Far Western Tavern
Our restaurant is recognized as a landmark of Santa Maria Style Barbecue, a renowned regional fare rooted in native ingredients and methods that were first popularized by 19th century rancheros.
Our menu blends this local barbecue style with other dishes that reflect our family’s heritage in the Santa Maria Valley’s Swiss-Italian ranching community, all prepared with fresh flavors from nearby farms, ranches and vineyards.

We had been to the Far Western numerous times when it was in Gualupe; first time to the new location. The ambiance was similar and the food and service were great. I recommend the rib eye.
Our server was wonderful. We let him recommend drinks and appetizer selections. He was right on the money! The special was tritip with yummy mashed potatoes. Grilled to perfection!
far western is a top notch restraunt to go to for a Sunday brunch or special occasion.
It has an upscale atmosphere and very good waitresses and waiters.
It is one of the best restaraunts in the area.
We had a wonderful night - our 37th anniversary. Delicious food and great service. Very special!
I was not impressed with the service. Had to ask for water, and then again had to ask for refill when empty. We were promised bread was coming, but it wasn't showing up and we were halfway through our meal before we had to flag down a waiter to remind him we wanted the bread. In the waiter's defense, he did give a drink free when we had to ask again for bread.
The food was great, the service not so much.
Celebrating a milestone birthday and was delighted with everything . Beautiful venue and the food was excellent . My prime rib was overcooked but I was presented with another that was perfect within just a few minutes . We used to go to the old location in Guadelupe 30 plus years ago. Same excellent food and service .
For 30 years it has been a family tradition to go when family came in from out of town. I am sorry to say that Far Western is not what it use to be. The last time we were there for a family gathering was 2014 and since that time it has really gone down. Service is not what it was and food is not what it was. For someone who was not use to the quality of Far Western when it was in Guadalupe, they would not know the difference. However our family started going there in the 1960's.
Sorry, no, I would not recommend Far Western Tavern any more.
Great food, drinks and service! Enjoyed every part of the dinning experience. We will be back!
The entire dining experience was less than satisfactory. The shrimp appetizer was warm and soft and the sweetbreads were unedible and returned. The steak was OK, the beans tasted like they were out of the can. The value was just not there. Would not return and would not recommend.
Our server Tammy was excellent. She always made sure we were taken care of, the timing on when everything came out was perfect. And she didn't hover. The food was excellent. The mac n cheese pasilla was wonderful. Our steaks were done to perfection. No worries about ordering the right level of done. Rare was just that. My husbands medium rare was spot on. Grilled veggies with my filet- yummy! And grilled Caesar salad was a treat. It not inexpensive but we went all out this time. I love the decor - it has a very warm feeling. We've had a Christmas party upstairs the past 2 years and it's always been great. Very inviting & friendly.
Awesome place, love the atmosphere. Both the food and service were fantastic.
We always enjoy the Far Western. Our only issue during this visit was that the service became non existent once the restaurant became full.
If you find yourself in Santa Maria for any reason, go to the Far Western for dinner. You will not be disappointed. The bar is beautiful and legendary, with lots of gleaming wood and copper. Pinot Noir on tap, for heaven's sake. Then on to the dining room. Your table will be set with white tablecloths and napkins and polished crystal, guarded by the steer and deer gazing down on you from the walls. Your menu will have many selections of steak and a few other things, so of course get the steak. It's local and delicious, presented in that most Santa Maria way with salsa and beans. You will sleep well, dreaming of the next time you can go to Santa Maria.
The food was very good, and the service was too. A fun restaurant with a lively ambiance. Fun for small gatherings, family, friends, and co-workers.
We made reservation on OpenTable for Mothers Day several days in advance. Party of 6 for 6:30. Arrived at 6:30 didn't get seated until 7:05. Dining room had 6 empty tables so not sure why took so long. Out of lamb and something else I can't recall. No merlot by the glass? Crazy! Not everyone loves pinot! Sirlon was perfection, very yummy. My pork ribs were the short stubby ones, not my favorite. Mom's ribs were the longer skinny ones that I prefer. Salted caramel ice cream divine. Server sweet & friendly but took long time to get check (still not very busy by7:45/8:00). Some old regular dude kept ringing the bell which was so annoying!!! Very loud!
Great experience overall. We went for mother's day and everyone liked the food that they ordered. I was pretty disappointed with the dinner salad I added to my meal for SEVEN DOLLARS. It was probably 5 pieces of lettuce, I asked for ranch on the side and it came on the salad (it was hardly enough) and it was just disappointing for the price, I expected a little more. The best part of the salad was the crunchy breadstick that came with it. If I ever go back I will NOT add a salad to my order.
Have always enjoyed Far Western steaks. The fabulous steak sandwiches are big enough to feed two. Atmosphere is casual and staff are very friendly and helpful.
Our order was taken promptly and food was delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive.
We have always loved this restaurant and the food has remained great at the new location as well. Yummy food, friendly staff, fun decor' - can't wait to go back there!
