The waiter we had did not take our order correctly, and made us question how much he was attentive and listening to our orders. But most importantly the food was a little disappointing. Very greasy and salty unfortunately.

The food at Esteban is very good. We had Easter Brunch which I thought was very pricey but the options were wonderful. Everything we ate was delicious. We have been here before and enjoyed our meal

All of the dishes that were sent out did not seem acceptable for human consumption. The potatoes they sent had obviously been cooked hours prior - they were soggy. The octopus was swimming in a literal pool of oil. Worst of all - the Paella was flavorless and lacked any of the flavors that make this Spanish dish so wonderful.

It is most appreciated when all courses of the meal are good, but also important when the waiter is knowledgeable about what the menu offers. To be able to provide friendly service and good advice opinions makes a big difference in the entire meal enjoyment.

We attended the special event with Spanish food. It was outstanding. the service was good but the server was a little stiff. The ambience of the place is great! This is a great place for couples night or small dinner with friends no. They have a shy private dining room that would be great for larger parties I would definitely recommend this place for a very nice meal and great ambiance. They also have a great drinks menu.

The service and ambiance was impeccable. Unfortunately the paella wasn’t at par. It was pretty bland and without flavor. The cocktails though are amazing especially one that I think is called Spanish Paradise which has coconut and pineapple ( like a twist on piña colada. ) I would come back here sometime but just not for the paella.

We made a meal out of the selection of small plates "To Share" one night. On the second, we had two small plates, a paella, and shared desert. The baby lamb chops were particularly nice as was the harvest paella with many different locally sourced fresh vegetables.

The Tuesday paella night 4-course pries fixe dinner was excellent! The foie gras appetizer was the best appetizer we've ever tasted, the butternut squash was exquisite, the seafood paella was great (the reason we came), and there were two desserts! The use of persimmon, pomegranate seeds, quince and other somewhat unusual ingredients enhanced the experience. The inside seating is not large, but cozy, with a nice stone fireplace. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. The price was incredibly reasonable for the quantity and quality of the food.

I don't normally even bother to review restaurants, but considering this is the first time I've ever left a place actually angry, I figured it might be worth the effort. My friends and I have been eating tapas and paella here for Thanksgiving and our occasional trips to Monterey for the past 4 years, and while in the past they were fabulous; the service on on past 2 visits has completely fallen off a cliff. By that I mean basically non existent. I don't know if it's new management or what, but the whole restaurant was being poorly run. We didn't even have a server show up for 15 minutes; after which he then forgot to bring us plates (it's a tapas restaurant so plates for sharing are pretty necessary) or water. Our order wasn't written down, so several of our dishes were never put in, and had to be reordered, which wouldn't have been that big of an issue if our server showed up to the table once in awhile, but we basically didn't see him again until the end of the meal. At one point I had to get up and order my drink at the bar because we hadn't seen him in so long. They were definitely not busy, so I don't know what was up, but it was really inexcusable. We left hungry and exasperated with trying to get our dinner. The food is still good if you can get service long enough to actually get any so there's that. Paid full price, and didn't bother to complain since it looked like the tables around us were experiencing the same issues, and we just wanted to get out and not waste anymore of our night there. We had a very similar experience on our previous visit, but thought it was an off-night fluke, since we've always had a good time here, but I guess this is just how they run things now. All in all, considering the price point, it's totally not worth it anymore. This will be our last visit to Esteban.

We had a variety of tapas or "starters" and all were excellent. We also had the shellfish paella which had wonderful flavors. All in all, a crearive dinner at a very reasoable price. Four of us paid $130 (without tip) which included one corkage fee of $15. Great waiter as well (Rashad?).

I don't often give reviews and I try to give most places the benefit of the doubt. Upfront I'll say the setting outside was nice. Great evening in Monterey w/ friends but we expected much more from a place who makes Paella a centerpiece of their menu. To say the paella was mediocre would be generous, in fact we ordered two different versions and both were arguably tasteless. Honestly, I wonder if the chef's bother to taste the recipe from time to time, no seasonings, no spice. It just seems like some key ingredients were omitted in our two dishes. We did have a great shrimp appetizer that we thought would pave the way to great main course. We also had the Wrapped Dates appetizers which were good and the Red Sangria was excellent. So going into the main we were all excited to have the good carry on. Anyway, suggestions to the establishment.. Audit from time to time, make sure recipes are being followed, I'm certain that you likely know how to make good Paella, but this past Saturday night, it failed.

We were seated promptly. Our server took drink orders right away. He was helpful in explaining portion sizes of the different menu categories (appetizers, small plates, entrees, etc.). We ended up choosing just the right amount of food, thanks to the server's assistance, and we even had room for ice cream. The red sangria was delicious, and for some reason we got a raspberry mojito on the house, and it was very good. You must try the pulled pork empanadas. Amazing! Made with puff pastry instead of short crust. We will return here next time we are in Monterey.
