Fat Belly's Grill and Bar Ratings and Reviews
Without question - one of the best burgers I've ever had. Asked for it medium well, and it came out medium well. Rarely happens. Hand cut salt and vinegar fries, cooked to perfection. Waitress was attentive - checked in twice during the meal. She made it known she was there, but wasn't annoying about it. Window seating at sunset made for great conversation too. Prices were reasonable for downtown Portsmouth.
Bottom line: it's a pub. Kind of tight seating, but so worth it.
We made a reservation for 5pm for NY eve. We got an email from the establishment a few days before saying there may be delays. We arrived at 4:45 to see if we would be seated on time. They said they couldn't find my reservation but could seat us now.
They took our order & brought our drinks quickly. It took a little while longer for our food to come out. Unfortunately our orders were wrong. My daughter ordered chicken fingers/fries & side cesar. She got a cesar with grilled chicken on top. The vege's on my burger were wrong & I got fries instead of salad.
When I mentioned to the waitress that she brought the wrong order she denied it. My daughter didn't want to wait for them to redo it so we kept it. Don't know if the error happened by the waitress or in the kitchen. Chicken ended up being too spicy for my daughter.
Food was fairly good. Good portions.
When we finished I asked the waitress to make sure we were charged for what we ordered vs what we received (didn't want to be over charged). She gave me a frustrated look & said ok.
Nothing too special. Apparently, "medium rare" means something different to me (I wanted "hot pink" and told the waitress such, but the hamburger arrived midterm, on the verge of medium well). Otherwise, the fries were good and the location was great for people watching. :) I later walked to Clark's Ice Cream, since it was only a couple of blocks away, and that was great.
We went for dinner on a Friday night, this was a great alternative to the more upscale places in the area who take themselves way too seriously! The food was good, hot and fast - service was excellent and everyone seemed pretty happy to be there! We had a great time and think for a casual meal it's a great choice - we will be back again for certain.
We arrived at 4:30 and were seated at a table for 4 in an area of the restaurant that should have been a table for 2. Waited about 10 minutes and no one came to our table. We were about to leave when he spoke with the inexperienced hostess. She explained to us the she forgot to tell out waitress that she seated us. Never once offered us anything for the inconvenience, but told us not to take it out on our waitress. Apps were Luke warm at best. Food was ok for the type of restaurant this was. When we left there was no one around.
Been waiting to stop in and me and wife had the opportunity recently. Make it better it was on a Thursday so they had the $.49 chicken wings!! Advertise their wings And with good reason.. The wings were large and quite tasty! Teriyaki were excellent! I had a burger and it was very juicy and cooked right. I recommend a visit if you're in the area as there are many weekly deals provided.
Our daughter heard about Fat Belly's and we went one evening when we visited her at UNH. Great place, great service. Wings are the bomb---yummy!! Nachos were delicious too. Our burgers were tasty and inside were done well, but the outside was a little overdone for our liking. Everything else was good and we'd definitely go there again!
We ate at Fat Belly's on a busy Saturday night. We new this was a casual, family friendly restaurant. Unfortunately we were seated next to a table of pound and unruly toddlers. The mother's had no control over the two boys. As this disruption continued for about 20 minutes, the manager checked in with us and apologized and offered us a round of drinks. This simple gesture is a display of great customer service. The waitress was truly attentive and the nachos and burgers were awesome!
I will temper my reaction somewhat because this day was the first day in approximately four months n which people were out and walking about - it was a looooong winter, folks. AND it was the start of Restaurant Week in Portsmouth. Having said that, our reservation was for 5pm because we needed to leave by 6:30 to attend a nearby concert. Let me just say, we barely made it there on time. Service was s l o w and felt chaotic. Food was okay, but it was difficult to enjoy ourselves because of the very slow service, even though 5pm is hardly anyone's idea of "prime" meal time. Nerve-wracking.
Do not go here. it is dirty, loud and the food is not very good. Me and my boyfriend were on a weekend vacation and choose this place based on good reviews. It is a small hole in the wall, which would be fine but it is not clean the service is confusing to say the least and when the food did come it was not good. I ordered a burger which was over cooked and greasy and the fries were limp and tasted like old oil. There appeared to be a club upstairs which was loud and distracting.
Knowing Portsmouth to be a foodie's paradise, we looked up a yummy place to eat on Open Table. Boy were we disappointed by Fat Belly's. The ambience was loud and the place dirty and reminded me of a run-down Applebees. The chicken sandwich I ordered, while edible, was nothing special. My husband's pulled pork sandwich was just okay. Both my sweet potato fries and his regular fries were greasy, limp and cold -- and had the taste of old oil. Nothing worse! Next time we'll just walk around until we find a good place on our own!
The burgers were fine, lots of options and cooked to order, no one complained, but when you enter the restaurant you are greated with cleaning supplies stacked up on the side. Floors weren't exactly spotless but you kind of got the feeling they intended to create that "atmosphere". Regular fries are skinny, sweet potato fries an option - both actually crispy - hard to do. I'd say there are better places but we had a group and they took reservations on this system, so that was what we needed.
They seems to specialize in burgers and cajun seasoning on the burgers. And they are amazing. I had he honey glaze cajun burger and it was perfect! Also great seasonal beer selection!! If going on a popular night like Fri or Sat I do recommend making a reservation because event though it is not super fancy, we never would have gotten in! Overall great food, drink, and price! Also, the fried pickles are the best!
I was a little concerned when the place was empty a little after noon on a Tuesday. I definitely got that, "this is a bar, not a grill" feeling. However, the selection was better than standard bar fare and everything was very good. My only complaint was that my burger was well done instead of medium. Fortunately it was still moist.
Also, business was bustling by the time we left.
