The Evening Star Cafe is a rollicking neighborhood gem located in the heart of Del Ray. Opened in 1997, Evening Star is well known for its friendly vibe and convivial setting and continues to shine with a fiercely loyal crowd. Led by Executive Chef Keith Cabot, we combine friendly, gracious service with a seasonal, American menu featuring produce grown on our rooftop garden and by local farmers throughout the region.

The Evening Star also offers a stunning array of nearly 1,500 wines, all of which are available next door at Planet Wine Shop. Our bars, The Majestic Lounge and the No. 9 Lounge, each offer a total of 20 craft draft and cask beers, plus plenty of room to gather with friends.

The Evening Star Cafe is a neighborhood favorite for special meals so it was a natural choice for Valentine's Day. We're pretty familiar with the current menu, so it was a treat to discover they had a special menu for the holiday. Since it was also Ash Wednesday, it was nice to have special fish options. Everything was delicious, the service attentive and the vibe as always fancy but comfortable.

A really special Valentine's Night meal. We made reservations only a day in advance, because we weren't sure about being able to go out early, and it was lucky that Evening Star had availability. Their Valentine's menu was also nice, with some special choices as well as being able to order from the regular menu, something that isn't always available on a busy night. We liked that there wasn't just a set menu for choosing, and it was a great meal. Both of us enjoyed our entrees, our bottle of wine (we got something different because they were out of what we originally ordered for wine, but they were nice about allowing us to taste their suggestion first) and we even retired to the back bar for extra drinks and Olympic viewing later. The one thing that probably could have been more smooth was the service to our table. It was busy, but nobody seemed to know who was serving us, and we didn't see our server much except to check in once and then bring the check, after her original greeting. We tipped well and chalked that up to Valentine's Day busy-ness, but there was plenty of help to go around when we arrived at a later hour, and it would have been nice to get checked on a bit more. Still, we'd go back in a heartbeat--wonderfully cooked meal, delicious salmon dip appetizer, one of the best things in the DC area that is made in a similar way--yummy, try it. We'll be back more often!

New experience in a great location. I would recommend adding some type of HVAC system to control the climate when the door opens. Overall, we enjoyed the Evening Star.

We went to this restaurant early because of an evening performance at the Kennedy Center. Service was efficient, friendly, attentive but not invasive. The food was delicious and better than anticipated and the wine was perfect that Miles let me try before committing to the whole glass. The portion size was perfect for both my husband and myself. It was early so it was pretty empty and quiet but I have been there when there are more people and the noise level is higher. Overall it was a nice date meal and a good set up for the concert.

My salad was good. The salmon dip was good too, but they gave us only 4 thin pieces of bread to go with a whole jar of dip, so had to bring more later. I find the prices to be too high for what is offered. I really like the location of this place and we had a very nice table by the bay window, but I would hesitate to go back to pay this much again. I am cheap though and always look for good food at affordable prices.

Went for Alexandria Restaurant Week and they offered a dynamite menu for the event. Great value. I had a wonderful beet salad, delicious duck confit and divine chocolate semifreddo for dessert. All for $35! Service was efficient and friendly. The host was a crackup - great guy. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were there for more than 2 hours and no one rushed us. I'll definitely be back.

We like to come here for special meals. The Evening Star manages to straddle the line between fancy and comfortable; the atmosphere is always inviting. The food is good, the service top-notch and the libations always engaging.

The food was delicious! It was a little noisy but not in an aggressive way - the noise was bustling energy from a lot of satisfied customers. It was restaurant week so they were offering three courses for $35. I had housemade stracciatella which was flavorful mozzarella stretched over a crunchy crostini with squash and pine nuts. My husband had pastrami swordfish. Both were a great starter portion and not too filling. We had salmon and beef as our entrees - both proteins cooked to perfection, although my husband felt his beef could have been seasoned more. For dessert, portion sizes were great! I had the chocolate semifreddo. I could barely stop myself from licking the plate - it was scrumptious. My husband had the vanilla cheesecake with fresh raspberries. The whole meal was extremely satisfying and well complimented with the cocktails and the bottle of Vino Nobile. (They have a wine store next to the restaurant and the corkage fee to open some of the wine purchased there is $10). Perfect date night! Would recommend and would visit again.

Very Good service and well prepared food. Because it was very cold out, no outdoor seating...which tends to make it a bit more crowded and noisy. Since it has the same owners as Planet Wine next door, the wine list is eclectic...and very reasonable....they seem to sell it at retail cost plus a few bucks extra for service. Not the usual double or triple markup. A very good value.

I enjoyed Evening Star quite a bit. We had two ‘snacks’ and a ‘plate’. We seriously liked the shrimp hush puppies, and the roasted carrots were tasty and surprising. Good service, nice ambience. Nothing really blew my mind, but it was a well put together dining experience.

Classy but cozy, felt like I was dining at a popular spot in a small town. Great locally sourced ingredients - would definitely go again.

The service was outstanding, but we were a little disappointed with the food. It should be noted that we went to the NYE $70/ person fixed-menu event, so the regular menu might be better. However we were disappointed to find that there were only cold appetizers available (on a 16 degree night). The other courses were only average, nothing stood out. And the portion sizes left me hungry after the meal was over (my date was satiated, but she weighs half of what i do). May give this restaurant another try on a more normal night, however NYE was underwhelming.

Evening Star Cafe is always inviting from the street, but also is always slightly dissapointing in some way. We only ordered entrees on our most recent visit and there were positive elements. However, most were mediocre at best - while overpriced.

For example, the biscuits that came with the over-salted chicken confit were nearly inedible. No amount of butter could save them. The green bean casserole that came with the dish was good, but slightly under seasoned. The beef stroganoff was "better than frozen." However, the person who ordered that dish proclaimed that it was diner fare at best - which doesn't justify $25.

The food at the Evening Star is always wonderful, but it was disappointing to learn that the fish were farmed, and not wild caught.
Also, the restaurant has no dairy-free options.

Took a friend who had never been there before. Food was tasteless this time, sadly. Waiter was terrific. It is difficult to have an intimate conversation because of the noise level though. Just some baffles would help! Hoping the bland food was just an 'off day'.

Love this place! Perfect when our-of-towners are visiting or for everyday dining. Salads and several of the starter plates are very big and are more than enough for a meal if you’re not a heavy eater. Bacon pimento burger is always hard to pass up, though!
