Essy's Carriage House
Essy's famous jumbo lump crabmeat recipe, deep fried or sautéed
Jumbo Lump Crab Meat Benedict
Poached Eggs and Crab Meat Atop a Toasted English Muffin, Topped with Hollandaise Sauce
Cubes of Tender Beef in a Brown Sour Cream Sauce, Served with Noodles and Salad
Wonderful experience! Our brunch (eggs Benedict and French toast) was delicious (the RUM BUNS remind me of the old Hogate’s and Flagship in the District) and the service was impeccable and solicitous. Fresh hot coffee (even decaf!) and they kept our cups filled. The lump crab cocktail was a truly decadent indulgence. Even the accompanying cocktail sauce tasted homemade. The Hollandaise was also freshly made and lemony. Great convenient location. A bit pricey.
Treated us like family so we went back with family.
We came here with a group of 6 after my step father said that he wanted steak. We were the only people in the restaurant and I'm mind blown as to why! This food was so good. Each person there ordered a different entree, so I was able to eat them all. From the crab cake to the filet everything was cooked well, and with love. I'd 100% go back.
Great food, great service, plenty of parking and able to have a conversation without begin loud.
This place was great. The owners are very personable and make you feel at home. Highly recommended.
We enjoyed a lovely Valentine's brunch at Essy's. It's a really classy, old-school place and a lot of fun. The food was excellent and service outstanding. The classic "carriage house" design and ambience is great. We can definitely recommend it.
It was NYE and iur anniversary. It could not be more memorable. Food excellent, staff most attentive. We will be back
Went here for New Years Eve. Expected to be able to choose from their regular menu, but only a menu with less choices was available. While I understand creating a special menu to celebrate the holiday, the choices were less than desirable compared to the original menu i wanted choose from. The high cost price of being forced to order from the special menu didn't help. My dining experience wasn't horrible, but could have been much better. My advice would be for the restaurant to create their special menu for patrons to choose from, but still allow their original menu as an option as well.
Great restaurant. Owner waited on us and was fun and personable! Food was great! They made Christmas away from home a special memory. We will be back again!
A gem of a restaurant located in Cherrydale (Arlington). We've been coming here for years and always enjoy it. For Christmas lunch, Essy served up a perfect duck l'orange and a delicious lobster bisque. My husband had requested a special bottle of wine, which Essy went out and got for the occasion. This is a top notch restaurant, consistently great. Their Veal Piccata and Beef Stroganoff are my all-time favorites. The menu changes, so good to call ahead to check whether it is on the menu. The restaurant has the feel of a private dining room, with white tablecloths and classical music playing softly. Very comfortable and relaxing, yet classy. Highly recommend it.
Went to Essy's for Christmas lunch. Only one other table occupied when we arrived and one more came in while we were there. Service was excellent - very friendly and attentive which made for an enjoyable meal. The Xmas menu was somewhat limited - would have been nice to have some options for side dishes but overall the food was very good. Excellent value and the owner and staff obviously care very much for their customers which you can't put a price on. I would absolutely recommend Essy's.
We dined at Essy’s on Thanksgiving 2020 and had no idea what to expect. We were the only customers for their 7:30 seating! The service was wonderful, friendly, personal and couldn’t have been better. We had a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey with mashed potatoes, green beans, dressing, sweet potatoes and gravy. The lettuce for the salad was some of the nicest I have seen in a while and I would love to be able to find lettuce that good in grocery stores. We finished with pie for dessert, which was delicious.
We very much enjoyed our dinner and definitely plan on returning soon.
Was somewhat of a disappointment. Had good reviews but they didn’t live up to them.
Calamari was microwaved and very chewy. Entrees were just okay. Figured we would try dessert but found out it was a frozen pie. Nothing was fresh at all. Maybe we hit a bad night but won’t to be back to find out.
Beautiful evening to sit outside and savor the crab cakes!
Essy set up outdoor dining and it's great. So glad because we were missing his crab cakes and filet mignon. We tried the house sauvignon blanc and really enjoyed it. It was great to eat out again and being at Essy's is always like being with friends. He makes the evening fun and the food is always top notch.
A local favorite with good wholesome food, white table cloth ambience and friendly service.
Very pleasantly surprised by Essy's Carriage House. The food was delicious, excellent service and friendly atmosphere. I will definitely go back.
I have been wanting to try Essy's for a while now, but every time I drive by it always looks empty. Last night I decided to go. The restaurant had only a few people dinning. The menu choices were good and the filet that was ordered was well prepared and delicious. It was served with a house salad and potatoes and vegetable. Essay was our server and he was attentive. The meal was excellent. As the prices are more reflective of fine dinning, perhaps that is why the restaurant was empty.
