In its funky and eclectic restaurant, filled with rusty decor and a lime green ceiling, Farmer Brown is a soulful eatery with modern flair. Sensational starters, like the sweet potato steak fries with spiced salt and lemon aioli and the fried shrimp and cheesy grits bites, speak to Farmerbrowns southern comfort food aesthetic. Popular entrees include the crispy cornmeal catfish platter candied yams, blue lake beans, pickled onions & sauce gribiche, the classic barbecue baby back ribs plate with pickled veggies and the jumbo blackened prawns and stoneground grits. An amazing brunch is served at Farmer Brown, with such items as angel biscuits with mushroom gravy and crispy fried chicken and waffles delighting diners every weekend.
The southern specialties extend into the drinks menu, where the front porch iced tea with flavors of bourbon, seasonal fruit, housemade ginger nectar, fresh brewed tea, served in a mason jar, is a refreshing drink to enjoy with your meal.

FarmerBrown Ratings and Reviews
Had NYE dinner hear on Sunday night. We started with the fried okra/shrimp appetizer. Amazing. Okra cooked perfectly. Large shrimp. Perfect breading. Then moved on to Fried Chicken and Waffles. We added Maple syrup (passed on the sorghum syrup...) and it was fantastic. Chicken coated perfectly, meat ( breast and wing) tender and moist. When we forked both the syrup soaked waffle and the chicken in a single bite it was some kinda heaven! Too stuffed for their legendary pecan pie...Next time!
I still love farmerbrown, but I have to admit it seems to have lost a bit of its pizzazz. While the presentation was absolutely stunning, the taste didn't come up to their old down-home goodness. Not that anything was bad, it is just their own high bar that was set early on. I do see improvement from about a year ago, but I hope the chef really digs in and spices up the flavors. The options are great and they have kept the comfort food vibe alive. This used to be one of my absolute favorite spots in town, and I know they can get back there.
The food was really good. However, as someone with a southern background, it is outrageous to see anything with grits being sold for $23. Grits are supposed to be an affordable good. So this place is good for a treat but it is definitely expensive for many of the dishes.
Their fried chicken is still one of my favorites in the city. Add tasty cocktails and dim interior and you've got a good stop for a meal with friends that is a step up from your everyday joint. The prices are a bit high, but in SF whose aren't right now? They accommodated our small child and his stroller without hesitation.
Relaxed homey southern feel. Unfortunately, we did not receive the warm southern welcome. The restaurant wasn’t necessarily full. We were one of three tables and there was one group at the bar. We waited at the hostess station for about 5 mins before grabbing our menu and seating ourselves. We eventually ended up leaving since no one greeted us. Which is unfortunate because I’ve eaten and enjoyed meals at their sister location.
The drinks were great. They seated is quickly took our orders for food right away. 50min later we were told the food was coming right out. We had a show to catch. I told her not to bother bring me the check for our drinks. The food on other tables looked great, I wish we would have had some. In the end give yourselves 2hrs from the time you sit to have 1 drink and food. Service need improvement
Farmer Brown used to be sooooooo good! Unfortunately, this will be my last visit. Mediocre food at best, slow service. They seemed severely understaffed and not once did the waiter check on our table. The bus boy had to take our check and bring forgotten items.
pretty terrible experience. went in on a saturday night with reservations at 7pm. We were served our food by 715 and out of the restaurant by 730. We wanted to have a leisurely dinner experience but they pushed us out. wait staff was annoyed when we weren't ready to decide if we wanted dessert. would not recommend this place to anyone. food was cold and did not taste good. it took longer to get our drinks than our food.
The food was yummy -- maybe the best fried chicken I have ever tasted, the atmosphere is funky and fun but it all seemed a little disorganized. Slow service (although friendly) and they were out of menu items early on a Saturday night. We'd recommend it and would go back.
Once you get past the marijuana smoke filling the front entrance the odor still lingers in restaurant. Our meal was going well until dessert- mind you this a Friday night the start is the weekend when our server tells us there is only one selection available from the five items on the menu. Who runs out of dessert on the start of the weekend. Needless to say we all left kind of frustrated due to this.
