Evo Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Our evening would have been very lovely had it not been for really odd service from our waiter, Hamid. First he got irritated that - when we said we didn't want sparkling water,, it didn't mean we wanted bottled still water. Then it took forever to take our order and get some wine. He told my friend, when she was prepared to order a full bottle of wine, that she couldn't taste the wine first, even though it was also offered by the glass. She corrected him. Although we all ordered a number of small plates (which means a sort of constant flow of food), they arrived very unevenly. One of us sat with no food for QUITE a long time, while two of us had two plates each. After about 20 minutes, the other plates all appeared.
At the end of the meal, we apparently asked too much when we gave 3 credit cards to split the bill evenly 3 ways. He seemed irritated and overwhelmed.
To be fair/kind, it might have been Hamid's first few days of working as a waiter. But his attitude and abruptness very much impacted our evening. And that's too bad. The food was very good, and having had a pleasant lunch there before, we were surprised by this.
We attended the Chateau de Saint Cosme wine dinner. A fantastic value at $65, and poorly attended. Apparently there were many last minute cancelations. Everyone that cancelled and anyone not on the restaurants email list should be kicking themselves for not attending. The 4 course meal was fantastic with great wine pairings. For wine dinners, the chef is provided the wines in advance and takes geat care to create dishes that pair well. He is extremely creative and it is an opportunity to sample dishes not on Evo's regular menu. If you get notified of a wine dinner, GO!
reason i rated service fair is because my friends and I wanted to get the happy hour red (because they had tried it before and liked it) but because we were not seated in the bar (even if we wanted to, there was no more room in the bar), the waiter said we couldn't order it, even if we wanted to pay a different price than the happy hour price. That is ridiculous... Disappointing.
As always, EVO does a great job. We enjoyed the Cakebread winery pairing event. The food was delicious: small, just-right portions paired perfectly with the wines. We especially liked that this menu featured courses that even a non-adventurous companion could enjoy. Of course, the wines were a real treat.
Waiter was a little rough around the edges. Food was average to good. Wine selection was good. Location is good for the neighborhood. Perhaps better to convert this establishment to a more neighborhood place than an upscale place. Just because you are in 22101 does it mean you have to have a more than regular menu price.
We've been there twice. The first time service was slow but still acceptable. The second time, there were only 3 groups of customers, but the only waitress let everyone wait for at least 20 minutes before even taking drink orders. Don't know what's going on there. However, the food was OK.
I took my military son here for Memorial Day dinner. The service was outstanding, really good wine list., the food was amazing and our server showed gratitude toward my son's service. The manager stopped by our table to make sure everything was nice. We both really enjoyed our dinner. We have a beautiful dinner memory that no one can take from us.
From the time we stepped out of our taxi to the moment we left, everything here was amazing. The staff were amazingly attentive and the food was gorgeous. The atmosphere felt warm and inviting. The Evo Bistro's cocktail is a must to begin your night. We enjoyed Crepe with crabmeat, Paella, lamb and halibut, all of which were done to perfection and with an imaginative twist. I like that. Thank you to everyone who made our night so special.
Lovely Mother's Day dinner. Choice of special Mothers Day menu which was excellent or tapas. Everyone devoured the food from appetizers to dessert. Loved the lava cake, the surf and turf was perfect. Nice filet that was perfectly cooked medium rare with a sweet succulent lobster tail. The lobster ravioli was good, the butternut squash ravioli was amazing.
The wine choices were great! The food was very good, as usual. We decided to do mezzes and share a few different plates. The artichoke was delicious as were the asparagus small plates. The empanadas were okay, but a tad too greasy for me. The service was excellent! Would definitely go back again!
There appeared to be a single server for the dining area where we were located. It was early in the evening however and the restaurant was not full. It wasn't that there wasn't enough staff, but it was unclear what they were doing. There was a separate room with a party of 8, and it appeared to be the focus of attention for several individuals including the owner and someone else in more of a managerial position. They weren't really paying attention to what was happening elsewhere in the restaurant.
We each ordered a glass of sparkling wine to begin--two different wines. When they arrived the waiter did not know which was which. That was the 'opener' to our experience there. Additional disappointments: Did not bring small plates for us to share the tapas. You would think this would be 'automatic' for this type of restaurant. Did not check back with us for ordering additional wines after our first glass of champagne. When we did order another glass of wine, it took so long to bring the two glasses of wine that we had already completed the meal by the time it arrived!! They were very fast at wisking the plates off the table.....just too fast. There was a dish with a sauce that we wanted to keep to use with bread---gone before we realized it.
The food was OK. We ordered a shrimp dish, and I understand this is small plates---but we were served 4 very small shrimp in a serving dish that made the shrimp appear to be 'microscopic'!! So disappointing in comparison to a previous experience I had.
It was embarrassing to see what was going on in the restaurant, and to have brought someone there for a special meal.
We did let the owner know on the way out that the restaurant did not meet our expectations and although was very polite....we certainly had the sense that this was modus operandi. In fact, I was concerned that our waiter was going to be 'blamed'---and really he was only a very small part of what was wrong with our experience.
Disappointed. Apparently I had read older reviews of the restaurant when it was doing really well and the food was wonderful. The restaurant has a tired appearance and the food was mediocre at best. Our waiter was over-worked but such a great guy. He kept coming back to make sure that everything was OK. Unfortunately because the food was very expensive and the environment and the food was fair, we won't be going back. I hope they get their act together, because they had a great menu, which is why I chose this restaurant.
Evo Bistro is a good restaurant that was rated as such because it seemed understaffed which led to slow service on our visit. The food was good family fare but not as 'great' as it had been in the past. Having only 'good' food at the relatively high prices made the experience not as nice as it once was. It seems to me that feeding two people for $100+ is pricey for a rating of only good.
We will likely go there again but not as frequently as we have.
I chose a french chardonnay that cost $11 and was told they were out of that wine but he would bring me one that I will like much better. It was a very oaky California chardonnay which was not what I was looking for. He did ask how I liked it and I told him my opinion. No accommodation was made and when I got the check, the "much better" wine was also $16. I found the service to be slow. I would also say that the average age was 50+. This used to be a hip place. Not sure what happened.
Arrived @ 5:30 on a Sunday and had the place to ourselves for a short while. Crowds started coming in @ 6:00 for a large wine tasting and an anniversary party. Service was good throughout, great food (although, even for tapas, the portions were on the small side), nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. I'll doubtless be back!
We brought out of town friends because we thought it would be a great place to be able to talk , have great food and beverages.... we were not disappointed! Our guests really enjoyed it. One small note, the 6-top table/booth seats and chairs up against the wall of the private room were really really worn and need repair or replacement. Otherwise, lovely evening all the way around.
Been here many times and loved it but service was awful and food not up to usual standards. Took them 3 hours to serve two people who ordered two appetizers, then one entree and another small dish. This is a wine bar but waiter couldn't answers any questions or make recommendation. Didn't check to see how food was (butternut sage ravioli was unseasoned, and sauce tasted like cream was just poured straight from the carton over it) Had to flag down other waiters to ask for spoons, salt and a second glass of wine. Water never did get refilled. Such a disappointment. I was bringing an out-of-town friend here because it used to be such a cool place. I was embarrassed by how rudely we were treated.
Wonderful hidden gem in a non-descript small shopping strip in an older part of McLean. My dining companions and I shared seven different tapas, and they were all superb! The ravioli and gnocchi were very flavorful - would love to have had an entire bowl of each. The molten chocolate cake was rich and delicious. All dishes were worth the calories - the highest praise this weight-conscious diner can give. Service was a little slow, but the restaurant was fairly busy.
