Classic bistro items such as raw oysters, croque madame, smoked salmon, and steak frites--each of them in the most flavorful form you've ever seen or tasted. Daily specials like shrimp etouffee, gumbo ya-ya, and fried chicken offer glimpses into the Chef's French and Creole repertoire.
An extensive array of wines by the glass is anchored by our draft wine system, which serves perfect pours on exclusive wines seldom offered except by the bottle. Our local beers and liquors will get your toe tapping at the comfortable, chic bar.
The jewel of Evangeline is the trellised outdoor patio, with heaters and fans for outdoor dining in all but the most forbidding weather. Dappled sunlight and lively music make it a Napa Valley idyll worth the drive up-valley. Free parking abounds across the street.
Our server Rachel was terrific and charming.
Our chef Sasan made the most incredible burgers and fries! We are regulars for a reason!
The restaurant has a lovely French ambience. We arrived a little early for our 5:15 pm reservations. We were the first people there when they opened at 5 pm. We checked in with the hostess who took us to a table in a covered patio with plastic tent sides around it. Remember the entire restaurant was empty. It was raining, wind blowing and about 43 degrees out. I asked to sit inside and the hostess said the outdoor tent was heated. I said ok, can we sit inside. She huffed a little and took us to a table inside. Granted there were only about 10 interior tables plus a bar but...no one else was there! As we ate other diners came in. Many she tried to seat outside, but everyone asked to sit inside. By the time we finished our meal and left there were still a few seats left inside. I understand needing to seat people outside to accommodate a crowd, but there was enough room for everyone, and really who wants to eat outside in that weather. I had the roast chicken which was delicious but a bit tough and my husband had the burger which he enjoyed. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly and I thought the prices were reasonable. My recommendation would be to maybe only eat here if the weather was nice and you would enjoy sitting outside to dine.
The Gumbo Ya Ya was great, hearty, if a little salty. Their food options are very limited though, and my girlfriend ended up getting the appetizer clams since the main menu itself had about 6 items. Service was slow, even though not a lot of people there (for Valentines day). I was not impressed enough for 5 stars.
Service was great but food average.
The food was not as good as I expected. The shrimps were great but the sauce wasn't as good. And they have no sugar substitute product, I like my coffee with Splenda and I'm a diabetic but they had nothing for diabetics. Please carry some sugar substitutes for the diabetics
Good food, a nice cozy atmosphere, attentive service. French onion soup a little too sweet, which probably could be improved upon by cutting down on the bulk of onions.
It was rainy and very cold and they had us (and most of the table) outside, covered, with plastic sheet walls and heaters going but it didn't stop the cold gusts of wind. Very unpleasant. Good food - too bad about the environment. Come on a nice warm day.
I hope to go back when it's not pouring rain. There appeared to be one server who was managing a lot and it took a little longer than we wanted to get our check. Everyone was very friendly and the food was great, they seemed like maybe they were "off."
This was our first visit to Evangeline. It was a weeknight and there were very few diners there besides us. We were somewhat disappointed not to see cassoulet on the menu as we had seen it previously on the online menu. I had a Paloma cocktail, butternut squash soup and mushroom risotto which were delicious. My husband enjoyed a glass of wine, little gem salad and shrimp etouffé. The waitstaff were pleasant and efficient, our server wished me a happy birthday several times. We enjoyed the music as well.
We took my daughter and son-in-law our to dinner and had a wonderful evening!!!
Service was excellent and interesting menu. We all loved the food. Very accommodating for special requests.
My husband and I took our friends here and had some pretty serious service issues. These involved a host and runner who challenged us about having a reservation and asking us to leave within an hour so they could give our table to someone else and then challenging us again as to whether we had a reservation after we got our appetizers. This is an updated review — the original was extremely critical. However, after I sent a message to the restaurant regarding the issues, I received the kindest message from the restaurant owning the issues and assuring us that they addressed this with the staff. It’s clear from that message that what we experienced was an anomaly rather than a regular occurrence. Because of the professionalism of the owner’s message, we’ll try them again. An owner who cares that much about guest experiences clearly takes pride in the food.
Evangeline is a fun place. Everything from music to food has a Cajun flavor. The crab sliders were wonderful. The bloody Mary was tasty and creative. Shrimp and grits were in a roux. The burger was tender and just right. Overall, a different fun place for brunch.
