Evening Star Cafe
The Evening Star also offers a stunning array of nearly 1,500 wines, all of which are available next door at Planet Wine Shop. Our bars, The Majestic Lounge and the No. 9 Lounge, each offer a total of 20 craft draft and cask beers, plus plenty of room to gather with friends.
Great food! Love their menu and they keep it fresh with wonderful specials. Neighborhood favorite!
Each visit has a different menu since the chef works with seasonal items. The starter mushroom bruschetta was amazing. Did not care for the beef port jelly on the chicken pate. The pork chop and the beef cheeks and rolls were truly inspired. Not as jazzed with the apple crisp style dessert but it was interesting. Recommend a reservation even early evening on a weekday. Always something truly amazing coming out of the kitchen.
Delicious meal. Looking forward to going back for another tasty dinner.
As always great, fresh, well-made food with friendly service.
Our first time at Evening Star, which we had heard about in very favorable terms. Comfortable booth seating; warm and effective service from Roberto; a good variety of fresh, creatively prepared plates of all sizes. Reasonably priced as well. We will return!
Great meal in cool place. Food was good but I'm a meat and potatoes guy and I passed on some things due to the sides being a bit eclectic for.my taste. But what I landed on (porkchop) was great. Service good and homey and not a bother. Ate there twice in one week ... very pleased. OH ....the bar/lounge was awesome. Our reservation was after 8pm so we hung out a bit ... fun.
Best hummus in town
This place is amazing - everything about it! Salmon was incredible and the side that comes with the chicken is to die for!
Great new chef and menu- thrilled to have this gem so close!
Really good food, service, location, and setting. Nice relaxing evening. Give it a try.
Tasty cocktails, efficient service and delicious food. Restaurant Werk prices. Great value - we’ll be back!
No bread w/meal; wine as advertised on menu was not available; "extremely" slow service; & server failed to deliver salad ordered as a starter.
Terrific food. The "Duck 2 Ways" was an incredible dish with the portions of each part of the meal perfectly distributed.
The food was excellent, especially the seafood gumbo. Also the carrot cake, which was surprisingly light. Rather noisy. Good service.
Great little gem in a cute neighborhood of Alexandria. The food was amazing, and the servers were attentive but didn't hover. The decor was very whimsical as well, and a good conversation starter! We went for restaurant week and were thoroughly impressed - some other restaurants seem to cut corners during restaurant week, but everything was superb. I look forward to going back!
We went during restaurant week so can't vouch for pricing. I will say each course was presented well, enjoyed and the staff was super attentive.
Our server was extremely personable and attentive. There was a great deal of energy throughout the restaurant. My wife and I went for restaurant week and it was a spectacular deal. We were able to choose from any appetizer, entree, and desert. The food was very good. I had the fryed oysters and they were balanced between salt, fat, acid, and heat. The duck and risotto were good. The duck breast fat was well rendered and a crispy skin, but a tad past medium rare. I wish there was a pronounced sauce to give the dish more pop. There is a wonderful selection of beers to choose from. Overall, a very good meal and we will be back.
You can have a drink at the upstairs lounge bar and then have a nice dinner in the restaurant. The sea bass was delicious. The apple dessert as well.
Really enjoyed my meal here. The entrees are tasty and very good, but not overly complicated. The menu is a reasonable size - enough to provide for a good range of options, but not so many that you worry if they can do all of the menu items well. My only critique is that the only main course that was vegetarian on my night, at least, was quite heavy - lentils and squash with pita. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty, but on balance very heavy and some other veggies would have balanced it out more. Super cute vibe and a nice little bar to wait in before your reservation.
We very much enjoyed our recent dinner here during Restaurant Week: excellent food, solicitous service, and a generous Restaurant Week menu offering everything that was on the regular one. The experience has restored our faith in this restaurant which we previously thought had deteriorated over the years.
The food was wonderful (with generous portions), the service was terrific, and we had a great time. We particularly liked that Evening Star offered its whole menu for Restaurant Week. We'll definitely be back!
Our server was amazing!
Good catch up with friends. Server was great, food was excellent.
Just Terrible ... really!
So noisy we could not hear anything! The bruschetta was burned, and the chickpea fries were so bland they could have been glue. Brisket was just ok. Pasta and ragu was really nothing special. Could have made better at home. Desserts were horrible. Worst restaurant experience ever! Totally not worth it!!!
Good food and great service.
The Tres Leches cake was very dry (a Tres levies cake should be sopping) and when I said this to the manager, he took 10% off the total meal ticket. Evening Star truly cares about their clients and wants everyone to have an enjoyable experience.
We've eaten at this local favorite many times and always have a great meal. During restaurant week, it becomes a great value to boot!
The menu is limited. I had the gumbo which was Good and my husband had the pork chop which he liked. While our wait staff was personable and good, the meal was. not as good as I remember.
Great farm-to-table food.
Delicious. Had the hummus, beef cheek & pasta, duck two ways. The restaurant smelled like fresh bread when we arrived!
Great ambience, knowledgeable service.
Cozy eclectic neighborhood Restaurant. Salmon, duck, pork chop and flat iron steak dishes are delicious. Skip dessert - indispensable chocolate cake and tres leches apple crisp were disappointing.
Went on Jan 2 for hubby's birthday. It was very quiet (post-New Year festivities and a Wednesday) but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our server, Jenna, was outstanding. Our meal was amazing and we cannot wait to return - maybe as sion as Restaurant Week. Bravo Evening Star!
Great neighborhood restaurant with a bar in the back and connected to a wine shop with a great inventory! Really enjoyed the New Year's Eve tasting menu! The manager was very helpful getting us into the wine shop which had closed and leading us to the great selection of Moscato wines...
Evening Star is a local gem for us, but it has become increasingly hit or miss. Parisian gnocchi & chicken fried oysters were the winners tonight, though.
First time at Evening Star Cafe and I really enjoyed it. The cocktails are awesome and the food was excellent. Service was also very good. My only gripe was the fried cauliflower starter. I did not get the sense from the description nor when our server described it that it would be spicy but boy did it feel like I could blow fire when I tasted it. I like spicy food but it was too spicy to enjoy. Other than that, I had a wonderful time here and will definitely be back.
Great spot. My girlfriend and I were able to have a great conversation with even better food. The drinks are fun and the appetizers amazing. Our waitress was so sweet and accommodating.
it was an excellent dining experience. My son lives in del Ray and knows one of the chefs and recommended your restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised. We will return.
Had a great meal and memorable evening. Very nice to meet the chef personally. Our server was attentive, friendly, great service.
My husband and I have had an on-again, off-again relationship with this neighborhood restaurant. It is definitely on again with the new chef. We had entrees, salads, and apps and will be back to try the rest of the menu soon. Chicken liver mousse and mushroom bruscetta were SO good. Love the new menu, love the new chef.
