I first visited Fang maybe 7-8 years ago, when I considered it sort of the "upscale" cousin to House of Nan King, which I've enjoyed for well over 25 years. The food continues to be fantastic. Sadly, the service on my recent visit was not great; not rude or poor, just inattentive and sort of careless. For example, we had a 9pm reservation, and at about 9:45, they came by and put the chairs up on the table next to us, as if telling us it was time to leave. Also, as I looked around the restaurant, the once-fresh decor had deteriorated ever-so-slightly. It needs, if not a refresh, a deep clean.

Fortunately, the food (we had the sesame chicken and their signature short ribs, along with the Japanese pumpkin soup and the noodle pot with seafood), was amazing. Still among the best Chinese cooking I've had anywhere. Amazing flavors, textures, sauces/broths, etc. Really perfectly assembled.

The owner kept talking us into getting dishes different from what we wanted to order, by saying that you should get B instead of A. His suggested dishes didn't taste well at all and turned out to be expensive. He also misled us into ordering more than we could eat by not providing info on the size of dishes, but his expression gave it away that we ordered too much so I asked him to cut one dish and he explicitly told us he would stop our conversation there and ignored our request. In the end we couldn't finish a lot of the food and the two dishes he suggested were the ones we didn't touch much because they were bad...

This is the worst experience I have had at any restaurant. Please avoid this place if you don't want to be manipulated or waste your money.

I have lived in SF since the 90s and this was the worst food service experience I've ever had. we waited 20 minutes before a waiter came. he didn't write down our order and had to ask us to repeat the whole thing. we got charged for items we didn't order and items we ordered never came. they never picked up our menus so we had to put them on the floor when the food came to make room. they never asked us if we wanted a second drink so we just started opening beers that were in my backpack, and of course no one noticed. what a disaster. homemade noodles were quite good.

Fang always serves us well for team lunches with 15+ people...plenty of space, food is quite good (including vegetarian options), and they make ordering easy - just ask for help. There’s a full bar and the overall value is excellent too .

The owner/chef came by and asked if any of us had eaten there. We all said no and he grabbed our menus and said he would take care of us and promised we would like it. We were all very impressed! Every dish they brought us was so yummy! Cannot wait to go back! One of my new favorites now in SF!

Overall Fang is still a good restaurant if you know what to order or lucky enough to get a good server to recommend. Not all servers give good recommendations. Restaurant is under staffed for busy hours. A reasonable choice if attending the convention nearby.

For starters, my middling review was for this visit in particular. This was my fourth (and may be my last) visit to Fang's. The first three times I've gone were excellent. We were well taken care of (once with 4, once with 8, one with 18) on all those occasions and the food was great.

This time however.... all the food was WAY too salty and our server was the pits. She wasn't listening when we were asking questions while considering our order. Was unhelpful in making suggestions (in fact, the other three times the server - twice it was the owner - were quite pleased&helpful in making suggestions). She brought out white rice (which we had to remind her to do after she brought all the entrees) instead of the brown rice we had ordered. When clearing she was leaning over the table and pulling dirty dishes from the other side of the table right in front of my face and proceeded to stack all the dirty dishes right next to me.

It was so bad that we actually left less than 10% tip which is SUPER unusual for me (in fact, i can't remember the last time I did such a low rate). I'm not saying I won't go back but I certainly won't be the one that recommends it.

Feels like, this past Friday, they used the wait staff from House of Nanking... their sister restaurant. That place has a reputation for busy, low-touch service but you go in their expecting in (the good, when I've been, has been excellent though)

A bit disappointing, I think the restaurant has seen fresher days. The menus lacked care…and pages, the food was OK, but not exciting, in general, the restaurant just seemed a little tired.

In a town not known for great Chinese food, Fang was very good. Much better than anything in Chinatown. Never been to their sister restaurant, Nanking, however. Some dishes could use a bit more spice or flavor, but overall a decent effort. The place could use a refresh to decor/menus. Would return.

Great food- though, service is slow and sporadic. Definitely recommend, just "go with the flow" and don't be in a rush and you'll enjoy it more!
