Family Meal Ratings and Reviews
What a great place for comfort food. Really warm and inviting, some families with great kids, a few small groups - like a neighborhood place should be. Spicy chicken sandwich and the house-cured pastrami were excellent! A latte to finish and everything was perfect.
Unfortunately, Family Meal did not live up to the hype. We expected so much more from a Voltaggio. The service was lethargic, the food only alright and the ambiance was boring. Could you throw some pictures on the wall? And despite the dining room being half empty, the hostess was sure to tell us that she would typically not seat us without a reservation made at least 2 hours ahead of time (ours was made about 30 minutes before seating). For a restaurant that looks to be in an old car dealership, with poor signage and overall only OK everything, the staff was quite pretentious. We have been fans of the owner for years, even meeting him at several events. We were so disappointed in our experience. Two quick improvements: sweep the floors and watch how you salt the food!
I wanted to like Family Meal so much more than I did. My husband and I had an early dinner just when the dinner menu was available at 4:00p. We got off to a good start with some interesting and tasty cocktails (our favorites were Chaild’s Play and Greyjoy). We shared the chicken pot pie fritters which are a great idea in theory but didn’t quite live up to our expectations based on other reviews. Our entrees were good but nothing really special (meatloaf and chopped salad with a salmon add on). The Tiramisu dessert was good, but again, nothing really memorable. Our purpose for driving to Frederick was specifically to try this restaurant but, for us, it didn’t live up to the hype.
Restaurant is in an old car dealership, it is not super fancy nor is it low end, its a good family restaurant with comfort food with a little twists and good quality. Our server was friendly and helpful, its about 40 minutes from our house and I would definitely make the drive again to go back, however it was very busy so i was glad that I made a reservation. At the time of this review, the appetizers were on average between like $5-7 and the entrees were in the $14-20 price range. So the food was quite affordable. Some of the best onion rings I have ever had. All the other food was good as well.
Our server had a wonderful personality and made us laugh. We enjoyed our delicious breakfast. We ate a mushroom omelet with home fries, pancakes with apple compote, and a breakfast sandwich with grits. They were out of French toast which is my favorite breakfast item.
We were in town from Orlando, Florida and found this restaurant through the Frederick Visitors Guide in our hotel. We immediatly loved the ambiance and the atmosphere of the restaurant. The server made sure to ask if this was our first visit and make suggestion accordingly. The food was VERY very good and the portions were such that we shared an entreé and a side and had left-overs to take back to the hotel with us. The service was equally amazing as was the price. In fact we loved our dinner experience so much we returned the next afternoon for lunch.
The food was awesome from beginning to end. Our waiter was outstanding and attentive. We liked that the manager walked to each table to ask how we were doing. The booths were a tight fit for 4 and we are average size. Other than that, you will walk away with a very happy palette.
The worst waitress we have had at any restaurant ever. Seemed annoyed we were there. Would come by and ask "Is everything ok?" and then just keep walking before any response was given. We said "hello" when she approached the table, she asked "what do you need." We even asked if there was something wrong, and she just said "No" and continues ride service. This was my first experience at Family Meal and possibly my last. I do not pay to go out to eat to be felt we are inconveniencing the staff.
This was my 2nd visit to Family Meal and I had been mad at myself for not trying the fried chicken on my first visit since half of our table the first time tried it and totally raved about it. I was so disappointed. It had absolutely no flavor and I ended up taking most of it home. On a side note - my husband, who had tried it the first time, ate some of my leftovers and agreed that it was awful. He said that it was nothing like the meal he had when we went the first time so maybe it was just an off night.
Food was just so so, heard such good reviews of the restaurant was disappointed in the over all quality of the food, not very creative or unique in any way. took about 45 minutes to get an appetizer after asking the waiter twice as to the long wait was told its on its way. waited another 20 minutes for entree's after telling the waiter to cancelle the order if not ready to serve us. my real issue was that every table around us whom arrived after us was served before us,and the restaurant was not very busy. Really disappointed dinning experience.
Great atmosphere, love the design of the place, great food. Waitress wasn't very friendly, didn't refill water or coffee or ask if we wanted a second cocktail. Had to flag her down to get basic service. Food, drinks, and atmosphere definitely made up for her poor service though, so we will return.
Overall great place with interesting food and fabulous drinks! I would’ve given it five stars but our appetizer and one meal, while delicious were cold in the center. Lots of kids so we will come back during school hours or later next time but really good food and drinks!
When it comes to friend chicken, FAMILY MEAL never disappoints! Went there for lunch and we had the chicken, along with Pastrami and a Ham Sandwich. The food was delicious--I could eat this chicken nearly every day! Luke, our waiter, was gracious and charming--and very attentive. One of my favorite places to go for a great meal!
When Family Meal first opened my wife and I ate there several times. I remember it was always crowded and reservations were a must. Now that a few years have gone by, I enjoy it much more. Walk-ins are possible now and there is definitely a more calm vibe going on. The menu is great and beer/wine menu is good.
My wife and I were on our way to a “Casting Crowns” concert at the fairgrounds, so we stopped at this restaurant for dinner prior to the concert. The meals were well prepared and very tasty; the flavors were overwhelmingly good! The only downside to our experience was the delivery of lukewarm coffee, not just once, but twice, to our table. We highly recommend that you try this place, if we are ever in the area again (we live an hour away), we will definitely stop by again.
Overall a good dining experience. We were a party of two for lunch. We had reservations and we're promptly seated. Service throughout the meal was above average, the wait staff was knowledge and able to answer our questions in reference to the menu. We shared the hoecakes appetizer, five silver dollar pancakes topped with pimento cheese and shredded pickled carrots. Very different and very good. We both ordered sandwiches - chicken salad and a Reuben. Both were served with two pickle disks. Unfortunately the bottom slice of bread on the Reuben was very wet and not eaten by my guest , otherwise a great sandwich. The chicken salad was good but sort of plain, just shredded chicken, mayo, celery on toasted wheat with lettuce and tomato.
We discovered Family Meal on Yelp while looking for somewhere to stop on our way home from D.C. It had amazing reviews so we were excited to give it a try but I should've known from the moment we walked in the door that our experience was not going to be like everyone else's. The hostess was overwhelmed with greeting people, answering the phone, stuffing menus and seating people. It took her a few minutes to acknowledge that we were even standing there and ended up seating us in the restaurant when we asked for the patio.
Once we were seated our server asked us what we wanted to drink but never introduced herself or even asked if we had visited the restaurant before. She came back 10 minutes later with our coffee then took our lunch order. To be honest, she seemed more concerned with filling up with water bottles they use then she was with connecting with her tables and giving them a positive experience. We ended up waiting 45 minutes for our food and not only did our server NEVER come over to acknowledge the wait we never even saw a manager. Plus to top it off we didn't receive an apology for the wait. Instead we were given a plate of deviled eggs because "our food was taking longer than expected". When it did arrive the toast on my chicken salad sandwich was hard as rock and there were multiple bones in the actual chicken salad itself. Additionally, our server never checked back to see how everything was. She didn't return until I flagged her down to get the check so we could pay for the overpriced meal and finally leave after being there for two hours. If I'm ever in Frederick again I will make sure to steer clear of Family Meal and will be telling our family and friends to do the same.
I ordered the fried chicken which was amazing. I loved the side of pickles and hot sauce. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits which was fresh and so good. We also had a side of french fries and the spinach. Everything was excellent and we would highly recommend.