Essy's is a landmark institution in North Arlington. Can't believe it took us years (decades) to finally check it out. Traditional old world fare in a comfortable, very quiet environment. Disclaimer: we went to dinner on Super Bowl Sunday, so most of the population was at home eating nacho platters or hunkered down in sports bars. Service was exceptional: cordial and incredibly welcoming. Looking forward to returning to explore the menu further.
All in the party were very satisfied with the food, service, and the restaurant overall. We would very definitely go back again.
We had a completely delicious dinner in a lovely atmosphere. The calamari appetizer was fantastic. We really loved the homemade cornbread! And our garden salads were fresh and tasty. Being from Southern Maryland, I know my crab cakes. And these are the ONLY ones I’ve found outside the state that pass my test! Perfect mix of jumbo lump backfin with just enough mixture to hold it together. Fabulous flavor! The daily special lamb shank dinner was huge and fell off the bone. The noodles and vegetables were a excellent match. We will be back often and being friends!
This is elegant dining in a simple quiet atmosphere. The service is timely, but never rushed. The food, from appetizers through dessert & coffee, was simply superb. The food presentation was simply elegant and delicious. This is definitely a neighborhood gem that requires several follow-on visits to partake of a broader experience of the available menu items! Would definitely recommend Essy's Carriage House for any occasion that required a well prepared and presented meal.
Found a new regular spot. Good food at a fair price, local owners, friendly. Definitely an addition to the night out but not over the top dinner out evenings.
Don’t know why we hadn’t been back sooner. Always great food and a great time. Plus parking!!
We had Christmas dinner here. The food was good. My husband had the prime rib which was okay. I had the duck which was fantastic! They were careful with my gluten free needs. Servers and staff were friendly and outgoing!
It was fantastic! Great food in a wonderful atmosphere!
Essys - is the quintessential charming neighborhood restaurant. You can tell the small team and owners take such pride in their service, entree selections and delivery of delicious home cooked meals. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five stars from Scottsdale Az. Thank You 🥰
Ate for the fixed Thanksgiving dinner with spouse, daughter, nephew. The food was uneven. While the pumpkin soup and salads were excellent, the turkey and potato’s and gravy were dry, not much gravy and the sweet potatoes were spiced like pumpkin pie. The pecan pie was huge, but not wonderful. It was nice to stay in our neighborhood but not a memorable experience.
Very nice dining experience. Essy was our server and his sense of humor made for a memorable delightful dining experience. The food was excellent worth the value. We had the fried seafood platter and French onion soup appetizers.
Wonderful choice of menu items. Food was very good and service was excellent. The owner, Essy, is delightful and has a wonderful sense of humor. No loud music to distract from conversations. My friends and I will definitely return.
We were greeted at the back of the restaurant awkwardly, and the staff were not aware of our reservation even though we called ahead to confirm. Once we were seated, the waiter grabbed the inside of my glass with his fingers and had a dirty bandaid wrapped around one of his fingers. I was instantly repulsed! With closer inspection, none of the dishes looked as though they were cleaned properly. We stayed at the restaurant was only because we battled traffic from the airport to get to our reservation in time & wanted to give the restaurant a fair chance. Each plate was priced at $30, so I expected some grilled options. Instead, I was served fried shrimp and a dash of stale french fries, which tasted of overused frying oil. My husbands coleslaw smelled of rancid mayo and his crab cake was so salty, he could barely stomach it. The mixed drinks were weak. All questions to the waiter were countered with crude remarks. The food tasted like a fast food restaurant, should have been valued at $10 per plate. Needless to say, we won’t be dining at this establishment again.
Wine by the glass is not very appealing.
Quiet comfortable relaxing with good food and service
We had friends visiting from Chicago who were staying in Balston, so we checked Open Table to see restaurants close to their hotel and decided on Essy's because of the reviews. We were pleasantly surprised! The food, atmosphere and service were all outstanding. Two of us tried the beef short ribs and two had the crab cakes. You did not need a knife to cut the beef, it was so tender. The crab cakes were also delicious, not too much filler mostly crab meat. And Essy, our host was great! We will definitely be going back.
We returned to Essy’s after a long time because a friend raved about the crab cakes. We shared the mini crab cakes as an appetizer and they were indeed very, very good - full of jumbo lump crab. Salads were crisp and fresh and the house dressing was excellent. Entrees were well prepared and enjoyed. We will return in a much, much shorter time.
What a great dining experience! Food was great and Essy made us all feel so welcome. Highly recommend if you are looking for great food in a nice setting with a casual atmosphere
Essy is our neighborhood restaurant and we have always enjoyed the service, food and ambience.
Tried Essy's for Father's Day Brunch for the first time, excellent as always. Great selection of Brunch classics, everyone enjoyed their selections (french toast, ham/cheese omelette, eggs benedict, quiche).
Been going to Essy's for many years, meeting one of my best and oldest friends. The service is friendly and prompt, and the food, as I'm concerned is some of the best I've ever had.
Friendly, quiet and lovely food!
