. Was not the case for us.
Very nice Sunday brunch! We were seated promptly at a nice table by a window. The view was lovely and our meal was outstanding! We had the huevos rancheros and the Brie-L-T. Both were absolutely delicious! Prices were very readonable considering the quality of the food. This would be a regular stop for us if we lived nearby and I would gladly make a day trip to dine here again.
