In 2013, Thomas Carter and Ignacio Mattos took over the intimate space that once housed the Knitting Factory music venue and turned it into estela. Set above Houston Street, the lively restaurant serves a New-American menu, cooked with a personal approach that incorporates the many diverse experiences and cultures of New York City. There is a deep wine list, as well as a bar serving cocktails late into every evening.

My real definition is that it is too expensive in relation to what you get. Food is OK but not in relation to price. And the menu is limited.

Our meal at Estela was truly one of the most exciting dining experiences we've had of late. Every dish knocked our socks off and that is both not an exaggeration and not easy to do. Summer squash with miso purée, crab with brown butter, mussels escabeche, pork with gold plums and squash blossoms stuffed with corn, endive, cured sea bream. The menu almost doesn't matter because it has changed already. Multiple wines by the glass so we could explore the very solid wine list. Every dessert. Put yourself in your server's hands. You'll be happy you did so.

Some of the dishes are great. Others are just good or ok. Dishes are pretty small

the food was creative and very good, the ingredient combinations were very interesting as well and fit together very well. all the wine list is imported wine, i have expected some American wine as well, however the pricing was very erasable for the wine.
the service was very good and done on a timely manner.
the desert was not as good as the rest of the food.
overall worth going there

We had a Great Great Night - very Well executed dishes, simple but with surprising and exciting textures !!! We were 4 hungry ladies - and sharing 7 dishes was perfect. We ended up sharing all 4 deserts on top which was exciting ! Fun and very interesting desserts - a great feature that they were so different but complimented each other and they were fresh and not too sweet or heavy.
We were recommended lovely natural wines that paired perfectly with our food as well !!!
Would love to come back on my next trip to NYC !

Favourite dishes were the cured sea bream with cucumber and basil and the summer Squash with pine nuts and miso !!!

My taste buds were high on food that night.
Thank you !

My husband and I went there for anniversary and we looooove the food. We picked this place because it has the most creative Sunday brunch options, as most restaurants don’t offer lunch on Sundays. We felt like we were almost too dressed up for the place as it’s more like a layback environment, but the food reaches high standards. Will definitely come back and recommend it to our friends!

The noisiest restaurant I’ve ever eaten at. Disappointing as the food is excellent. Wine expensive.

I visited Estela with a small group of girlfriends on a Wednesday night. We were surprised to be able to get a reservation at short notice, but when we arrived the place was busy. We had a short wait for our table and ordered cocktails from the bar - all were delicious! The food was outstanding. Between us we shared a number of plates: iberico ham (excellent), crab salad (excellent), beef tartare (good), burrata (good), crispy rice with squid (excellent), ricotta dumplings (these were ok - not really what we were expecting), steak (excellent). A decent wine list too, but a little on the expensive side - as expected in NYC.
The service was impeccable, the hostess and our waitress were super friendly and attentive the whole night. Definitely recommend a visit.

The table was late, however the staff handled it with kindness and grace. New York has great restaurants so it is more impressive that Estela manages to excel with a creative and delicious cuisine.
I will be back and recommend to friends.

A updated take on Italian food. Some dishes are a hit yet some not so much.
The small plates are all good. In the entrée section we liked the Ricotta tortellini with mushrooms. The lamb ribs were a bit on a fatty side and we did not finish the portion.
The wine list has no American selections that we noticed and seems a bit overpriced for what it is. We had a Sicilian wine which was pleasant but not that special.
Deserts were also mixed. The chocolate cake was delicious but the icecream was underwhelming.

overall a lovely experience but we will not make the trip again

We were very excited to try Estela. I really dislike leaving poor reviews, as I am grateful to restaurants trying hard to serve people and maintain a good business. Unfortunately, my wife and I were disappointed. Service was ambivalent at best - excepting the Sommelier, who was excellent. Food was average, with some dishes that were quite poor in our view that we didn’t even eat. Very loud restaurant, which I understand is what some people are looking for. It felt to us as though we had been seated at a party of four’s table, we were so close. The gentlemen beside us was much louder than my wife, which was a bit frustrating. For a $300 meal for two, we were hoping for more.

We ate some of the best tapas! The black rice with romesco and squid is AMAZING. All the dishes really pack a punch of flavor. Our server helped us pick out wine and they did not disappoint. Wish we had this restaurant on Chicago!

For last two years my “ go to” restaurant knowing there will be no disappointment. Can exhale and just enjoy. No dish has been below very good and a few stalwarts always meet high expectations. Be back soon.

I am a regular at this restaurant because the food is carefully prepared, the flavor combinations are original and integrated with skill. As usual, the endive salad is full of surprises, the mackerel perfectly prepared and allowed to be itself. Recommend without reservation.

Great food. Ricotta dumplings are not to be missed. The chocolate cake still has me swooning. Lemon tart was refreshing and a nice counter balance. Loved the cool and unpretentious vibe.... our waiter was straight from heaven. Knowledgeable, gracious, just a total delight! I’m looking forward to going back.

Excellent food with a good, if limited, wine list. Always love spending time at Estella, though our table was in the bar section which was crowded and loud. I have always sat in the restaurant area before, and felt the two tables in the bar where an attempt to excrete further revenue at the expense of the consumer experience.

Way way too loud. Is at the front windows or in the back. The middle section with the small circle tables is not good. Too close to table next to it. Otherwise food was really good. May be less noisy if we had asked for seat at the bar; but they filled up quickly.
