Evening Star Cafe
The Evening Star Cafe is a rollicking neighborhood gem located in the heart of Del Ray. Opened in 1997, Evening Star is well known for its friendly vibe and convivial setting and continues to shine with a fiercely loyal crowd. Led by Executive Chef Jonathan Till, we combine friendly, gracious service with a seasonal, American menu featuring produce grown on our rooftop garden and by local farmers throughout the region.
The Evening Star also offers a stunning array of nearly 1,500 wines, all of which are available next door at Planet Wine Shop. Our bars, The Majestic Lounge and the No. 9 Lounge, each offer a total of 20 craft draft and cask beers, plus plenty of room to gather with friends.

Burger was horrible. Covered in cheese sauce and butter. Way too rich.
Lovely meal - great food and service at a manageable price!
highly recommend their brunch! very cute spot. great service. i had a lovely time with my gals
awesome in every way!
Really nice service. Good food. BRING BACK THE SHRIMP AND GRITS!
We have tried to support this neighborhood restaurant during the past year. It was previously, consistently good, and we could count on this when we dined there regularly, and even brought family and friends. I do know that it is still a difficult time for restaurants, but there is really no excuse for the quality of dishes, such as wilted salad, when costs have not been lowered to reflect the lack of interest in providing service and quality food. We have had attentive runners who delivered food, but no one returned to check of our dinner.
I hope that efforts will be made to find a focus for this neighborhood restaurant.
We sat on the front porch. The greeter was awesome and super friendly and the ambience outside was great (except for a few cicadas) i love the system of ordering and paying through the app at your table. I was disappointed In the service I put conflicting information in the app for my order so instead of the waitress being willing to make it right it was an attitude of “too bad” you selected “no egg” and “scrambled”... so no egg for you! Also there were other elements of my dish that were listed but i did not receive. When I inquired about those items i was told there would be an extra charge. I was like .. just forget it. I was very disappointed in the lack of customer service.
Awesome music, drinks, food, and outside patios space
The ambience is great, but the food is meh. When you combine the okay service with the hefty price tag- it seriously isn’t worth it. Why is their food so damn expensive?? It seriously isn’t that great.
Fantastic service for such a busy night and the food was perfect! Highly recommend the fried cauliflower and the pork belly with clams
Food very salty. Very little wait staff interaction. Was told 10 minutes after being seated that it was last call to order food for brunch. Dining took nearly empty except for staff cleaning. Bathrooms absolutely dirty and gross.
Loved the ability to sit outside on a gorgeous day, mostly in the shade! Felt COVID safe with their distancing and protocols. The food was great and I appreciated the ability to get brunch a la carte (& the mimosas by the bottle of champagne!) It was a lovely experience.
Using the app was cumbersome. Staff was not available to help. I don’t mind the automatic 18% service charge but there was NO service. The few times we saw someone they were fine. It just took forever to track someone down. App makes it hard to order drinks and food in stages. We went with another couple. It really was a disappointing experience.
It was a nice evening with good drinks, but they need more vegan options on the menu.
Loved dining in the cabana on a beautiful day, especially with my dog in tow. We liked the concept of a contactless app to order service HOWEVER ONLY if it actually works. My mimosa and food came out at the same time and far before my companion’s order, but I know now to put in drink orders separately if I don’t want them at once. My companion never received her drink after they brought out the wrong drink (a bottle instead of a single glass was brought to the table), and after we both requested a server come to the table via the app which never happened. We also asked for a water refill which we also never received. By the time we were able to flag down an actual person, our 90 minute table limit was up and all that could be done was to refund the drink. I’m guessing staffing is down because of the new contactless ordering, but it seems additional staff is needed to support.
This was not the Evening Star I remember from before the pandemic. I understand many things have changed but this was most unusual. The host did acknowledge we had arrived by making snide comment to please not touch the reservations ipad. The ipad was sitting on the table facing the public and I simply pointed at it. I am not a child and had no intention of touching it. He disappeared and over 10 minutes passed when we saw him delivering drinks to a table in the back area of the outdoor seating. All the while I am seeing no other wait staff. Again he passed by, did acknowledge we were there but we were still not seated. Shortly after another man arrived and took us to our table. He explained that all ordering was via the app. On the app we found that we needed to push a button even if we wanted water refills. The menu was more like bar food than I had recalled from many visits over the many years Evening Star has been there. In the time we were at the table we saw no wait staff in the dining room at all. We did not stay for anymore of this experience. Had a great dinner across the street. Very sad to see Evening Star is not what it once was.
It was perfect! We were seated under a pergola draped in white canvas, looking at the other tables. Ordering was through the phone, no problem with splitting the bill or handling credit cards. Through the app you could ask for more water, extra silverware, just about everything. And they were super fast and responsive. Bravo!
Good and drinks were great as usual. The volume of outside music was a bit loud. Overall it was a good experience and we will be back.
Great Mother’s Day brunch!
Non-existent service! Everything is through the app. No one Checks on you; you have to seek service through the app. You even pay and tip before you get your meal. It is a ridiculous system. Will not be back until they change their format.
There was no indoor seating, which was fine, but the heater at our outdoor table did not work well and when we mentioned it to the staff they just told us that they ran out of gas.
