Espana Tapas & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
It was a snowy night and the restaurant was empty, but it was nice to have a quiet dinner. We ordered apps and started with a salad for me and Galician soup(caldo Gallego) for my friend. We split boquerones (white anchovies), octopus with paprika & potatoes( pulpo a la feira as I call it), tortilla (Spanish omelette), and croquetas with ham. We each ordered a glass of wine and a small bowl of homemade potato chips was placed before us. The owner? manager ? spoke to us about my opentable request and why they no longer serve sardines. After dinner he was kind enough to offer us a liqueur that was made of herbs and very delicious. Overall we had a fantastic meal and would go back.
We have been here quite a few times and they never disappoint. Loved the lobster croquettes, paella and chicken in vodka sauce are so good. They surprised us by giving us a free dessert that said happy anniversary which I mention when I made the reservation through open table. A diamond in local restaurant in Suffolk county.
This was a last minute dining out find. I've passed by the place many times, and from the outside, it never caught my eye. Looks are deceiving as the inside is actually bigger than it appears from the outside. Based on good on-line reviews we gave it a try and were very happy. The service was excellent. The tapas we tried were all very good. Prices were very reasonable. I expect to be returning.
If I had to pick one area for improvement it is to have some wine pairing suggestions, or even some flights of wine for sampling.
From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave feel like a family experience. Nice and small an intimate. The best part is watching the owner take ownership and clear tables and help team and make suggestions to new customers. Octopus is wonderful and a must have. Will be back.
My wife and I went to this restaurant because we were out in the Stony Brook area. It was my first time there. Walking in, the restaurant has a strong musty odor. I am shocked no other reviewers mentioned it. It was overwhelming. You do get used to it, but I feel bad for anyone exposed to it on a daily basis. The service was very good. Everyone was polite and welcoming. The food however was just fine. The salad had strange pieces of asparagus in it that did not taste right, but we just picked them out. The soup was a pumpkin bisque that was nice. The empanadas were the highlight, they had white meat chicken and egg which was surprising but tasty. The flan was strange, it was more like a dense sponge cake that reminded my wife of her failed flan attempt at making flan. We ate some of the sugary egg syrup. I probably wouldn't go back here and I feel bad saying that because the staff was very nice, sorry.
Espana is always an excellent experience! Whether a date, with family or friends. The owner is on site and very, very nice. The food is amazing! Try the mussels! They are the biggest fattest tastiest mussels around anywhere! I have had almost everything on the menu and have not been disappointed.
Absolutely can't say enough about this restaurant. The food is always outstanding, the staff goes above and beyond. Faboulous!
Wednesday, BYOB. Also, The magician/mindreader they schedule (maybe monthly) is AWESOME. So much fun. Highly recommend! Note to Open Table: not sure how to click on your "noise level" choice. When I touch any bar it says "do not recommend". I think there is no Noise issue at all at this restaurant, it's a non issue.
Dont let the storefront fool you....espana tapas and wine bar is bigger than it looks, updated, serving delicious authentic spanish cuisine, great wine list as well as great service....we consider it a true gem that has quickly become one of our go to places
Espana Tapas and Wine bar is well-named. The food is Spanish (rather than Cuban or Caribbean) , they have many small plate dishes (tapas) and plenty of wine. They also have full entrees. And it's all good! The host is extremely cordial and concerned about the customer and the wait staff is also good. We were seated (our choice) in the separate dining area which is quieter and more private than the main restaurant. The food was very good. My wife especially liked the caldego galallego soup. I liked the beef emanadillos. The restaurant has ample parking. A pleasant evening.
I wish I had trusted my gut that the many positive reviews were suspect. This place is simply awful. This place is hands down not only the worst tapas but the worst food I have ever eaten. The shrimp in green sauce was boiled shrimp in a tasteless gray sauce. The meatballs were like mini hockey pucks and reminded me of my elementary school cafeteria. The stuffed peppers were inedible. The sangria was nothing more than some awful fruit juice with mushy fruit. A day later and I am still suffering from severe indigestion. Any other restaurant you may be considering would be a better choice.
Have driven past this place many times but tried it for the first time this past weekend. It is an unassuming exterior, but a gem hiding in plain sight. The food was really good, the wait staff helpful in ordering the right amount of food and the service very attentive. My only issue was the noise level which was high. I would highly recommend.
Dined here for my husbands birthday. Food is always good. We enjoyed three tapas and one soup. We shared all, starting with the seafood soup. It was served hot and every ingredient was tender and well seasoned. We had a special of chic peas and shrimp, lots of garlic, so good. Next was the galacian style octopus, thin slices of octopus over thin sliced potatoes. No matter what else we order we always order that. Its just so good. Finally we ordered the mixed meat dish of tripe, veal and sausage. This was the only dish we didn't thoroughly enjoy. Meats were too mushy.
We were seated in the larger dining area (we prefer the bar area) and it was incredible noisy not just vibrant but loud. Hard to carry on a conversation.
The owner as usual is very attentive and comes around checking to see how everyone is enjoying the food and the experience.
Great find on a weekend trip to look at Stony Brook University. Restaurant staff was both attentive and helpful with offering numerous specials. Everything was delicious from the sangria to tapas to paella and lastly tres leches cake! Highly recommended for any occasion.
Espana is a fantastic restaurant and experience. The food and service is outstanding! We were seated right next to the live entertainment which was a brilliant guitarist. In other restaurants live talent tends to be very loud but this was literally a perfect volume. The owner is always around and makes sure that the your dining experience is the best it can be. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant!
We have gone to Espana about 10 times. We enjoy trying different Tapas dishes with a glass of wine. We enjoy the night that the Italian Singer (Tony) is there on a Friday night usually about once a month. The owner makes you feel welcome all the time. The waiters/waitresses are very good.
Treated our friends who just became grandparents; their first time at Espana. They loved everything about the restaurant: the food, service, live entertainment (and some dancing, too!). We've been coming regularly for 5 years, but thought this meal was even better than usual. Owner Julio Caro and his staff just keep making Espana Tapas and Wine Bar better and better!!
Great place. This was a meal with 9 business associates and just as good as with smaller groups. Food is always excellent and with the small plates, you have the opportunity to try so many different dishes. Wine list is great and offers nice values. Highly recommend Espana to anyone who wants great food in a welcoming environment.
