About Favela Cubana
Favela Cubana is a place where food, music and culture convey. The food is inspired by both Brazilian and Cuban cuisines, with the rich flavors and spices of Latin America. It is not a fusion of both cuisines but rather separate cuisines side-by-side on the same menu.

Favela Cubana Ratings and Reviews
Very friendly service, they went above and beyond to accommodate us as one of us is in a wheelchair. Staff is very friendly, smiling all the time. Restaurant interior design gives you a feeling of being away in another country, food is great! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anybody who wants to taste some different flavors.
We chose Favela because it was very close to the Skirball Theater (NYU) where we had tickets. Our friends were late but the staff was accommodating in serving them on time to make the performance.
My soup was good with just enough spice to make it interesting and the pulled pork sandwich was filled with fine flavors and ample enough for a light supper. My wife liked her salmon that was perfectly cooked and well seasoned.
We would definitely return there next time we are in the neighborhood.
It was my birthday dinner and literally called 4 hours before the dinner to reserve for 11 people. They totally saved my last minute butt!
The outside looks cute and it's cozy inside-the space is small. Their drinks are strong. I had gotten the Favela Cubana mojito but it was too strong for me(didn't taste good) so I got the passion fruit mojito instead. The GUAC IS AMAZING! We got 3 rounds because it was so good. Overall their food is really yummy. My favs are the gaucho steak, salamao, and the pan seared shrimp dish(forgot the name). They also have this housemade hot sauce that is ACTUALLY spicy! Our waitress was super energetic and accommodating for such a large party like mine. So I definitely recommend!
This is my recent find on a quiet street behind. NYU. The mojitos are to die for! Their guacamole is some of the best I ever had as are the mussels! My friends swear by their chicken soup and roast chicken. Cheese bread is not chewy enough and mixed seafood fry is a bit flavorless but doesn't matter as most other dishes are so delicious. Service is friendly and warm.
Chose this restaurant last minute for lunch during a girl's weekend in the city, as it fit our location needs and it was a cuisine we all liked. We couldn't have picked a better spot! It has great atmosphere, with lively (but not overbearing) music and festive decor. We sat inside due to the heat, but the doors were wide open to the outside dining area so we didn't feel overly enclosed. We ordered some empanadas to share (the chicken were better than the beef) and a variety of entrees that were all very good. Nothing overly spicy, but they do have what appears to be house-made hot sauce that you can use to kick things up several notches. We also ordered a round of cocktails that were good and very reasonably priced by NYC standards. The only slight negative was that they forgot one of the drinks from our initial order, and the bar was a little slow in getting us both the initial order and the missing drink. Somewhat understandable as they seemed to have only one bartender and a lot of people ordering Mojitos! Overall, a good find and we would definitely consider going back.
I booked Favela for my graduation dinner and it was perfect. I had been before for dinner and happy hour since I went to NYU but with smaller groups. I was a bit worried as my reservation had changed for 10 to 12 ppl when we came to the restaurant, but they were gracious and accommodated us. Later on, other family members joined us and they got them a different table, without batting an eyelash. The food and drinks were on point as usual. The service was outstanding! I will keep returning and refer them to family and friends.
I've sinned here a few times. I have yet to have a bad experience. With a larger party (like in any rest) could get sloppy. Largest party I've come with was six but I think the server and waiter did a great job to make sure everyone was being taken care of. Food has been very filling and full of flavor. Nothing is too oily or salty. (Well the appetizers can get a bit oily)
Server was rushing clearing everything out the way food did not taste like Cuban food the paella rice was not cooked the I don't recommend at all and don't believe their Yelp reviews they have a sign in the restaurant saying they will give a free dessert if you show the server you rated them 4-5 stars on Yelp
For a latin place there was a limited number of Latin (cuban) dishes. although the initial drinks where good the overall service was minimal at best. Took way to long to take orders and then when we thought the food would be coming we are told some dishes were no longer available. The food ws adequate not a genuine resemblance to latin spices nor cuban. We were offered drinks to compensate for the extensive delay on food but then they showed up in the total bill. When asked about it they offered two deserts (which we didnt want) and charged us fro the drinks. Since we had a function to go to we had to rush through eating once the food finally came. Not a great experience. Oh yeah whats with the automatic adding of the tip to the bill ?????? We made the manual adjustments. But overall all very disappointing, not a place I would recommend nor go back to. :-(
no tostones, maduros, yuca, ???? First time I'm served Brussell sprouts with fish in a mango sauce ??? It didn't say that on menu.
The food was very good at least mine, portions are pretty big. We went for Brunch and ordered to unlimited drinks, which was kind of annoying since the waitress will write down the exact time and then keeps asking what time is it and finish it at the exact 90 minutes (i'm fine with it but) I think is kind of rude coming asking for the time and I order one last drink and was denied. (it was only one drink of a table of 5 )
We used to have great experience at this restaurant, but our recent visit was disappointing. We ordered some of their classical dishes. The rice was very salty, whereas the meat was bland. The waiter was friendly, but the bus boy was rude and seemed to be in a rush despite that there weren't many people there that night.
Met my son after a visit to NYU. Centrally located in the NYU campus area, I could see how this restaurant would be a very popular place. We ate midday, and we had fantastic service. Not crowded at all during our visit.
My sons comment?! The best meal I have eaten in a long time. That comment encapsulates our dining experience. It was a great meal. Will be returning.
