In 2013, Thomas Carter and Ignacio Mattos took over the intimate space that once housed the Knitting Factory music venue and turned it into estela. Set above Houston Street, the lively restaurant serves a New-American menu, cooked with a personal approach that incorporates the many diverse experiences and cultures of New York City. There is a deep wine list, as well as a bar serving cocktails late into every evening.

Some of the food was excellent, some of it was fine but very well thought out, cocktails and wines were disappointing

Really tasty food, and service was fine, but I wouldn’t say our waiter was particularly friendly. Not cheap when you consider the size of the plates, so spent more than we realized, but the food is worth coming back for.

Great food! The chef has a way of combining ingredients in the most unusual but delicious way and the presentation is good

The food was outstanding- really inventive and tasty. The portions are small- even the “large plates”, which are too expensive for what you get. It’s a trendy place, so you’re paying to be in a scene. The waiter was officious and impatient and bossy- he kept telling us we should get this or that even when my friend said she did not like an ingredient. He judged us for not wanting a $25 glass of wine. Really unpleasant experience with him.

The food was surreal. Inside of the restaurant was a bit cold but maybe they would have fixed it if we said anything. Other than that everything was amazing. We saw Jane Birkin's daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg enjoying her dinner as well.

Estela was all it is cracked up to be! The food was unique enough and truly satisfying. The ambience is lively, loud but not too loud and easy to have a conversation with your date/party. The mussels escabeche on toast is a must have. However, you could literally order everything on the menu and not be disappointed!

I brought my husband here for his birthday and the food was so good I booked it for an outing with my friends immediately after leaving the restaurant.

Incredible, amazing food. Lamb ribs were a little disappointing, but everything else was outstanding and inventive and so flavorful! And they should pick better music, perhaps a little softer, as it's so loud in there, but disco didn't quite fit the beautiful cuisine.

Loved the service (polite, helpful and not pushy/rushy). We ordered 4 dishes to share in two people (plus dessert) and it felt like a "tasting menu": loved the pace/timing it was served and how the flavors evolved with each dished. The wine recommendations paired well with the food. Loved it! I'd definitely go back for the same dishes and also try new ones.

Our waitress was pretty rude most of the night and was very pushy about ordering more food. She also forgot our last dish and kept pretending like it was still coming out even though everything else came out really quickly. Food was good, but not sure for the price. This is more of a place I would grab a glass of wine at the bar then get a full meal. Loved the decor though!

Food was better in thought than execution, and quite expensive for small plates. The foie gras was underdone and soft -- not so desirable when eating an organ. Lamb ribs were likewise underdone -- soft and chewy, when ribs should be savory, with a crusty exterior. Bottarga was undetectable on the scallops, which were nonetheless tasty. And it is LOUD. Lovely waitress.
