Essensia Restaurant & Lounge Ratings and Reviews
We dined here on New Year's Eve. The setting was beautiful, surrounded by lush tropical plants. The meal was good but not great. The service was also good, but not as "connected" as was hoping. This is likely due to being in a very busy touristy area. If the food and service was as good as the atmosphere, it would be superb. As it was, very good.
We went here for our anniversary. My husband had the duck and I had the special, scallops. Both were absolutely spectacular. Our waiter and the manager were so sweet. I put in our reservations that we did want not want to be seated near children, we were one of 2 tables sat when a family came in with 2 kids and the hostess sat them next to us. We asked to be moved and the waiter was more then understanding. Towards the end of our meal the hostess (who we asked again not to be seated near children and a quiet location) seated a family of six next to us. The waiter came by and apologized and the manager gave us 2 drinks on the house for our anniversary. We really were so pleased with everything except the fact hat the hostess just wasn’t paying attention to detail in such a high caliber restaurant. I wish we could remember our waiters name.
The services was not good at all. The restaurant was not even full, but our waiter (who was nice) forgot about us and I had to stand up and look for her many times (the rest of the staff would just say, let me get your waiter, instead of offering to help, which really shcoked me, they don't seem like a team). The food was ok. Really dissapointed
Mixed feelings about our date night at this restaurant. It's a lovely spot and the wait staff were warm and welcoming. And the food was pretty good. But there were two big issues for us--the wait staff seemed highly disorganized. Different waiters appeared, said they were going to check on certain things in the kitchen and didn't come back until we went for the manager. Most importantly, at least two dishes on the menu that were identified as being gluten-free were not. One person in our party has celiac and when we asked the waiters to double check whether the fried plantains in these dishes were fried in the same grease as gluten items they came back and said that it indeed was a shared frier. So not gluten-free meals as advertised--once again, a major problem for an individual with celiac.
The outside seating area had a very nice ambiance that was very classy. The food was phenomenal. I had the braised short rib over a bed of gnocchi. The meat was perfectly cooked and melted in your mouth. The service was good but nothing over the top. I feel like most Miami restaurants have "order takers" and not waiters/waitresses. This didn't take away from the overall experience however and I would definitely go back.
We keep coming back year after year to Essensia, one of our favorite restaurants. The Miami Spice menu was a great deal and we enjoyed everything. The short rib was to die for and the flan dessert was just the right size to cap off a delightful meal. We always enjoy sitting outside, relaxing, and having a pleasant conversation away from the hustle and bustle of South Beach.
Went for their August Miami Spice menu.
As SoBe locals we usually do not venture into the mid/north Miami beach area too much, but this one was truly a great choice!
They have a lovely bar and seating area (copious!) and the cocktails, even though not reduced, were quite voluminous and rather good.
Restaurant has a beautiful outdoor veranda style seating area that evoques plantation romatic comparisons, and hence is a beautifull location (indoors available too).
Their main menu clearly reflects a vast choices of meat and seafood choices and their famr-to-table approach was evident (with an award to go with it)
Options for starters and entree were right of their top-shelf items on the menu, and they did NOT reduce the size of the dishes (commendable!).
Grilled octopus and my 'ropa-vieja' (pulled-beef) plantain tostada was exquisitely delicious.... used bread to soak up all the sauce... :-)
The mains were fantastic - their Bouillabaisse had an asian hint to it, which made it probably the best and innovative I have tasted - subtle to not affect the fish tastes yet unusual enough to delight; all seafood elements were on point - not a single item was under or overcooked... rare to find in a bouillabaisse (all about technique!). The braised beef short rib over gnocchi was fabulous - healthy portion and perfectly cooked, with fall-apart gnocchi and a reduced sauce that was to die for...
The flancocho and the mango tart desserts were very good, but I could not stop thinking of the mains... :-)
Anyway, I realize they swap out menu items in Septmeber, but based on their main menu I do not think you will be disappointed, regardless of what they decide to put on the Spice Menu!
It was kind of strange. The way the hostess was running around and asked us to sit and wait for our table, I thought the restaurant was jammed. But when we were finally seated after a 10 minute wait, the inside dining area was relatively empty. Strike 1. Once seated, we waited another 10 minutes for someone to bring water and ask for drink orders. Strike 2. It seemed like they had a lot of staff walking around between servers, waiters, busboys, etc. so I don't know why the service was so slow. We were actually thinking about leaving, when the guy that served us water came by and asked if we had any questions about the menu. We asked a few questions, that he was unable to answer, so he said he would be right back? When he did come back, his answers were all wrong. Strike 3. We were hungry, so we decided to order. They brought a basket of bread and butter and olive spread...so we sat eating bread and water waiting for our dinner. No one ever came by and asked if we wanted more water or bread... we just sat inside a virtually empty dining room waiting. Strike 4. At this point it was comical. We were wondering how this place could be so mismanaged? Did people not show up for work? Did staff quit or get fired? We were getting to the point were I was shining my I-Phone light to get someones attention for some water. No Joke, after I got someone's attention for water, it was another few minutes before they came back. Dinner was finally served and to our shock...it was EXCELLENT! The food was worth the wait! The kitchen prepared flawless food that was delicious.... No one came by to check on us, once it was served. No one asked if we would like drinks. A busboy came over and cleared our plates, but our server or waiter never came back to ask if we wanted coffee or dessert. A very strange night! I started shining my I-phone light to get their attention, so I could get the check and get out. When we finally left, I guess it was a manager that said, "Thanks for coming"
Extremely poor services from beginning to end. Always would have to make an effort to find our waiter. We arrived first and had to wait for 2 people to come. In the first 10 min no one came to offer us a drink, we had to find and ask a waiter to bring us 2 cocktails. Once our friends arrived again we had to look for a waiter as no one would come to the table, once they did and took the beverage order they never served it until we ask about it after 10 min. Food was very slow to come out of the Kitchen for a very simple avocado toast, potatoes and sausage dishes. We waited 15 min for dessert. Quality of food was average at best. And of course they include 18% gratuity and said that they were sorry that they had a lot of tables.
All in all an extremely poor experience that I wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Food took over an hour to come out after appetizers. I wouldn't have cared if it wasn't so hot in the outdoor seating area but that's all they had available (even though we saw plenty of seating indoors). Also one of the servers had extremely bad BO. The food however was amazing! All in all a very good experience.
My wife and I are constantly in search of healthy eating options. We came across this restaurant which was touted as organic. It is actually only somewhat organic. However, they did offer gluten free bread which was nice. Our entrees were pretty good. We had a fish dish, bouillabaisse and a steak dish. We are probably going to return.
There was a group of 5 of us that had a reservation for brunch at 11:30 AM. We were seated closer to 11:45 am, and should have known then that there was going to be an issue. I will say that the manager on duty was wonderful and very helpful, however we shouldn't have had to interact with him so much. Four of the five ordered from the prix fixe menu and almost all ordered the same thing. It took over an hour four our first course (avocado toast-nothing fancy) to come. In the mean time we were given other things to hold us over, but there was no reason for avocado toast to take so long. The restaurant was not busy at all, and no one else was eating either. In the end, our entire meal took over two hours, when we were expecting much faster food service. I would not recommend this place due to the extremely long wait times without any explanation.
