Faros Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Not Greek to me....Back again after a month with a large greek heritage family group celebrating a rare get together at a somber occasion. This time the appetizers were not as spectacular. The meatballs were dry and overbaked and when called to the waiters attention he checked with the chef and said they had to be fully baked as they are make with pork---not a good answer. They were not dry last time. The saganaki was a bit too oily. The big greek salad is spectacular and very fresh loaded with greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, feta, olives . The orzo with lamb was terrific, just enough tomato based sauce and lamb pieces. The moussaka was layered with eggplant and rich sauce and the pastitsio had rich sufficient sauce with the pasta layers. Only trouble was getting our favorite table next to the window as we had 4 children of various ages and that is not the ambiance they want to portray, I am quite sure. We did manage to get it though.
Faros is a very dependable neighborhood place. Good food, decent prices, very attentive service. Maybe it's not one of the greatest Greek restaurants in New York, but I could happily go here once a month.
The main dishes are very good (especially the vegetarian moussaka), but for me the appetizers are the standouts. Saganaki, spanikopeta, grape leaves, and other essentials of Greek food. The wine list is decent, containing several Greek wines.
Greek specialties at high quality....As a Greek heritage family we are always looking for well prepared greek food. This local spot on 7th Ave in Brooklyn just fits the bill. The portions are generous and you can have a wonderful variety of greek dishes by choosing 4 or 5 small appetizers. The keftedes (greek meatballs) were tender and juicy as is the flaming saganaki, eggplant and traditional avgolemono soup, to name a few... Moussaka is flavorful and very well seasoned, with the right touch of cinnamon. Definitely worthy a visit.
A horrible experience of being totally ignored by the wait staff, while other diners who arrived after us were tended to out of order. We waited more than 10 minutes with no more attention than water, got up, and left after seeing that they were clearly understaffed, and the outdoor guests took precedence over the few inside guests like us. Terrible management.
My sister and brother in law who with dined with us have been to Greece and said the food was very authentic. Their moussaka is the definition of comfort food and was excellent. There are vegetable and meat options of the moussaka which is also nice. The Lamb shank special with roasted potatoes was also superbly seasoned and prepared. Service was very good. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
The service was good mostly (see below) and the place is pleasant but I was disappointed in the food. A friend and I shared a simple salad which had some goat cheese, much less than restaurants usually provide. The greens were fresh but the salad wasn't special. The main disappointment was the entree. Bronzino was a special that day and usually Greek restaurants make great fish. We both ordered it. I expected a great grilled taste but the fish was plain without much flavor. The waiter asked if we wanted it deboned and we said yes, but they didn't explain that would be $8 extra. Surprises aren't fun in eating out. Also, pilaf is listed on the menu accompanying entrees, so I expected pilaf with the fish but we were kale, which I don't like. I should have asked them to substitute pilaf but was hungry and just at the fish. Again, surprises aren't fun.My friend seemed happy and ate everything, so to each his own.
It was super delicious. Only downside was we were seated in the upstairs area which had less of a warm ambiance than downstairs, it felt almost like a function hall for events. But I think it's because we arrived late to our reservation.
I would definitely come back here, very good place.
We had shrimp on a bed of linguine and the lamb shank special. First was an oily mess. Latter was browned too long so that the outer part was like eating a mix of wood and paper. The inside had no flavor and I don't even know what the sauce was supposed to be. Side of green beans was like it came out of a can. Just bad.
We walked into Faro 1/2 hour early (6pm) following a Sunday afternoon concert at Brooklyn Library. The staff were welcoming, They suggested a table to the side - perfect for two friends chatting over a birthday dinner. The menu selections discussed we chose salads and a main course. My grilled octopus was tasty! Because it was my birthday we finished with a tray of various pastries that were thoughtfully presented. Accepting the server's suggestion we took home a bonus of grapes and orange slices decor from the dessert plate! We enjoyed the dinner made pleasant by the attentive but not intrusive service. Bravo!
Our group has been here several times and we just keep coming back for more. Their appetizers are all good, especially spanakopita and saganaki. If you still have room for a main, the moussaka (vegetarian or with meat) is delish. If you enjoy Greek, Faros is for you.
We've been going to Faro's for a while now and it's historically been pretty good. For whatever reason, lately, the service and food quality has gone down significantly.
We also went there for Valentine's dinner and they had a fixed menu (only) that was wildly overpriced and the food seemed like it was made it bulk and had been sitting around waiting to be served. It felt like a cheap attempt to squeeze some extra bucks out of people on Valentine's day.
