We were seated 45 minutes after our reservation. Also, our server was not the best. He kept forgetting items and needed to be reminded what we were fairing on.
We enjoyed our dinner so much at the Fat Hen that we ended up having lunch / brunch on the way out of town. We stayed at the Sanctuary and arrived a day before our gang so we went off Island for a little local flavor.
My husband and I are from Connecticut and this was our first time at Fat Hen. Everything was awesome. We got the Farmer's platter and crab soup to start. The Farmer's platter consisted of house cured meats accompanied by pickled veggies and fruit. So many unique and different flavors. Crab soup was buttery heaven. For dinner we had the meatloaf and the lamb shank. My husband thinks my meatloaf is better but I have to say I'd love the receipt for the collards. What did they do to them? So good. I helped my husband with the lamb shank. A very healthy portion! It was accompanied with veggies and cheesy grits. The combo was sooooooo good! Everything was great, but that shank was the best. Melted in our mouth! We couldn't get dessert. Too full. I would come back if we ever make it back to Charleston.
We decided to go to Fat Hen for our 48th Wedding Annivesary. As usual, the food and service was excellent.
It was the first time I was here. Food was fantastic. They had great wine deals. Service was good. The table we were at was very small and I was pinned in near the door. I'm 6'5. Would have liked a little more room but all in all a great meal. Highly recommend.
Fun and lively. The French flair comes through in the Southern Cuisine.
This was definitely worth the drive out of downtown Charleston for a great brunch spot, even if we had to wait about 20 minutes for our Uber back to the hotel. The classic southern breakfast items with some of the more modern or inventive twists on the classics went really well together. My husband is still talking about how much he loved the country fried steak and the bacon cheese grits. It really was the perfect breakfast for him on our last day in Charleston. The french toast was also very good - even though I would have loved more strawberries - it was exactly what I was looking for. We started with the fried green tomatoes and they actually were the perfect way to start off brunch - not too big, but enough to tie us over while the kitchen worked on our entrees. If you are looking to go here for brunch, be sure to make a reservation. The wait without one seemed really long as many locals head here on Sunday mornings. So if you're visiting Charleston and staying downtown, be sure to make the 20 minute drive out to Fat Hen - your tummy will thank you when you leave full and very happy.
The food at The Fat Hen is so exceptional that it is actually surprising. The location is a bit out of the way on Johns Island. For visitors on Kiawah (as we were) it is a 30 minute drive. But it is worth driving. Our party had Shrimp and Grits, Coq au Vin, Lamb Shank, Crab Soup, Crab Cakes, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Collard Greens. Delicious!!! Even the Pommes Frites were great. Such a great combination of true low country dishes and French cuisine. Worth the drive and worth the wait (if you show up for dinner after 7:00 on a Friday or Saturday you will probably have to wait because it well deservedly packed.
