Only thing missing a a spicy variant of that fried chicken. The food and service were excellent as always
When we first started eating at Family meal we were blown away by the Fried Chicken and Duck Fat Fries. We have never had better. But unfortunately, for the last couple of years, the chicken has been dry and less tasty. Nonetheless, we never gave up! And sure enough, this last Friday, the chicken was back! Unfortunately, NOW they are making their duck fat fries larger and as a result, they are cooking slower and absorbing far more grease. Not good... Please, return to your original recipe!
We always enjoy eating at Family Meal. Sometimes it gets a little loud, so I would not recommend for a quiet dinner. We like the energy - and bring our adult children who seem to like it as well. Unique food.
Very good food for the price. Loved the shrimp and grits!
Food was very good. Got the burger and fries. Would recommend this as a casual place to enjoy good food.
Food was pretty good, but our entire party got sick after the meal. I think it may have just been how super greasy and salty the food was. Will not be back.
A great restaurant for comfort food, turned up a notch, and amazing cocktails!
MaKenna was in training, but we never would’ve known besides her shadow Tommy. She did a wonderful job! Tommy was supervising and was hilarious!! Very good time and the food was great! We all had salads and shared 2 desserts. Tasted amazing!
Fried chicken was bland ... used dipping sauce from the fries. Best thing about the fries was the sauces.
Noisy so we sat outside.
My fried chicken was dry. My son ordered a shrip PoBox and got a shrimp and grits. I had to ask three times for a diet coke and was told each time "it will be right out.
Excellent as always. The food and service are excellent!
It was a great experience nice food That was freshly made and very open space
Been here several times and it’s always been great. This visit, service was really very disappointing - server came to the table only 3 times. Very slow. Server was nowhere to be seen. Restaurant was not busy at all. Hopefully ours was just a bad day.
Wonderful dining and kid friendly. I would definitely recommend the shrimp and grits. It’s great.
Food here is absolutely outstanding, you really blew it out of the park! That’s where it ends, though. It’s obvious this establishment was founded/is currently owned by chefs, with no front of house presence. No one in FOH appeared to be over the age of 25 and it showed. We arrived at 2:30 for our res and weren’t seated until 2:45. I saw our table was ready but they just couldn’t seat us yet, which is fine, but at least address it. The host just awkwardly stood there and didn’t say anything. Upon sitting down with our toddler who needed a high chair, which was noted in the reservation, we were seated in an area where everyone had to walk by us to get into the restaurant. I eventually got so frustrated with people saying excuse me and hitting my daughter over the back of the head that I just put her in my lap (I’m also 9 months pregnant) and moved the high chair. No one acknowledged it and our server was so unattentive that I never even got a chance to tell her. I also asked for some bread or fruit for my toddler because she as hungry, the waitress told me there wasn’t any. I said- not even some grapes, pineapple, strawberries, she said no. I saw a strawberry salad on the menu so I know that they had something. And I later saw awesome kids meals but was never offered that as an option.
Needless to say, I won’t be returning and wouldn’t recommend.
Family Meal was an outstanding value! The food, service and atmosphere were great. Defiantly recommend! Great food and service for an unbelievable price.
Always a treat to visit family meal. We stop in every time we visit a relative in town.
French onion soup was not hot or placed under broiler to brown cheese, wings had good flavor, burgers are moist and melt in your mouth, service is friendly and steady, great looking place but industrial vibe makes it loud
Everything was excellent! We were told they had just updated the fried chicken recipe and it was still delicious! Our only complaint is that the entree came out just moments after the appetizer, and then dessert took nearly ten minutes to come. But everything was delsicious and the service was great otherwise! Also, I would recommend the onion rings over the pot pie fritters, those were not what we were expecting.
Delicious goat cheese omelet! The rosemary potatoes were amazing! Great server! Wish they had fruit or a non-dairy dessert option. Definitely will be back soon! Wish we’d known about it sooner!
Service was the best part although the food was pretty good too. However, not as good as it was in previous visits. The menu was more limited, and most importantly for me, almost nothing for vegetarians.