We enjoyed the special restaurant week menu. Good choices and food was good. Menu on the pricy side. Corkage fee $20 is too steep and out of line based on our experience.
Wonderful staff, and a romantic setting in covered/heated patio.
Presentation was great and the food was mostly good except our main entrees were mildly disappointing.
I ordered roasted chicken which was billed as brined and moist. It was tough and dry (overcooked). My partner ordered salmon and it was also tough and dry.
We loved our endive salad appetizer and lemon cake dessert.
Friendly, clean, creative, fantastic wine! My home kitchen while in Calistoga!
Loved everything about it, except the host/server was pretty rude to us when we arrived for our reservation (seemingly because they close at 2). But we made reservations several days in advance so it shouldn't have been an issue.
Evangeline was disappointing. Their supposedly heated, enclosed patio is cold and drafty on a 46 degree evening in January (drafts come in through the tented doorway that has to be opened every time a server comes in or out, and from under the tent, so one's feet and legs freeze). They seated us there even though we said we had flown in 24 hours from overseas and were jet lagged and cold! They served the soup barely lukewarm - when we asked for it to be heated, they microwaved it with the dollop of creme fraiche in it! or so it appeared when it came back over hot, with the creme fraiche sort of dissipated and the crunchy carrot slices soggy. The endive salad was overly sweet. We decided not to attempt any entrees and left. The server was very polite and appropriately concerned so we left him a nice tip. But overall - definitely not worth its reputation.
Great service. Cozy but lively atmosphere. Delicious cocktails. The duck breast/confit was outstanding!
They sat us outside on a cold night, and everyone had to eat with their winter coats on! Thefood was subpar, and the soup arrived lukewarm. The service was slow and inexperienced. We were disappointed by the whole, overpriced experience.
Just wonderful. A perfect place for our 38th anniversary.
Staff was very attentive, the food was wonderful! A perfect way to celebrate our anniversary! ❤️
Good food for visitors to Calistoga.
High noise level but fun!
Food and service below par. Not worth the high price.
Expected a fine dining experience with our reservation - got a view of a bar TV, the continuous line for the single bathroom and slow service. Upside was the food was excellent but disappointing overall.
Our party of five for Boxing Day dinner apparently suffered an absence of the main chef during holiday time because everyone’s meals were either seriously undercooked or over cooked, and the food was not good despite its very expensive price tag.
We had an amazing experience here!!! The service was awesome and so was the food.
Nice place in Calistoga. The food service and atmosphere were excellent.
Food was very tasty, but the service was rather slow (it took almost 8 min before someone even noticed we were there and it was not at all busy) and the building was very cold.
We are local Calistogans and Evangeline is one of our "go-to" spots for an always excellent food and wine experience. We love our favorite server, Roxanne. We are also excited to see what the new chef has in store for the future!
We loved our dinner at Evangeline. The food was served quickly and our waitress was a delight. I would highly recommend Evangeline.
The menu has changed and from the last time I dined there last year, they had fewer vegetarian options. I would give them 5 stars all around, but, when I called to ask, the person answering the phone seemed put out that I was asking. It turned out to be one of the best little gem salads and wild mushroom pastas I have had. The food was phenomenal. However, the dessert disappointing considering the quality of the entrees and salads. Overall, a great meal.
Nice food but small portions and not value for money.
We enjoyed a light dinner prior to the Tractor Parade. We were seated promptly and quite cozy at our little table. Our server was wonderful. We have eaten here many, many times and depend on good service and food. The food, while good, was not as outstanding as in times past. Very surprised that the mussels had no broth, for example. Hoping this was an anomaly due to the busy night.
We went on a busy night (the tractor parade) so maybe their service was not what it usually is. Some of our party really enjoyed their dishes; I was less impressed. We were seated outside in the plastic enclosed area which would be fine except that the noise level made it impossible to speak or hear. Also it was excessively warm - one in our party left early just to stand outside. And the bathroom situation at this restaurant continues to be inadequate. All in all an okay experience but we will probably try another restaurant for our next night in Calistoga.
Excellent service (Roxanne) and food. The outside patio was super cozy!
A neighborhood gem you cant stop going
Great food. A little different from your average Northern California flair. The French twist was awesome. Great wine selection as well.
Great meal while visiting wine county. Calistoga is more laid back and less crowded then Napa. This was a perfect stop for a quit dinner. God food. Good service. Will definitely be back.
Lovely ambiance and great food.
