EVOO Ratings and Reviews
Fresh ingredients, locally sourced and artfully prepared. The Executive Chef, Peter, is an artist at blending complimentary flavors. The staff are all long term employees which says a lot for how they are treated and how they treat the guests. Great wines as well. We got a surprise desert to celebrate our anniversary. Coleen, wife of the Executive Chef, runs the back of the house and does so very well.
There are very few fine dining restaurants in Cambridge that can handle reservations for 10 people on a Friday night with as much grace and ease as Evoo. We shared a large room with another party of 10 and when that other party finished we had the room to ourselves. We could carry on conversations with everyone at the table. And the food was outstanding. My husband and I shared the tenderloin and the smoked salmon. The tenderloin was as mouth watering as you'd expect but, as far as I was concerned, I hated parting with any of the smoked salmon.
A great place, rediscovered! Shame on me - my wife and I last visited EVOO at it's former location, and they had moved 7 years ago. Really glad a school chum suggested it for our evening starting with business and then having spouses join to hang out. I arrived early and wasn't sure why the app forced me to select 15 min later than I wanted, since it was only lightly patronized at the beginning. Anyway, I started with a drink - Catcher in the Rye - which the waiter told me would be delicious. It was. It also packed a HUGE punch. Wine list was thoughtful; we went with an Argentine Malbec.
My chum ordered the Corncob Smoked Bluefish Fillet with Grilled Zucchini, Sweet Corn Risotto and Tomato – Basil Relish ($29) which completely disappeared from her plate. Maybe I wasn't looking when she licked it clean? Obviously a hit. My wife and I ordered the Chinese Box. While the initial presentation was whimsical, the contents, though tasty, felt a bit like hashed kitchen left-overs. It wasn't, of course, but once the initial presentation deconstructs, you are left with a plate with no distinguishable destinations. Sigh. That all said, the wine was a perfect pairing given the shrimp and Hoisin Braised Beef and Gingered Vegetable in "the box".
The atmosphere and waitstaff were warm and not overly attentive. To/from the bathroom, I noted lots of little cubbies and nooks for intimate parties or sitting at the bar. We were definitely long overdue in being EVOO patrons, and we mean to make up for lost time.
It was busy in Boston and we had a larger group. I used open table and this was one of the few places that could seat eight at our desired time. We lucked out! It is a farm to table concept with great options and delicious choices! Three of our party chose the prix fixe menu and enjoyed all three courses. The serve was friendly and helpful. I will return on our next visit to Boston!
Excellent overall...the asian shrimp box was great.
Table was a bit small/cozy for 4 people for a working dinner.
The only negative was the coffee; we asked for decaf espressos and they were awful...still working the bugs out from the new machine apparently. Beware...(but they did deduct them from the bill without fuss)
EVOO is my favorite restaurant.. The service is absolutely fabulous, friendly efficient and very accommodating. But the real reason I go (and always bring out of town guest) is because the food is amazing. Everything is local and so fresh. The meals are creative and delicious. Everyone I have brought there (some in the restaurant business) have raved about the food, service and atmosphere.
We came here to entertain a young out-of-town relative, and figured if we're going to take the time and trouble to drive into Cambridge, we're not going to do it for pub food. Well, Evoo is definitely not pub food. We shared the goat cheesecake as an appetizer and the flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Both were excellent. Separately, we had the kingfish, the chicken breast, and the poblano relleno, all of which were very good. The atmosphere was subdued (it was a Monday evening), although the outside seating looked quite lively. Bonus: validated parking at the Kendall garage.
EVOO is an excellent guide experience. Everything you want in a restaurant is there, service, ambience, attentive staff. First and foremost is the creativity of the menu. From old standbys like the Chinese box to goat-stuffed peppers, you couldn't ask for anything better. The appetizers, ours was gazpacho, are top-notch. This restaurant is a long history of consistency, the hardest thing to achieve in the world of dining in cookery. I can't recommend it enough. On a more personal note, I am in a wheelchair. The staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating me. That means a lot.
First time diners at EVOO. We asked for a quiet table to have a good conversation and we were accommodated very nicely. The service and food were excellent. EVOO has a great wine list as well. We were 3 guests and asked our waiter whether we could share our meals and all the staff accommodated us very kindly. We enjoyed a very pleasant evening and will be back again.
Had a great lunch at EVOO yesterday catching up with an old friend. Food was outstanding.
I had the bluefish and corn risotto and enjoyed every bite:) Service was a little inattentive - took a while to take our order and get our bill, and as we both had to rush off to meetings made the end of lunch a little more stressful. Perhaps just a polite inquiry into whether or not the table has a "hard" stop would be appreciated. Will definitely go back
Good neighborhood restaurant. Usually the ambience is pleasant, but on Wednesday nights a band plays just outside the restaurant windows. It's not clear whether the band is meant to attract customers or drive them away. Perhaps it depends on whether one likes the music. At any rate, we think the restaurant is a great addition to the neighborhood. But, if you have a choice, we would suggest skipping Wednesday.
Creative and tasty dishes, good wine list, and attentive service. This is a good place for everyday dining. We especially liked the fact that the menu lists food in three different portion sizes --small plates, medium, and large-- so we each were able to select what piqued our interest according to our level of hunger rather than being stuck with a load of food on a single dish. Really liked the lavender essence panna cotta.
Great food, the Chinese Box was amazing, highly recommend it! Cocktail menu was inventive and tasty. Desserts were delicious! The food alone would bring me back! Outdoor dining option was a plus. Service was just ok, friendly and polite, but lacking in personality.
The food was great, and our server was knowledgeable and helpful. The major drawback was that our dinner took FOREVER to happen. I don't know where the disconnect was, but it took three hours for our party of 11 to be served and finish all of the courses. An excessively long wait for the food was a big part of the issue. Otherwise, great place.
I think the last time we had been here was restaurant week a few years ago, for lunch. We were looking for something casual that wasn't ridiculously expensive and EVOO fit that. They have an open kitchen and you can really see them in action. The food was good... The burratina was excellent (unique to have with chimichuri) and the Chinese box was also very good and flavorful. The spaghetti was odd--the server had said it was leaving the menu soon, and I guess I see why. It really wasn't spaghetti because it was lo mein noodles, with peas and a weird gravy, and then a gloppy egg... It just didn't work. They did have a Prix fix option for $42, which does save you money (apps ~$14, entrees $25, dessert $10) so it would be worth coming back for that, with a haddock entree that seems to be very popular. The service was OK... Somewhat slow, but not the worst we've seen.
I have been frequenting EVOO for over a decade. It has moved during that timeframe, and is now situated in the super-hip Cambridge life sciences neighborhood. Many of the features that made EVOO attractive ten years ago continue to this day. The emphasis on FRESHNESS, and health ingredients comes through loud and clear. The restaurant atmosphere is welcoming, even if it appears somewhat impersonal (lots of business parties going on constantly!). The downside here is that after working a restaurant for over a decade, it's simply hard to drum up the passion that once existed when you were just getting started. The owners are still on premises.....so that's a good thing, but the menu seems like it remains largely the same most of the time. Not sure what to say.....but perhaps a creative "break" is needed by the owners to regenerate that passion, explore new food ideas, and simply bring the "fun" back into opening the doors every day? I would recommend EVOO....and will also be going back.
Very friendly staff who were helpful and not intrusive. It was also nice to feel welcomed and not pressured to order more than we were in the mood for (we had just one drink and main meal, and only coffee after. Some places can make diners feel like they aren't ordering enough but there was no problem at all here, which we really appreciate). Food was delicious, as were the cocktails. It's nice to have a changing menu with the seasons/ingredient availability.
