Fang is the sister restaurant of wildly popular restaurant, House of Nanking. Fang embodies both modern and authentic Chinese cuisines in a fine dining setting serving traditional Chinese fare, dim sum, as well as "off the menu" innovative dishes for the adventurous. Chef Peter Fang believes that good-tasting food is universal and should not be bound by how dishes were made in the past. With Chef Peter’s trademark inventiveness and eye for quality, the menu evolves and changes based on seasonally fresh ingredients from the same local Chinatown markets Peter has visited for decades. For fresh seasonal Chinese food in an elegant and modern setting, visit Fang.

FANG Ratings and Reviews
As always, the food here is incredible. Some of the best Chinese food in San Francisco. We ordered a shrimp dish, short ribs, pea shoots, and mei fun - rice noodles the size of ramen. We also ordered rice. We received all of our dishes except for the rice, which we had to request *four* times before we received any. The food here is fantastic and the place is always busy, but the service started out less than stellar and has not improved since they first opened. If you have the time and patience to deal with the service, I recommend Fang. If poor service is a hot button for you, don't bother.
Enjoyed Fang's excellent food and service, until a major MSG headache hit after eating the (delicious) peas shoots; my friend felt it too. The server was not able to answer questions about MSG other than that yes, they used it in some things. Please use less or preferably no MSG, and let customers know so they can avoid MSG.
I was not surprised by the meal format because I read previous reviews. Otherwise I would be confused. The chef asked "do you trust me?" and we said we did. Then he proceeded to order our dinner. Dishes kept coming out until we said we were full. Each dish was something I wouldn't think to try and it was all very tasty. The raw bok choy in one dish and the cold pumpkin salad were interesting, not sure I would like that again. Our dinner was on a Wednesday night with Dreamforce happening a block away so the restaurant was pretty busy. I didn't feel rushed to finish and leave. For all the yummy dishes we got the price was reasonable. I would come try this place again.
I have gone to Fang and House of Nan King several times since childhood. I have grown to rely on the Chef's special because it allows me to try new dishes and the price is always reasonable. We went for mom's 69th birthday this time and for a table of 15 with 5 children. We were seated downstairs and it was really noisy as there were a few big parties.
The food was great as it always has been. The service was extremely lacking because of the language barrier and intrusiveness of the wait staff while we were dining. I can normally put up with that. However, at the end of the meal no one checked on us and it took almost 30 minutes to get us the bill. To my shock that bill was a whopper. When the waitress presented it to my she made sure to tell me that gratuity was not yet included.
I'm sorry but while the food was tasty it was certainly not worth that price in my book. When I averaged out the price for the number of people it was over $50 pp. there were five children who barely ate a spoonful.
I'm still scratching my head as to how it got to be so expensive since there isn't a breakdown of what I was charged.
We had a group of 15 colleagues that was comfortably accommodated in the dining room downstairs. I recommend going for the family style option as it's the easiest way to get enough food for a large group and allow people to sample multiple dishes. Everyone loved the food and it was quiet enough to have multiple conversations going at various ends of the table. Highly recommended for groups, especially for business lunches.
Fang was a very pleasant surprise. When the owner heard it was our first time there, he took away the menus and started sending over dishes of his own choice, which were all fantastic. I wish every restaurant owner would do that. It saved us 20 minutes of asking superfluous questions, and it rewarded us with superb-tasting dishes that we would never have thought of ordering on our own, like the Shanghai fava beans. We are definitely coming back, even though traffic is murder...
My wife and I had different takes. I thought the food was ok. My wife thought it better, but when pressed, it was because it was different. I agreed it was different (in a good way) but was still just ok. So I wouldn't not recommend, but with all the good food in sf, hard to recommend. Service was very good.
Our office has always enjoyed the Fangs dining experience. The owner makes it incredibly easy by making dish recommendations. We have never been disappointed by simply following his recommendations. As a group, we usually specify that we'd like a "fish", "beef" and "chicken" dish, and he places an order for us. It's easy, it's fun, and allows us to focus on the conversation.
Note: Make sure you always request the Fangs special crispy shortribs. They are mouth watering.
To be very fair this was a Saturday Night but the tables are very small, you are sitting almost at the table next to you. My husband and I were seated first in a group of about 6 couples. There seemed to be only one person taking food orders. All of the other couples were waited on first. Finally, we complained and were waited on. The waiter made some suggestions we agreed too. All of the tables got their food, each table had several courses in the meantime we sat there with nothing. Again we complained and proceed to receive all of the several courses squeezed on our tiny table at once. The good news is the food was great. The check was wrong when it was given to us the first time. Again another complaint.
We enjoyed our dinner at Fang, party of 2, 7:00 on a Friday night. The sesame chicken with sweet potatoes was enough for 2, and the noodle dish was excellent. Oddly, my entree arrived a good 10 minutes before my husband's entree. As the restaurant got busier, it got too noisy for quiet conversation. But overall, it was satisfying.
