We had not dined at evening star in over two years owing to a poor meal. Tom sietsma from the Washington post gave the restaurant a favorable review in March. So we decided to try it again. We were not disappointed. Every dish we ordered was tasty and more than worth its cost.
Nice little cafe with local produce. Great wine list.
A great neighborhood gem with a varied menu, great cocktails, and attentive service. We loved the assortment of unusual salads that were delicious. Entrees were prepared as requested and were served with wonderful sides. We had a great evening and will return.
The wine was excellent, the food just okay, our server wasn't very knowledgeable about the menu and the noise level was so high it was almost painful. Normal conversation was not possible.
Food and service was excellent!! It’s a small but cozy place, so the noise level was a little high, but a great place for an evening out.
Wonderful food. Probably my favorite restaurant in the area.
Neighborhood look and feel are simply enhanced by the food and service. I was entertaining nine business clients from out of town, and three from my company including me, and had all eleven raving about the place that night and with emails the following day. That says it all!
We hadn’t been here for a few years and were so happy to return. The food, service and ambience were fantastic. Still love this place!
Apparently there was an event in the area that overwhelmed the restaurant - but nobody said anything or offered an explanation until the bill came. We waited an hour for our food with the waitress stopping by only once about 30 minutes in to drop off two small pieces of bread (we noticed other tables had butter or something served with the bread - we did not). Still no apology or explanation. Food finally arrived, no explanation or apology for the wait. We didn’t see the waitress again until we were almost done with our meal but still no apology or explanation. Finally when she dropped off the bill she casually thanked us for our patience and said she had taken our drinks off the bill. When she picked it up to run the cards was the very first time anyone apologized and explained what had gone wrong - and at that point it seemed more like an attempt to salvage a tip. Someone should have explained what was going on an hour or two before that...
So fun! Especially with the wine store deal next door.
It was far too loud for us to enjoy a conversation. Otherwise,
food and service were excellent.
Loud and slow. Interesting menu.
Great duck and risotto as it should be done (no cream)
Based on prior Evening Star Dining experiences the hamburger was quite poor. No beef flavor. It's as if someone just put ingredients together without considering how the combination would mesh. Or was it just sitting in a warming station waiting for the rest of the table's over to be prepared. Server never inquired how the meal was. Evening Star's nearby partner Rustico consistently makes a far superior hamburger.
As always, great food and service. A pleasure every time (and that is weekly).
Fabulous food and warm staff! Great place.
Thank you for the kind words!
As always the food was fine. O ur drink service was a little slow but otherwise welcoming. My only concern with ES is the noise level. We usually try to go there on off-peak times which helps spmewhat.
Food and service are always top notch!! Noise level is usually pretty loud.
My duck was superb. The farro and brussel sprout confit was wonderful. Compliments to the chef.
My husbands chickery chicken dish was only so so. Next time he sould try the pork dish wich looked great.
Fried Cauliflower and Beef Cheeks were excellent! We have been dining there for over 15 years. Doesn't disappoint.
Food was tasty but the service was very slow. We had to wait about 45 minutes for our dinners. Then, 2 of the 6 dinners were stone cold on arrival.
Management apologized and comped the 2 cold ones.
Still, we won't hurry back.
The food seemed a bit uneven to me, We started with 2 snacks but my nieces beef cheeks sauce was tasty but the pasta it self was limp & bland. My stuffed pasta Agnoltti was the star of the evening.
Had a late reservation 9:00. Had to wait half hour in bar and my specialty drink was flat. Once we were seated, our waiter was not happy; bad mood? Tired? Not sure but not very excited to see us. Never smiled. Food took forever. I loved my flatiron steak. Absolutely the best. Potatoes that came with it were delicious. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. We wanted to try apple crisp/tres leche dessert and asked waiter if it was big enough for 4 to sample. He said we should order 2. The dang thing was a HUGE! Not happy he misled us and we had to box most of it up. Think he was padding the bill. Husband says he won’t come back due to waiter and long wait. I’ll definitely be back but earlier. Hopefully get a different waiter.
Surprisingly poor choices for vegans. Chef said he was going to prepare something special specifically but then gave me something different that basically tasted like microwaved vegetables watery and bland. The promised risotto was not delivered but I ended up with a bowl of salty barley. I can order items without cheese easily enough - that would have been worlds better.
Fabulous food from a talented and dedicated farm-to-table chef.
Really enjoyed getting to pick our wine out at the store located next to/within the restaurant.
Atmosphere is very cozy and welcoming.
All the food was perfect. Really enjoyed the cabbage salad and the duck 2 ways.
Great service, amazing food. Slightly loud but lively. Dessert was slightly disappointing but the rest of dinner exceeded expectations. Great beer and wine list.
We had such a great time at Evening Star celebrating our friends' birthdays. Our server Ashley was wonderful. Highly recommend - fantastic little neighborhood gem.
Oysters were very gritty..Main dish was very good. Extremely loud and noisy!
The cafe is such a quiet little setting. It's perfect for a date night. The waiter was very helpful with his recommendations.
Food was other worldly. Chef Jonathan personally present three of his signature dishes. I have been dining at evening star for 6 years and the food is now at a whole another level under Chef Jonathan .
The food was scrumptious, from the appetizer through the dessert. Our waitress Sam was knowledgeable and warm.
The bar tender was excellent providing information about a great variety of beer. Price was great.
Will definitely return!
Great food! Love their menu and they keep it fresh with wonderful specials. Neighborhood favorite!
Each visit has a different menu since the chef works with seasonal items. The starter mushroom bruschetta was amazing. Did not care for the beef port jelly on the chicken pate. The pork chop and the beef cheeks and rolls were truly inspired. Not as jazzed with the apple crisp style dessert but it was interesting. Recommend a reservation even early evening on a weekday. Always something truly amazing coming out of the kitchen.
Delicious meal. Looking forward to going back for another tasty dinner.
We really enjoyed our dinner at the Evening Star Cafe. All of the food that we ordered was tasty, from the chicken fried oysters, garlic hummus and fried cauliflower that we had for appetizers to the salmon and sea bass that we had for entrees, and the service was great. We'll definitely return.
As always great, fresh, well-made food with friendly service.
Our first time at Evening Star, which we had heard about in very favorable terms. Comfortable booth seating; warm and effective service from Roberto; a good variety of fresh, creatively prepared plates of all sizes. Reasonably priced as well. We will return!
Great meal in cool place. Food was good but I'm a meat and potatoes guy and I passed on some things due to the sides being a bit eclectic for.my taste. But what I landed on (porkchop) was great. Service good and homey and not a bother. Ate there twice in one week ... very pleased. OH ....the bar/lounge was awesome. Our reservation was after 8pm so we hung out a bit ... fun.
