The southern specialties extend into the drinks menu, where the front porch iced tea with flavors of bourbon, seasonal fruit, housemade ginger nectar, fresh brewed tea, served in a mason jar, is a refreshing drink to enjoy with your meal.
We were seated immediately but then waited 45 minutes for our food, and watched as a separate couple was served before us even though they came in 20 minutes after us!!
Amazing brunch! Love this place
Amazing service, and the food was absolutely delicious! Fried okra appetizer was to die for!
I wasn't super impressed with my experience, relative to how much we spent on dinner - first, our server said he was bringing complimentary corn muffins to the table. Then he came back and said sorry, they'd were out of muffins and left it at that. We weren't expecting anything free but it's weird to be offered something and then for it be denied without any real explanation or apology.
The food was decent but we got three out of four meals at the same time - and the fourth was delayed by about 15 mins. Our server was really nice about it and comped us some drinks but the late meal merely contributed to the uneven experience.
Nice food, very friendly service.
Server took a good 20 mins after we sat down to take our order. There wasn’t even a greeting from him. I also had to ask for another drink. Restaurant wasn’t as busy as they normally are. Besides the wait and lack of attention, everything was good and friendly.
Amazing food and drinks, great music, friendly staff.
nice food ... my kid had grate time there . thanks
I don't get this place. Last July, we had a rez here and when we arrived...on time...they told us we would have to wait for 20 - 30 minutes until they had a table. So we left because we would have been too rushed before the theater. Tonight, we had a rez and I arrived a bit early. The place was empty. There were going to be two of us and due to traffic, my plus one was running about ten minutes late. I asked to be seated while I waited and said I would order a drink. They would not seat me until we were both there. The place was empty. They said in case he did not show up, they wanted the table. I said he is showing up. They said I could sit at a table that was marked reserved by the bar that they did not need right away and get a drink there. I told them how I was treated the last time and still, no change. I sat for about 10 minutes and no one came by to offer me a drink....so I said strike two and I was out of there. There will be no third at bat...they are making it too hard for me to give them my business. I rarely post bad reviews...they earned this one.
Subpar, was expecting more
Food was disappointing, particularly given all of the great reviews I read. I had the Cobb Salad - fried chicken pieces were cold and soggy, lettuce was wilted and the cold soft boiled egg gelatinous. A major bummer given the price point.
Best jambalaya I’ve ever had!
We arrived early so had some time for cocktails before dinner. The Gimlet, Manhattan and Mojito were outstanding. For dinner we had the fried chicken (amazing) with sides of mac/cheese, grits and collard greens. All great. One of our party, a guy from Louisiana, had the shrimp étouffée and said it was good enough to be service at home.
Want to go back to order another dish
I’ve gone both on a Wednesday morning and a Sunday night now, and I’ve enjoyed the experience both times. Being a Southerner, I’m usually pretty skeptical of “Southern” places around here. I must say that farmerbrown has some of the best cheesy grits I’ve had, and their biscuits are great as well. The first time I went, the biscuits came with kumquat jam - surprisingly tasty! The standard chicken was okay the first time I went; we got to chat with Darnell, the awesome chef, on my second trip and he kicked up the seasoning for us which did improve the experience. We liked the Southern-vibe cocktails as well (I had their version of an old fashioned). It can get somewhat pricey, of course, but not any more than similar places in the city. The staff are attentive and super friendly, which does give farmerbrown an edge as far as enjoying your dining experience.
Excellent service and great fried chicken! The grits were also amazing.
The waiter is very attentive. I think his name was Matt. We asked for the dinner recommendation and we ordered his suggetions. Food came out quickly. The fried chicken and pulled pork sandwiches were delicious. The lemonade cocktail was strong and he provided us with extra sweetener.
Farmer Brown was awesome! We had the fried chicken and short ribs, which were amazing but my favorite was the crab & spinach dip appetizer :)
This place was fantastic! The wait was a little long, and the line of people bunched up at the front waiting for tables made it feel crowded. The food was delicious and beautiful. The cocktails were really cute and tasty too! Will come back when I am in SF again.
Food was overpriced, came out luke warm, portions were burnt. $20 for a salad that was slightly larger than a side salad? Not sure how this place has received so many good reviews because there was literally nothing good about it except when we finally got to leave. I would not recommend to anyone
Took a while for someone to come to our table but that's not the biggest deal. We got the okra/rockshrimp app which was good. We also went on a Monday and enjoyed the $5 pom margaritas which were also tasty. Gumbo and Jambalaya were good. Greens with hamhock were lacking flavor, and the biscuit was dry. Not a bad experience but not what we had hoped for.
So glad we found this great restaurant. Food was excellent. We were heading to the theater, our waiter anticipated this and asked what the curtain time was. Friendly staff. We will come back.
Birthday date
My wife and I wanted a nice dinner before a show at the Orpheum---I had catfish, cheddar grits and some of the best greens I 've ever had, short of the kind my mother made..Everything was great--my wife had the Fried chicken and it was crisp and juicy--Our server Matthew was very personable and conscientious--I will be coming back and recommending as well
Amazing date night. On accident
Great Valentines Day dinner. We have been to FB's a number of times over the years, often pre concert at The Warfield & with friends, & have never had a bad dining experience. All of their dishes are excellent & never disappoint. Do yourself a favor & visit soon. They often have live music, as they did Valentines Day eve for our most recent visit.
Birthday dinner
I was looking forward to eating here, since Sweet T's in Santa Rosa burned down in the Tubbs Fire. Very disappointed in the dishes. Little flavor.
Great service and food.
A great place with delicious food and a nice atmosphere once you are in the restaurant. Be prepared to pay for parking, because street parking in that part of San Francisco is not advisable
It was really enjoyable.
We had a lovely lunch. The chicken was wonderful- crispy on the outside and moist in the middle. It was not crowded in the middle of the week at noon.
They printed the wrong menu but it was fine because they honored Opentable menu.
Always a 'go to' place when we are downtown. Can't go wrong with their Southern Fried Chicken, grits, yams, biscuits & greens.
Not easy to find good 'soul' food in San Francisco and Farmer Brown nails it and never disappoints.
Great chicken & waffles!!
Went in and they didn't have our reservation for 8 people on New Years Eve. They made room! The food and drinks were fantastic and the service was exceptional. THANK YOU!
Had NYE dinner hear on Sunday night. We started with the fried okra/shrimp appetizer. Amazing. Okra cooked perfectly. Large shrimp. Perfect breading. Then moved on to Fried Chicken and Waffles. We added Maple syrup (passed on the sorghum syrup...) and it was fantastic. Chicken coated perfectly, meat ( breast and wing) tender and moist. When we forked both the syrup soaked waffle and the chicken in a single bite it was some kinda heaven! Too stuffed for their legendary pecan pie...Next time!
I still love farmerbrown, but I have to admit it seems to have lost a bit of its pizzazz. While the presentation was absolutely stunning, the taste didn't come up to their old down-home goodness. Not that anything was bad, it is just their own high bar that was set early on. I do see improvement from about a year ago, but I hope the chef really digs in and spices up the flavors. The options are great and they have kept the comfort food vibe alive. This used to be one of my absolute favorite spots in town, and I know they can get back there.
Great food...nice environment and great for socializing
If you are hoping to have good southern food this is definitely not the place. The service was friendly but the food was simply mediocre, very mediocre.
