About FANG

Fang is the sister restaurant of wildly popular restaurant, House of Nanking. Fang embodies both modern and authentic Chinese cuisines in a fine dining setting serving traditional Chinese fare, dim sum, as well as "off the menu" innovative dishes for the adventurous. Chef Peter Fang believes that good-tasting food is universal and should not be bound by how dishes were made in the past. With Chef Peter’s trademark inventiveness and eye for quality, the menu evolves and changes based on seasonally fresh ingredients from the same local Chinatown markets Peter has visited for decades. For fresh seasonal Chinese food in an elegant and modern setting, visit Fang.

The food was amazing. Kathy Fang is an incredible chef. Everything we had was delicious and I look forward to going back.

Great food- though, service is slow and sporadic. Definitely recommend, just "go with the flow" and don't be in a rush and you'll enjoy it more!

Above average Chinese food.
Reasonable prices for generous portions.
If not for the very poor service this would score high.
Not a feel good experience

Excellent experience. Mr. Fang himself ordered for us. The dishes were outstanding with unique use of customary Asian ingredients. The vegetables were very fresh. The tastes were amazing. Thank you Mr. Fang!

We had a nice meal for 6. The food was delicious and the owner selected a few dishes for us that were very tasty. Food arrived quickly however the waitstaff was not very attentive. Had to ask for water a few times and they never asked us if we were ok or needed more drinks.

The service was not very friendly and the restaurant was not very clean at all. We were sat near the kitchen where it was really hot, which was not ideal at all. They need a better ventilation system in there, you smell like food when you leave and for the rest of the day. The food was really good though.

Friend’s entree did not arrive, and we waited about 10 minutes, until someone checked. When it did arrive, it was not chicken breast (as per menu) but dark meat. Fang did not charge her, but she left hungry. My entree was OK, not bad— kind of fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce. But possible there are better things on menu.

We had chefs choice. He catered towards our taste preferences - eg. No spice. We had the fish stew (which is the restaurant special), pea sprouts, and a pork dish. Overall great service but avoid getting the tea, it is 4 dollars per cup which is a lot for a Chinese restaurant. I did get a bit of a small stomach the next day though, it might have been the milk used in the fish stew.

Disappointing meal. Invited a friend who is a vegetarian, and just started to eat seafood. Usually the owner sets a good selection for us, but not this time. The tofu dumpling got replaced with zucchini dumpling which was okay. There was no vegetarian dish at all, instead two fish dishes. Half fried fish with curry, not that great and expensive ($27) and filet fish with fresh spinach in hot oil was okay($18). Chicken with yellow bell pepper came has way too much cumin ($18) and not a good combination. The beef and baby bok choy is still very good. Next time we will order from the menu. Also, Chinese flower tea usually come in a pot. It came by the glass, too strong and expensive.

I love eating here. Mr. Fang himself will design your entire meal once you tell him your dietary restrictions. The remainder of the waitstaff are okay but slow movers. The food is incredible. The Honey Apple Prawns and Chili Shortrib are amazing

The service seemed completely un-interested in our presence, which was in contrast to other reviews I had read indicating that they applied a personal touch to ordering. We ordered some appetizers, and had to flag someone down after quite a long time to order drinks and entrees. I was only able to place one drink order, since they didn't come back for over 30 minutes after we ordered mains. I might have ordered more wine, but I guess they're not super concerned with margin? It was a confusing experience overall - I'd read good reviews, I had understood the place to be more upscale than it was in the live experience (maybe the neighborhood? or the branding?) and I grew up going to House of Nanking which was always excellent and vibrant and it seems they're somehow related. But, the overall experience was mediocre and sort of disappointing. All the food we ordered was oddly sweet, except the hot & sour soup. Even the xiao long bao was too sweet; not a dish I expected that from.

We had two vegetarians in our group. When placing the order (pretty sure it was the owner who took our order), he asked if we had any vegetarians as he could tell by some of what we were ordering and how we were ordering. Since he could tell we weren't sure about what we were ordering (our first time here based on recommendation of a colleague), he said, "let me take care of you." So he decided a couple of our dishes for us and boy are we glad. He did an awesome job. I'm not vegetarian, and I loved the vegetarian dishes we had (we got a couple with meat for us carnivores). Really good, tasty food. Service was mostly good. Had to ask for more hot water for our tea (more than once as waitress forgot), but really, overall, it was very, very good. Definitely coming back.

The food here is wonderful. My friend and I ordered hit and sour soup, spare ribs, and fried calamari. These dishes can be boring, but not at Fang. Each dish was prepared in a different and delicious way. All I can say is Yum!

Food: colorful, cooked well, but seasoning mainly MSG. No depth to flavoring.
Service: rushed, inattentive. Took 5 asks to get a bowl of plain rice. Wverything brought at once except rice, then salad after. Staff in a hurry up mode, rushing to clear table and hovering unpleasantly.
Ambience: so noosy it made my head hurt.
Overall I would not eat there again!!!

This was our first time at Fang. I believe the problem with our experience was that we didn't order well. The short ribs were delicious and perfectly prepared! The hot and sour soup was mediocre, at best. The pot stickers we ordered because the menu said they were served with Fang's signature Sweet Chili Mustard Sauce -- the sauce tasted like prepared yellow mustard PERIOD.

We will probably go back because the short ribs were delicious, some of the food at nearby tables looked quite good, and many other reviews on YELP were favorable. So we're going to chalk this up to poor choices on our part.

Our first time there, we were a table of 8. The owner chef Mr Fang came to our table and asked if it was our first time. He then asked if there were any dietary restrictions. We had a couple of vegetarians in our group. He asked us to let him order for us like a chefs “omakase”. OMG! We had 9 delicious dishes not found on the menu. From the fava beans, pea shoots, portabello mushrooms and vegetarian potstickers for the vegetarians to the regular potstickers, deep fried pork belly, honey apple shrimp, rock cod, housemate noodles with clams, every dish was unique and wonderful. This is an innovative restaurant neither Cantonese nor mandarin in style but a delightful can’t miss SF experience.

Best Chinese food in town -- special attention to ingredients and fascinating recipes created by Mr. Peter Fang, who was already famous for his House of Nanking tiny place in Chinatown. If you want, Mr. Fang will create a combination of dishes for you after you have told him the kinds of things you like. Always special!

As always, the food here is incredible. Some of the best Chinese food in San Francisco. We ordered a shrimp dish, short ribs, pea shoots, and mei fun - rice noodles the size of ramen. We also ordered rice. We received all of our dishes except for the rice, which we had to request *four* times before we received any. The food here is fantastic and the place is always busy, but the service started out less than stellar and has not improved since they first opened. If you have the time and patience to deal with the service, I recommend Fang. If poor service is a hot button for you, don't bother.

Enjoyed Fang's excellent food and service, until a major MSG headache hit after eating the (delicious) peas shoots; my friend felt it too. The server was not able to answer questions about MSG other than that yes, they used it in some things. Please use less or preferably no MSG, and let customers know so they can avoid MSG.
