Fat Rice Ratings and Reviews
We sat at the bar where a super-friendly server (I'm sorry I can't recall his name, but he's a redhead) took excellent care of us.
The "drink your vegetables" cocktail was awesome with the trio of appetizers we shared - peanuts, eggplant and pigs ears - all of which I'd order again in a heartbeat! So many flavors and textures with a nice amount of heat without being overwhelming. The arroz gordo was more than we could finish between the two of us, and every bite was delicious.
Of the new places we tried on this trip, this is top of my list for a return visit!
The Chili prawns probably rank as a top 10 favorite dish from anywhere. Bacon fried rice was as good as you would hope and the peanuts were surprisingly complex and tasty. The vegetarian glass noodles were underwhelming, despite a lovely presentation, not quite bland, just one-note flavor. Service was friendly and attentive. Looking forward to our next visit.
The two of us had the arroz gordo and it was delicious! just a tad too much for two people, but the flavors of every component of the meal was amazing. It had a great balance of asian and portuguese influences and they work so well! It also went really well with the Mango Mimosas!
The vibe is vibrant, with great decor and friendly staff. We sat at the bar and enjoyed watching the chefs doing what they do best.
Will definitely come back when we're back in Chicago.
The signature dish was probably the tastiest dish I have ever eaten; however the shell stuck so close to the shrimp flesh, it was almost impossible to separate, resulting in messy fingers & macerated protein. Having peeled millions of shrimp before, perhaps, if you want to preserve the 'head on' look, could I be so presumptuous perhaps peeling the body shell in the kitchen?
Altho as charming & informative as he could be early, our server & most of the others for that matter, were AWOL for 30', resulting in looking at dirty empty dishes forever. You couldn't turn over the table either. He suggested the black rice dessert....please cook the rice next time!!!!He called it 'texture'....I called it RAW.
You can call it 'energetic' noise level if you want....I call it 'too loud for comfort'. When you have to stand up & lean across the table to talk to you dining companions, that's too loud. Turning down the music might help, but only a tiny bit.
Really delicious fusion of Asian and Latin foods. I LOVED the soft shell crab and the pork shoulder!! And must save room for the desserts: the black rice yogurt was amazing and the bun with ice cream in the middle was worth going to the restaurant for even if you didn't like anything else.
My wife and I loved our first visit to Fat Rice. The dining room is relatively small and some might find the communal table situation to be intimidating , but the ambiance is fantastic, energetic, but not overly noisy. Honestly some of the best service we have had in Chicago. Our Waiter Kelly was attentive, provided a great overview of the menu and cocktails, and never let our water glasses come close to being empty. The food was a home-run as well. We started with the Pork and Shrimp Potstickers, which were fantastic, and shared the namesake Arroz Gordo for our main. We will definitely be back!
Have been meaning to come here since I moved and finally made it here for lunch today. Requested the patio because it was a beautiful day- set away from the street and quietly secluded yet with tons of flowers and plenty of sunshine. Scott took incredible care of us, has great menu and ingredient knowledge and genuinely seems to want to be there. We will definitely be back for dinner!
Excellent dining experience! Our server was extremely helpful in going thru the menu, other service staff had our water glasses refilled after almost every drink we took and the food was amazing. Unique, delicious and leaves you wanting more. This was our first visit and definitely plan on returning!
The food and service were excellent, we made a reservation for Saturday at 1:30 PM and we arrived well before time - when we checked in we were told that there was no space inside the restaurant anymore and we would have to sit in the patio - usually we would have been completely ok with this but we had our mom with us who wasn't too comfortable with this. We were told we would have to wait for an hour for a table inside which was puzzling because we made a reservation.
The food was excellent however we wish we would have been told of the possibility of not getting seated inside at all even with a reservation.
The food was perfect for foodies. We enjoyed our "fat rice". Eating seated on a bar stool was not comfortable but we had no choice this is part of their set up. Good thing about this is we met some nice people at the bar. Service was great, friendly and very helpful. We had brunch and we were the last one served bad side was they were in a hurry to close but the good side was they packed some sweet freebies for us to go. All in all we enjoyed our brunch and we'll be back for dinner.
Wasn't quite sure what to expect going into this, but I had heard rave reviews (all correct) and wanted to try it out. My boyfriend is a chef so he tends to be a bit more... particular about where we dined. However Fat Rice came recommended by many of chef and foodie friends so we went. The restaurant is small with no waiting area, but they have a great cocktail lounge that is just 2 doors down where you can drink and wait. We were 30 minutes early for our reservation, but were still seated in 15 minutes. I also work at an amazing Asian Fusion restaurant and this is on par. We will definitely be back!!
Food was not good. One dish had a rice 'brick' as a side included. Apparently it was to have the consistency of a breakfast hash brown but made of rice. I told the waiter it was over cooked and how hard it was to get through with a fork, he asked if I wanted a knife. The gyoza were very oily. The Malort and Gin Drink was oddly tasty. Takeout Chinese food is better than their food.
Save your money and skip this place. Not worth going west of Ashland.
I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. This is truly the most amazing fusion cooking in Chicago today. Ah the flavors! If you have never been - go! I f you have been there before I know you will go back again. And they are opening a new bakery next door. Can't wait!
This was a nice find, my daughter and I both enjoyed our meal. I had the pork chop sandwich which was very juicy and tasty. My daughter ordered a veggie plate. Our server noticed it was incorrect and had the order remade for her. The staff were all very nice, I also liked the bakery items they had brought in from the neighborhood, nice touch. We will be returning.