The restaurant was not busy, but it still took an hour and twenty minutes to get our food. The food was very good, but the wait was not worth it.
great covid accomodations. yummy brunch. the BEST coffee
My sisters, mom and I had a lovely brunch on Saturday in one of the cabanas. It was our first time dining out since being vaccinated and it was an incredible treat. We had grapefruit mimosas and my sister had a bloody mary that we all tasted and thought was really good. The host and waitress were very friendly and we didn't wait long at all for our drinks or food. The only downside is that I wish there were a few more vegetarian options on the menu. I should have checked the menu before booking, but 3 of the 4 of us are vegetarian. What vegetarian option they had was delicious though, so it was no problem. Thank you for a wonderful meal out!
Great food. Only issue was that I had reserved a cabana and did not get one, and there were no heaters where we were seated.
The patio is lovely, food is great, and I love their online ordering system!
I love Evening Star Cafe, even though it's been a while since I've been. The food is great, as always. The service was meh... and we discussed with the manager at the end of our visit. She was lovely! Some of the other staff ... meh.
Was not apparent when we sat down that it was total touchless ordering with the QR code. As in, no one to take our drink order (must do via app), or appetizer order, or entree. We ended up ordering separately on our devices. Our apps came with my entree, and my friend received nothing for about seven minutes, while my entree was cooling off. And minimal check ins to make sure we didn't need anything additional. In order to summon a server or staff member, you must "order" through the app. And you pay when you order, including the tip. The whole thing was a bit offputting.
They believe that they will return to "regular" or near regular ordering soon. I really hope so. I like the restaurant, it's a local place, and I'm glad that it has survived for so long. But I probably won't return until I can talk to a server - with my mask on. :)
One of our favorites. We eat here a lot. We would like to see the new app ordering system incorporate a way to have the starters come out before the main course.
Fantastic COVID protocols with great outdoor space for distancing. Food just as good as prior to the pandemic. The online ordering system was easy and worked well.
Disappointed that the menu did not include more entrees (or any at all).
When we arrived, they could not locate our reservation. They seated us anyway, with a nice umbrella over the table. But, I think reservations are supposed to get a cute cabana, and they were all taken. Me and my group ordered separately on the app and our food came at very different times (mine a lot later than my colleagues’). My sandwich bread was burned and you could tell they turned the burt side to the interior so maybe I would not notice. I had a stomachache for an hour after eating but it went away. We did not have a server but I guess that’s what their app is for. It has a flight attendant type call button. The ambience on the back patio was very nice. The tater tots were deliciously crispy but very greasy, with the oil pooling in the bottom of the plate. The sandwiches come with fries, which was not clear from the menu, so I ended up wasting a lot of fries due to the tots. They let us relax and linger for a long time after finishing eating, which was nice. I did not particularly like drinking out of a plastic cup and that is a lot of unnecessary waste. If I’m ever looking for a casual lunch in Delray again I’ll end up going back because better the devil you know than the devil you don’t, but I think three stars is appropriate for the overall experience.
I really like the combination of Evening Star with the Front Porch. The tables are very well spaced out. It is mainly contactless ordering which is more efficient. The food and drinks came out VERY quickly which was fantastic. We were able to pick a nice shaded spot. Has a really friendly atmosphere and looked gardenesque. The food was delicious as well. Good portions for a decent price. Brunch is definitely the move on the weekends. I will definitely come back again!
Thank you for creating such a welcoming and safe space during this pandemic! So nice to dine at a restaurant again!
By far the best covid conscious experience of any restaurant. Love the ordering system and staff. Could use more things on the menu (food/drink), but what they do have is tasty.
We were there in between Brunch and dinner service. While we were warned that the brunch menu would not be available after 2:30, we were not told that they only offer 2 small apps in between services. We misunderstood, clearly, but as such, I passed on brunch thinking there would be traditional bar-type foods between services. Left hungry!
Air conditioner was very loud but everything else was terrific
Lovely set-up, wonderful for brunch on a sunny Sunday morning. Food is OK, but a little bland. The fried potatoes were too salty. Waiters very friendly, but the electronic contact request a little burdensome.
The service was crazy good. The entire staff was beyond great from ordering online at the table to the bottle of wine pours to bringing extra silverware automatically when extra guests arrived. Kudos to the staff!
Lovely patio dining, attentive service, and good food. Problem is that there is no prominent notice on this site or anywhere else that menu is limited to glorified bar food. The superb cuisine this place has been known for over the years is gone. I understand why and what is available (a hamburger, a pulled chicken sandwich, a grilled cheese sandwich, and steak frites) is good, it was just not what we were looking for. We will call ahead next time.
Hi Gary, Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughtful words. We really appreciate hearing constructive feedback like this - it helps us to improve our offerings. I've shared this with our culinary team and as we continue to develop our menu, we will take this into consideration. Thanks again and please say hello next time you're in! Best, Geoff
Fantastic outdoors seating, we had plenty of room and the ordering system was incredibly simple to use- plus we didn’t have to fight over who was paying the check because everyone could just pay their own. I hope they keep some of these systems post-pandemic. The menu is a bit stripped down but everything was really good! Would have loved some more vegetarian options - on our visit there wasn’t a vegetarian main course option. But lots of delicious appetizers.
Hi Heather! Thank you for your great feedback and kind words! We're definitely going to keep some type of this system, and have plans to even upgrade to an even more efficient system very soon. And noted on the vegetarian options - this type of feedback is very useful as we continuously adjust our menu! Thanks again and please say hello next time you're in - I'd love the opportunity to thank you in person! Best, Geoff
Great service, great food, easy, pleasant dining experience. COVID-19 protocols felt safe and comfortable and I managed to impress my date with restaurant choice.
Thank you! We really appreciate it!