For a nicer restaurant, the service we received was awful! The whole meal took 2.5 hours... They couldn't find the bottle of wine we asked for we ended up waiting close to 30 minutes before we just said bring out anything, they forgot to bring out someone's salad. They got multiple dinners wrong... It's good food, but for the price it was very horrible service.
I have been going to the Far Western since the mid 60s. They haven't lost their touch.
Food was excellent. Had asked for a booth the day before with our reservation and were seated at a table for two which had little room for people to pass by so was bumped through dinner. Waiter was ok but I planed to order soup and he forgot to say what the days soup was and it slipped my mind. As I said dinner was good and one of the few steaks that was done perfect! Big disappointment was the "Open Table" menu was different then what was on the menu that night as a few things interested me and may have gone some where else if we had known. My come again if in the area.
I was at Far Western with my teenager. She got a sirloin ($25) and I got the tri-tip steak ($16). They were both GREAT, and I could barely taste the difference between them. The Tri-tip is a real bargain!
DO YOU LOVE A GREAT STEAK? HOW ABOUT ENJOYING ONE IN A COMFORTABLE, PERFECTLY DECORATED SETTING WITH ATTENTIVE WAIT STAFF. GET A BOOTH IF YOU CAN...THERE'S PILLOW IN THEM! YOU'LL NEED A NAP AFTER YOUR STEAK....WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE HOW BIG IT IS AND OH, SO PERFECTLY GRILLED. YUM!
It was my husbands 70th and we were visiting from SF Bay area - I wanted something a little different and Far Western Tavern was recommended! It was more than perfect - all of our meals more than met our expectation - everything was cooked to perfection. Our server was so accommodating - overall a very, very good experience. We will definitely go back.
Great food, excellent service ,great cocktails ,easy parking
I brought my girlfriend here for her birthday and we just happened upon Wine Wednesday. This is apparently a relatively new promotion, but getting 50% off our bottle of wine was a very nice surprise. The service was great, the food was even better, and Wednesdays are not their busiest night of the week so we had a nice quiet evening. Overall a great experience.
Had dinner at Far Western Tavern with my son who had been to the restaurant bar with a friend. I enjoyed the atmosphere (upscale steakhouse), food and service. Will return next time I'm visiting the kid.
We were celebrating our grandson's 21st birthday with a drink at the beautiful, historic Far Western Bar followed by dinner in the dining room. They treated him with a special birthday dessert and lots of happy birthday wishes. The food was better than ever. It is worth a trip to go to the Far Western Tavern.
The worst part about eating at the Far Western Tavern is deciding what to order. I went in thinking I would just get a steak, but then the duck special sounded so good I had to try it. I was so glad I did, but now I need to go back and eat my way through the rest of the menu.
The wine list, both bottles and by the glass, is equally difficult to make a choice on. So many good local wines!
The decor at the Far Western Tavern is fabulous. The attention to detail they went into with the leather chairs, copper top tables and western art on the walls isn't something you find at most steakhouses.
First, had to wait 8 minutes for someone to come to front desk to seat our party (5:30 Thursday night reservations) and party ahead of us. Thankfully, they gave us a quiet table per out request which was greatly appreciated. Service was haphazard and they seemed short-staffed. Maybe we were expecting more since family has been going to previous location for many years. Food was only okay and the salad prices on top of other high prices seemed excessive. It took 15 minutes to get one dessert order-ice cream. Only okay. Probably won't go back unless happen to be in the neighborhood which isn't often.
Beautiful new location, had lunch at the bar which was nice - it's the original bar from the Guadalupe location. Also had weekend brunch which was ok, the steak was overdone and not as flavorful as it could have been.
1st time visit since their new location.
Very pleased with their maintaining the restaurants style and ambiance.
We were seated at our table exactly at our reserved time, which rarely happens on a Saturday night.
We had a wonderful evening for our 34th Anniversary.
We look forward to returning in the near future.
The last time I was here was in the 1970s when it was located in Guadalupe. So glad to see the traditions have continued and the food, the restaurant itself, and the service are still beyond comparison.
We take our family there often because the food is excellent , the service is always very good and we can have a relaxing evening to visit without feeling rushed to leave as soon as we've finished our meal.
The food is excellent food, but the service was slow. We had a good twenty minutes to wait for water after our orders went in.
We never dined at the original location in Guadalupe which was there for MANY years and we had plenty of opportunity. One of the major driving forces to dine here was the 1000 point option but also the fact that we just had to do Far Western justice by finally having dinner there. The entire experience was great and perfectly timed. My husband loved his prime rib and I loved my chicken! We had plenty of leftovers for next day's lunch.
Brunch was great. I would go as far as to say that this is the best brunch I have had on the Central Coast, far and away.
Service was great.
You can tell there are professionals in the kitchen turning out great quality and great tasting food.
We stopped here on a drive up from LA to SLO. What a great find! The ambiance and food makes me wish that it was in my part of the state. We may find a reason to be back in this area just to stop in again for lunch!
Love the food. Please get more flying goat as we took last 2 bottles. Also wish you would bring salmon back to menu
