Family Meal Ratings and Reviews
Very good. We had the fried potatoes (French fries) as an appetizer. The sauces were delicious. Everyone was getting the potatoes. The fried chicken was good. The meatloaf was good. The ambiance normally would not be that good but the snow falling outside the huge windows was a really cool scene. The service was the best part. Attentive, quick, in rhythm. A good experience. $19 for meatloaf... a little pricey. We recommend going here. Next time, it’s the double burger for me.
I keep going back hoping it will be good but they always seem to disappoint. I really think it's time for me to just give up. This particular day, it literally felt like we were eating cafeteria food. The chicken salad was so bland. I'm not sure consistency exists here because things never taste the same. They did a play on a fast food burger that made the fast food burger look more appealing. The water was warm and just... gross. Once I asked for chicken on my kale salad and they served me a kale salad with a whole breast, bones and all, on top. Another time I went to sit at the bar when they asked me if I could wait at the front because they had reserved the bar for someone else... but agreed when I said I thought it was first come, first serve. I left that night, and should have never returned. The service has never been good. I mean, I literally do not know where they find their employees. I love Volt, so I just don't understand how Family Meal is just so, so sad.
Lunch was fabulous as always. My friend visiting had the chicken and I had the shrimp and grits and we shared. The chicken was hot and fresh. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. Hubby had the burger, juicy and delicious as always. Oh—-plus we ordered the duck fat fries for her to try. They were hot and crispy and come with yummy dipping sauces.
I had a great meal, and the prices are a good value. The fried chicken is probably one of the best I have ever eaten. The hostess was awesome, a part of our party was late for our reservation, but she seated us anyway. The other "hit" were the chicken pot pie fritters...AMAZING! I was not impressed with the duck fat fries, I honestly can't understand why so many reviewers raved about them. I think the fries at Five Guys are 10x better. The other miss were the deviled eggs, not very flavorful at all. I will absolutely go again when in the Frederick area.
We arrived to find the store Super busy as it seems to be like most good restaurants on Saturday nights - we were seated About Thirty Minutes late on our reservation of 715. The store did offer a round of complimentary drinks as a gesture of apology which we appreciated but they took 15 minutes to get.
Our Waitress was overwhelmed and service was very slow and our table was left unattended for long period time - although she was nice and did seem to try. But for a $300 dinner I expect decent service even if on a busy Saturday night.
Not enough supervision was evident of the servers in my opinion. One of four entree’s was woefully late to the table while the other three were finishing. We finished our bottle of wine and the server never noticed or cared to check.
I’ve Been eating at Family Meal for years, and I’m sure we will go back at some point - just a bad night I guess.
Have been there before but invited two new friends who loved the place and the food. The only negative and maybe it's a misunderstanding on my part, of the people who serve you coffee and water but then after waiting a longer time then I was used to for someone to take our order, another person showed up to take it.
Normally a really good spot, particularly for breakfast. Brought some out of town guests and had multiple issues.
1. Not busy at all, servers walked past our table for 15 minutes before acknowledging our existence. 2/3rds of the tables were empty for reference.
2. Espresso machine broken... no big deal... but coffee refills were cold. Why serve cold coffee? Be better.
3. Server seemed ill-equipped to do the job. Confused about basic menu items, difficulty pouring water without spilling everywhere, etc.
As someone who has been to this location a dozen or more times, I was extremely disappointed. I guess I expect more. The food was at least fairly decent, of not hastily prepared
We love Family Meal it is one if our favorite places to dine. This was not our best experience. The corned beef in the Reuben sandwich was tough and dried out and the biscuits that accompanied the chicken dinner were over baked and hard..... We were disappointed but that will not keep us from returning....we understand everyone has off days!
I love the menu and vibe of this restaurant. The fried chicken dish is my favorite. However, this meal was different from others in the past. The chicken skin was dry and not as flavorful as I remember. The biscuits were bland and I missed the little cup of pickled veggies. The two pickle chips were sad compared to the little cup of yummy I have had at past visits. The deviled eggs and pot pie fritters were delicious! Our server was attentive and timely. I still love Family Meal and will go back.
First time here. The menu is rather limited and wants to highlight comfort foods. Not sure it achieves that. I ordered the burger. It was cooked just right between MR and M. The fries were crispy and well portioned. But it seems that what was once limited to NYC prices for burgers has now become accepted wherever I go around the country. Fifteen dollars for a burger and fries is the going rate minimum. Granted, the grass-fed, organic, cage-free beef is nice. The taste is always noticeable and appreciated. But is that cost sustainable? Especially in a place like this that passes itself off as a family restaurant offering comfort food, $15 burgers will set you back fast along with most other menu items at or above that price. Mind you, this is not a rant just against Family Meal. But specifically, for those kinds of prices, I'd like my atmosphere at bit more than diamond-plate steel siding and concrete floors. The open bar and kitchen don't offset these, nor do the heavy wood tables that look like they were cut from old bowling alleys. The décor mash just doesn't work.
The place was not busy and service started out rather slowly. But once the order was placed, attention was appropriate.
Probably won't be back. I suspect this is Chef Voltaggio's proving ground. He owns a number of other restaurants in town, all quite expensive. I'll probably wait until Restaurant Week to try another one at a somewhat more reasonable price.
Best fried chicken I've ever had, great atmosphere and really enjoyed ourselves. Service seemed slow, but the restaurant was very busy and I did like not being rushed once I was finished with food. I stayed for 3 hours with no pressure to leave so they can have an open table. I will definitely be back
We swung by Family Meal for a quick lunch on a roadtrip and it was super tasty. The atmosphere is a little cold and sterile, but the cuisine is comfort-food with creative flair and it is delicious. We got the chicken pot pie fritters, the pimento cheese hoecakes, the fried chicken and biscuits, a kale caesar salad, and carrot ginger soup - all of it was tasty. The mulled wine was also delicious. We are happy we stopped at Family Meal and would consider popping by again.
Food was very good. The atmosphere is average as the restaurant is located in a former car dealership I think. Plenty of parking available. We dined on New Years Eve and the restaurant was festive with decorative lighting and lots of people enjoying their meals.
