ESCAPE - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I'm wondering if we went on an off night. It was very unusual for there to be no one at the front acting as the hostess / greeter. The waitress had to stop serving to help get us seated and that was a true misstep considering she couldn't find our reservation and then proceeded to walk away. All was worked out when my husband peeked around a corner to find our friends already seated. Our dinner was very good - everyone enjoyed - the stand out appeared to be the fried chicken , but the portion sizes were very small so just be prepared for that. And don't order the crab grits. Literally a bowl of grits with a few pieces of crab for $26.
We love Escape for locally sourced, well prepared meals. Always several solid starters and at least a couple of entrees well paired with innovative sides that appeal to the selective eaters (picky, maybe) with dietary limitations. A nice, tranquil space and really friendly, competent staff.
very nice neighborhood restaurant. Simple and clean design, nice country store decor.
Food is good, not Micheline stars kind of food, but very tasty. Portions are smallish, but that's fine with my husband and me.
Overall it was a good experience and we'll go back again for sure
This was our third visit to Escape. My wife and I dinned here before seeing a show at the local Wellmont Theater. The service, food, and ambience was wonderful. I would highly recommend visiting during the week and getting the Prix Fixe which comes with a small plate, large plate, and dessert.
One of the highlights for me was when the chef sent over an extra plate of scallops to our table. He had made too many apparently so we were treated to extra. Very thoughtful and I nice bonus to the experience.
The food always feels like it needs a little bit more salt. The biscuits that are complimentary are nice, perhaps too small. The biscuits and cornbread come with a butterknife but we were not given silverware so we had to share the butterknife. I only bring this up because they were very weird about the silverware. My father had gotten a dish of grits and crab and was only given a spoon. So if he felt more comfortable with a fork, he didn't have one. The food was well prepared but again, very lightly salted and small plats overall. A place that I recommend an appetizer and a main.
The food was good -- what little of it was available. We arrived for a Saturday night 8:15 reservation. The restaurant was not particularly crowded. There were seven entrees on the menu (no specials). We were immediately informed that the restaurant had sold-out of three of the entrees. No big deal. So we placed our orders. (Two members of our party having been persuaded to order the EM Burger by our server). A few minutes later we were informed that the restaurant had sold out of everything but the hanger steak and one of the fish courses. (So...it is a little after 8:00 on Saturday night...you are not particularly crowded, but not empty either...and in a Town known for having a variety of good restaurant choices...you are not able to make five of the seven dishes on your menu...one of which is a hamburger). So we ordered. Again, the few bites of food that were brought out were good. In retrospect, I would guess that they only had enough to food for two fish entrees and one hangar steak -- so in order to accommodate our party of six, they cut the entrees in half. In short, we paid for a relatively expensive meal, had a few decent bites of food, and after leaving, had to figure out what we were going to eat for dinner. We won't be back. My guess, the restaurant is in some type of trouble (maybe financial) and is going under.
All was wonderful. Decor unremarkable;only offense were tacky fabric flowers on the tables.
Food on par with top restaurants.
Dessert selection problematic: two fruit based desserts (both good) but out of only chocolate dessert and this was an early(6:30) reservation
I was a bit skeptical about some of the flavor combinations on the menu. And Escape simply blew my mind. The folks at Escape appear to have figured out how to make food that sets off all the pleasure centers in one's brain. Impeccable service, and six flawless dishes - I'm really impressed.
Escape was a poor experience. The menu is very limited and expensive for the quality of food and experience we had. The foie gras appetizer was passable, though too dry. The Scallop entree was too salty and the Duck entree was also very salty, chewy and almost raw. Given a food allergy, I asked that the Cheddar grits be substituted with a vegetable and was told there would be an upcharge. The music playing was 1960's classic rock, either good or terrible depending on whether you were looking for a concert experience or a quiet dinner. The server was friendly and attentive enough, but management's view of a good customer experience is seriously lacking. We won't be back.
Usually one of my favorite local places, very disappointing this time
It was such a hot night, thought it would be nice to get out for dinner with my son and his friend. We arrived place was empty. The host/server took our order nothing significant to remember, neither overly friendly or rude.
bread appetizers and meal took longer than expected considering we were the only ones in the place. During appetizers we noticed it was getting quite warm. In fact my guests and I were all perspiring, thinking it may have been the wine. We tell our server and ask if she can correct it.
When the main course came I had ordered a side of squash for the table, she brought zucchini. When I told her I thought there was a mistake, she got a little defensive and said that's what I ordered. She went so far to get the menu to prove me wrong and it read squash! Her reply was zucchini is "summer Squash". By that time I was dripping in sweat because the air was not adjusted. My son and his friend inhaled their meals anyway, so I had mine wrapped to go!
I was one of the first patrons when Escape opened, met the chef/owner several times. Have truly enjoyed it on several occasions. After this experience I will second guess if I should return with so many other choices
Tasty food, but very small portions. Not really worth the money. Hardly anybody there on a Wednesday night, it was my birthday and the restaurant was notified ahead of time, but no freebies of any kind, just a single candle placed in the dessert that I ordered. All in all, a bit disappointing.
