Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

Mawn was an adventure for my taste buds. When looking at the menu, you're not sure what every ingredient is or what certain dishes will be presented as, but the servers are super knowledgeable and help guide you through the experience. I've had the green papaya salad and loved it! Last night we ordered the oysters, scallops in curry sauce and clams in buttery lemongrass broth. We had a hankering for seafood! The clams were cooked to perfection and I wanted to bathe in the sauce. It required some additional direct spoonful's. Then we had the all star seafood rice and there was no skimping on the precious fruits of the sea. There were shrimp, tons of lump crab, scallops, uni and trout roe. I've had it before and had to have it again, the MAWN NOODLE SOUP! It's a bowl of comfort. It's like a chicken pho, but richer. Lastly we had both the rice pudding and funnel cake for dessert. The funnel cake was light and buttery, paired beautifully with caramel sauce and the rice pudding had a mountain of light, airy whipped cream. Between the two of us, we had just the right amount of food and some friend rice to enjoy later. The meal transported me back to Asia. It's amazing what can come out of a small row home in South Philly!

We never have a bad meal at Parc. We met friends for an early (11:30 a.m.) lunch. As lunch proceeded, the place got louder, but never to the point that we had to yell to hear each other. Much appreciated, as some restaurants are now so loud it is painful to hold a conversation. Mushroom soup was delicious, especially with the bread basket. I teamed it with the ravioli appetizer, and it was a perfect amount of food. Others in the group had the roast beef sandwich, which they said was very good, Another member of our group had the salmon sandwich, which, again, was very good. We didn't have room for desserts. Our waiter was attentive, answering all our questions and suggesting items to try. The front desk staff was welcoming when we arrived, and wished us well when we left. So much hospitality!

One of our favorite places, Finnbar never disappoints. With the best crew; knowledgeable, impassioned, and friendly. Great, cozy digs; the draft-stopping drapes and new acoustical panels made a huge difference in creating our recent snug experience. And the food is simply the best around; seasonal, fresh, inventive, and creative without being twee or too much. The love shines through in every way at this special spot, where there's something for everyone and everyone is welcome. So glad your here Finnbar, thank you!

The food was fabulous! We have been coming here since 1990 or so and have seen changes along the way. The current chef is amazing and I will absolutely be coming back. It was busier than I've seen on a Thursday night in a long time but they are having Locals Nights on Wednesday and Thursday. You can order from their specials featured for these nights OR the usual menu which is nice.
