Esquire Grill Ratings and Reviews
Food was excellent. I had the tried and true Petrole Sole, a signature dish. Two had the ahi burgers and cleaned their plates, and one had the salmon special and, again, cleaned the plate. The apple crisp with vanilla gelato was fantastic. Service was a little slow for a lunch, especially long wait for desserts. But all in all, it was a good experience and I'll definitely return.
John usually loves the restaurant it is an institution in Sacramento. However he got really ill with the ahi tuna burger. He only ate about a 1/3 of it. He began to get stomach cramps walking from the restaurant to the office. Its about 3 blocks away. By the time he got here his eyes were red, his ears were red and burning and in about 20 minutes his entire face was red. He spent most of the next few hours in the bathroom. This has never happened before and he will no doubt come back . This was not what he expects from this restaurant,
My husband and I came here to have dinner before seeing a show at the Sacramento Community Center. We requested Richard, as our previous dinner at the Esquire Grill was even more exceptional with his expert service. We started with a dozen delicious oysters, shared the Frisee and Endive salad with persimmons and pepitas, and after cocktails, enjoyed some delicious wine suggested by Richard. My husband had the King salmon special and I had the Petrale Sole. Richard's timing of the meal was perfect. We didn't feel rushed and easily made it to the show by 8pm.
Our request for service that would accommodate a performance at the Crest Theater was perfect. The food was beautifully served promptly without a rushed feeling. The serving staff was perfect, moved along but never made us feel hurried or harried. This will be our go-to restaurant in downtown Sacramento for sure. The food was delicious and the presentation beautiful. The sauces and herb treatment were spectacular. We would definitely recommend this restaurant.
It was very busy due to a show at the community center. The waiter was short (probably too busy) and made mistakes on our order. The steaks came and 2 were cold and one was the wrong one. The manager came over and had the food fixed, bought us each a drink, then the waiter was much more attentive.
When the restaurant isn't crowded, or on New Year's Eve with a Prix Fix menu, there aren't any problems. Having said this, the last 2 times we have eaten here (within a 6 month period) has been less than pleasant...almost disastrous.
We scheduled 2 hours for dinner before Saturday night theater events. On both occasions, we were assured we would be out in time...and BARELY made it. For this last meal, water was served quickly, but it slowed down from that point on: orders taken 15 minutes in, soup/salad served 30 minutes in. At 1 1/2 hours in, the manager comes to tell one of our foursome that they are out of sole and asks him to select another entree (they are JUST putting our order in). We are served entrees with 15 minutes to curtain so we had to eat very quickly. The pork chop was only warm and overcooked. The steak was fatty. The risotto and salmon were fine.
No time for coffee and dessert, although we had planned on it.
The manager came to apologize and tried to expedite our bill. When we asked what happened, his response was "Things just didn't come together well tonight." Vague, non-responsive, no offers to comp given the rushing when we were finally served.
The previous experience was similar...delayed, then rushed out the door with no time for dessert. I'm not sure what has changed, but twice is enough for us. We will not return.
The salmon tasted like it was cooked over propane. It had a distinct gas taste and smell. We were seated in the farthest corner of the restaurant and it was so dark I used my cell phone for light. First time here and it was a great location before the play but very disappointing
Had a 5 pm dinner reservation before an 8 pm show at the theater. Had drinks, a relaxing dinner and dessert. Had over an hour to walk around downtown before the show. Great service and meal. Will definitely be back. And they validated parking in the adjacent parking garage.
We were seated immediately, and our server was a gem! We were in and out in time for the theater across the street. My friend and I each had a wonderful salad, and decided to split an entree. The entree was split for us and serve beautifully. Plenty for both!
My husband and I dined at Esquire Grill for our anniversary before going to the Community Center Theater. Honestly, the service was horrid. After waiting in line for 8 minutes to be seated (we had a reservation), we were simply ignored for 15 more minutes before even being given a menu. Then, when I ordered the sole, that is when the waitress told me they were out of it! There was nothing special about this restaurant and it was pricey for what we got.
Our 4 person party arrived for our reservation on time at 6 pm and were seated promptly. We had tickets for an 8 pm theater performance. It took 1 1/2 hours for our order to arrive. No appetizers were ordered just our meal. Portions were small and quite pricey $26 for less than a cup of vegetable rissoto; the other 3 meals were comparibly small for the price. The food was decent tasting ,not special at all. The only explanation about what had happened was a “we’re sorry “it took so long. We walked into the theater at the 3 minute warning that the show was starting. Not a relaxing pre theater meal!
Our meal was delicious. Our server, Richard, was great. We were going to the theatre after dinner. We gave our server our credit card at 7:30. We, like many others, finally went to the register because we feared that we would be late for the theatre. We were all anxious and frustrated that it was taking so long to take care of the bill. I was surprised that they weren’t prepared for that rush because it is most likely the case before every Community Center production.
Service was poor - two separate times they tried to deliver something we didn't order. Took 2 hours to get through our meal. On any other night that might be ok, but we had to get to a show.
Steak was below average - rib eye ordered medium well came out medium rare at best, and not enough time to send it back. Fish special tasted like frozen breaded fish sticks.
Due to traffic delays we were 45 mins. late. We called but whomever took the message failed to pass it on! We lost our table but sat at the bar which was fine for just two...not comfy for more than that, conversation-wise. The food was GREAT, service a bit slow but they were very busy and we had time...
We arrived at noon (our reservation time). Ordered drinks, then ordered off the menu. Our food did not arrive until 1:30 a full 1 1/2 hours later! We had told our waiter that we were attending a 2pm matinee at the Community Center Theatre directly across the way. We kept asking where our food was and were told 2 minutes. That was at 1pm and the food came 30 minutes later. We literally gulped down our food and then rushed to the theatre just in time to be seated--no time to read the program etc. etc. Fortunately the play was outstanding that almost made up for experience at the Esquire Grill. Not sure what was wrong as I had been there many times and had never had such poor service...can't really blame it on the waiter as he kept trying to keep us posted-had to be something in the kitchen.
Very disappointed. Haven't been there for awhile and it was not as good as in the past. Food was mediocre (NY Steak was very thin and cold) forgot to serve the vegetable, we had to ask - took our plate back and then returned with it with the veggie on a separate late. That is probably why steak was cold. The starters offered were different - nothing much to choose from; salads were not inviting. Entrees were limited. Definitely will check their menu out on line before we go again.