Food was good. The table was not well wiped off and it was a table for four (we were just two) so they removed dishes for the extra two seats but left the place mats. If you have small children this would be a good place. There were a lot of little kids there eating grilled cheese sandwiches. I was going to get a burger, but they had a lot of extras on them, like egg. I got the meatloaf which was good, but not amazing. It was $18. The view was of a dollar store. Wish we had booked a place on the main street in Frederick, which was a lively and attractive area.
We realized we had missed breakfast, but were still able to order what we had in mind!
Tristan, our waiter, was fantastic. Dinner was excellent, including a delicious Thai salad. Will definitely come back.
As usual everything was very good and very pretty on the plate. Service was fast and prompt
We have been going to Family Meal for several years and always liked it very much, especially the fried chicken and duck fat fries. When we went this past Saturday, April 20, something seemed different, and we wondered whether the ownership had changed and/or the recipies had been altered. The fried chicken was definitely not up to par with our past visits. The crust was extremely hard and tough, and it was noticeable that the batter had been changed, and not for the better. The duck fat fries were cut different and thicker, and were more like the normal steak fries you get at the store with little of the duck fat taste. When we left we pretty much decided that it was no longer worth a drive from Bethesda to Frederick.
Usually excellent, however, on this visit the meatloaf was dense, bland and way too salty. The grid chicken was way over cooked and the old bay wings were underdone and bland. FM is still out go to place, however, our last visit was not a hit. The service was excellent as always, fast, friendly and efficient.
I am a big fan of Brian Voltaggio and have enjoyed many meals here. I love the subtlety in the flavors. This most recent time was a little less consistent than usual. The grits were way cheesier than I remembered but everything else was spot on. There was the slightest hint of what I picked up as basil in the chicken salad sandwich and the cod sandwich had subtle hints of both Old Bay and dill. The Cod was also perfectly cooked and very tender. One of these days, I'll remember to go later in the day and get an adult milkshake.
We all arrived early and were seated immediately. Our server was excellent. She gave us water and our drinks came quickly after ordering. The meal was good, the server came often to make sure we had everything we need. We all had simple fare, grilled cheese sandwiches and friend chicken. It was a big portion. We had a great experience.
Excellent meal they were incredibly accommodating of my indecisive 4 year old, which makes everything better. Thank you we will be back soon.
Family meal is a gem of a restaurant, wonderful takes on basic food but maintaining the basic prices. I live about 45 minutes away and I have been there 4 times now and the service is always consistently good. My only complaint is that the hardwood booths are miserably uncomfortable to the point that it detracts from my meal unless I sit on a coat or something, I would suggest that they get some form of padding in the booths. Overall the quality and prices are worth the sore posterior if you are in a booth, side note: the tables have padded chairs so I will request a table in future reservations.
One of our favorite go to places for Sunday breakfast!
Top-notch as always! Delicious food; prompt, attentive service; amazing cocktail menu.
I went with a group of friends, and am sorry to say that everyone (with the one exception of the person who ordered the fried chicken) was disappointed with their meal. The kitchen was open, and we watched the staff eating over food that was being prepared (yuck) , service was way too slow for the amount of customers being served. The risoto was awful. I'd rather see andouille sausage in the shrimp and grits (they use pork belly) and the chef seems rather fond of adding smoke flavor to just about everything.
We enjoyed the meal however we went specifically for the Shrimp and Grits but they had taken them off the menu. The website menu had them listed so we expected them to be available.
This happened at VOLT- Brian's other restaurant in Frederick as well. Listed on Brunch menu on web but got there and not on menu.
I called prior to going to Family Meal and was told if they're on the web they'd be on menu and all menus are current on web.
Last time I went to Family Meal the service was not good, I felt the staff had gotten a little too comfortable. This time the service was excellent, food great, love this place. Best milkshakes in town
Excellent as always
Staff is great. Food is great. We have dinner at Family Meal every Friday. We keep coming back because the entire experience is always wonderful and a great way for us to end our workweek and have a really nice date.
I always love coming here! Great food, atmosphere and service!
Food is just perfection.
