Fearrington House Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The atmosphere is elegant and quiet and great for a special occasion. The food was mostly excellent, though a little bit of a slip up on a friend's special dietary needs. Felt the service, while relaxed, was a little too slow -- took a long time to get our first course and then our main course. Overall really nice, but we felt a little too pricey for what you get.
It is rare for anything to live up to expectations nowadays. The Fearrington House has an impressive reputation, from Forbes, AAA, and La Liste, to name just a few. I am happy to say that they not only met my expectations, they exceeded them! Cody and his colleagues made our anniversary celebration unforgettable! I say without reservation that this was the best meal of our lives!
The Fearrington House is a very nice place to have dinner; most guests dress well and the servers are impeccably dressed. Reservations are probably a good idea.
You are taken care of by a staff consisting of one or more excellent waiters who will be able to recommend their favorite courses on the menu that evening or make suggestions depending upon what you feel like having; a knowledgeable sommelier who can recommend a wine that will match (or get close to) your dinner selections and who will decant your wine from sediments in the bottle after asking you; and several servers who take care of your water, dinner courses, pre-courses and post-courses. The food is delicious and, in many cases, will be new to your palate (keep in mind that sometimes the consistencies of new foods are not exactly what one expects; this might be a put-off to some while to others it might be fun). They usually have 3-5 selections to choose from for each course that you select. The portions are not as large as one usually would get at a more main-line or chain restaurant, but you do end up full at the end of the meal. That part is magic to me; although it might have something to do with my eating more slowly when each of the courses show up after a time instead of all appearing on the same plate at once. Dinner will take at least a couple hours; so I would recommend taking someone you know well so that you have a lot to talk about for the entire dinner, rather than taking someone who you feel less-inclined to share with; that might make for some uncomfortably long gaps in the dinner conversation.
As much as I enjoy the Fearrington House, it is not a place that I can afford to go for every-day occasions. I would save it for the very special occasions like a large-numbered anniversary, important decade birthdays, etc. I say this because ordering wine and two four-course meals will run you around $350.00 for the evening. On a Wall Street salary, that might be cheap, but not for me.
Perhaps my expectations were too lofty, but my main course was bland and the duck quite chewy. Although the waiter followed up promptly after the food was delivered to enquire about our satisfaction level, it wasn't until I was several bites into the duck that my disappointment grew. I left 2/3 of the main course unfinished on my plate and there was never thereafter one query by either the capitain or the waiter as to why. That is not what I would expect from such a highly touted restaurant.
The location and surroundings alone make Fearrington house well worth the effort! Add to it the farm to table, seasonal menu and this is one of the best places for a special date or special occasion. We had the 7 course vegetarian option and were BLOWN away! We will definitely be back for our next special occasion.
My husband and I had the Chef's tasting menu that was truly outstanding. In addition, the service was exemplary as well. We loved the surroundings of the lovely countryside and the shops of Fearrington Village. We will certainly go to the Fearrington House more often.
Dinner was delightful for a very special occasion. Service was fantastic. The food was good; presentation superb. Wine pairings were interesting. This was definitely not a “value” experience; a three course dinner with wine pairings and tip was $480, but for a special occasion was worth it.
Someone, a Yankee, once told me that a Southerner's idea of a great meal was "$4.99 all you can eat ." Fearrington House is at the other end of that spectrum in both price and quantity. My memory of the Fearrington House goes back to the late 40's when I would sleep upstairs while my parents would play bridge with the Fearrington's.
This is the finest meal I have ever had. Over the last 50 years, I have had the pleasure of working in sales with companies that had relatively high entertainment budgets. I have entertained clients coast to coast and border to border. The uniqueness of the Fearrington House menu and the service of the wait staff is obvious when you place your order. Even the bread choices are wonderful and different.
We did not have wine but overheard a nearby table who had an appreciation for fine wines commenting that the wine selection was unequaled in their experience.
Just so you will not be surprised by the food selection or price, download the menu from the Fearrington House website. Even with the high prices, you will pay to enjoy a meal at Fearrington House, you will leave pleased with your investment.
Great restaurant for a special occasion. Relaxed courses so allow ample time for dinner. Chocolate souffle is one of the best desserts I have had in recent memory. Personalized menu for anniversary dinner and truffles at the end of dessert was a very nice touch.
This restaurant is extremely expensive and we could only think about eating here for a very, very, very special occasion. Be prepared to spend at least $150 per person and this is the 4 course dinner WITHOUT the wine pairing (you can add another $105 per person to have this included as part of your meal.) . The dinner was nicely prodded and the restaurant itself is in a very nicely preserved old 2-story home, but my wife and I agreed that the whole experience was not worth anything near what the cost was. It's unlikely we'll eat there again, but we had to try it.
As in the past, the food was imaginative, well prepared and served. Each course was special ( we had the three course dinner.; don't miss the chocolate souffle) The wine list is exceptional and and we matched our meal with a half bottle of Brunello. They sent us home with a small box of superb truffles.
We were a bit disappointed.
It was our second visit and we expected great service and food. We got great service but food was not on par with the service. Food was slow to come out. I ordered cod fish as second course and lobster as third course. Both were undercooked. They brought out another fully cooked second. Then came the lobster. Took 2 bites before I realized the thicker section of tail was not cooked through. By then it was 2 hrs since we sat down and dessert was not served yet.
The restaurant earns its five-star rating in countless little ways, as well as by its excellent food. The staff is very attentive, but does not hover. The chef is very creative and the food is meticulously prepared. The wine and cocktail menus are impressive. We enjoyed a four-course anniversary meal that was simply sumptuous. It is not inexpensive, but the price seemed appropriate for the level of quality dining and service.
We celebrated our anniversary at the Fearrington, and had a wonderful meal! The beef tenderloin entree was incredible, and the chocolate souffle was absolutely amazing! Service was excellent, atmosphere was fantastic, it was the perfect place for celebrating a special occasion!
We had an amazing dinner here! We choose the Chef's tasting dinner for two along with the wine pairings and it was truly a night to be remembered. They add all kinds of special touches to the meal including courses they don't tell you about until they bring them to you. They made sure everything was 100% gluten free for me, and we enjoyed every bite! They even send you home with your personal printed menu and home made chocolates. Wonderful restaurant and experience!
A delightful restaurant and hotel in a semi rural spot yet within easy access of Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham. The food is beautifully presented and delightful, the service was impeccable and the wine list very extensive. The Chocolate Soufflé, which was excellent, I was told had been on the menu continuously for the last 36 years! A restaurant for a special occasion; we visited for our wedding anniversary and there were some very nice touches including a Menu with our name on to take home together with some home made jam and chocolates.
Everything was delicious and beautiful. I had said it was our anniversary when making the reservation and they printed a special menu for us. All of he food was delicious and the wine pairings were amazing.
They even do extra things like aperitif and boxed chocolates after dessert.
A bit fancy and expensive for us on the regular, but perfect for a special occasion.
We were extremely impressed with our experience at Fearrington House Restaurant. We live just a few minutes away but had never been. Went for my wife's birthday and we were both truly blown away by the entire experience -- most notably the food itself. It was out of this world. I had no idea such fine dining could be found so close to home in Chatham County, NC. Outstanding! We will be back for sure -- I haven't been able to stop thinking about some of the new flavors we experienced. And the wine and cocktails are also off the charts. Never had a sazerac outside of NOLA that I liked, but they nailed it here.
I have the great good luck to live in the Fearrington Village and the restaurant is less than a mile away from my house. I always use it for special occasions knowing that I and my guest(s) will have a great experience. My only suggestion, and it is a minor one, would be to have valet parking.
Keep up the good work!
My family and I celebrated my birthday here last evening. This was our second time dining here. One of the nicest restaurants I've ever been to. They didn't disappoint last night either. Service is attentive without being pretentious or overbearing. The clear, fresh flavors of the food are amazing. We indulged in the wine pairing for each course and loved everything that was poured for us. We learned so much from the sommelier. The Fearrington House should be saved for a special occasion and relished.
Fantastic dining experience! I took my fiance there for his birthday and we tried the chef's tasting. The food was creative, delicious, and perfectly prepared. They even gave us some house made strawberry jam and hand painted truffles to take home. I highly recommend them for a nice meal!
Wifey and I celebrated in style last weekend for our anniversary. Fearrington House is not for the penny pincher, except perhaps for Restaurant Week. We had an amazing meal, which can be tough to be had as a vegetarian. We got the vegetarian tasting menu with wine pairings. That, plus a cocktail, set us back to what I paid for my first car. But, it was so worth it. Inventive, scrumptious, and simply fantastic! There were at least nine courses, if you count the amuse bouches. The wine pairing were delicious too.
We've been to a Michelin star restaurant, and Fearrington House is definitely on par. Superb stuff.
Awesome, never disappointed! Every dish is a culinary delight. Your taste buds will thank you, all the descriptions are experienced. We come every season to taste the most well crafted foods. From the muffins that melt in your mouth, the spinach soup with lemon custard- a perfect match, foie gras to close your eyes for, octopus so delicate, rabbit wrapped in prosciutto surprises you with the most delicious duck confit in the center, and never leave without having the best chocolate soufflé! Happy to know it's in my backyard!
