Escape is a well-kept Mont Clair secret, serving locally sourced fine Southern fare on a continually rotating menu. Guests can enjoy dinner or weekend brunch at Escape, where the focus is to bring attention to farm-to-table ingredients in gourmet preparation. The chef and owner utilizes innovative cooking techniques to create the prix fixe and a la carte menus.
Diners at Escape love the prix fixe menu, which includes small plate options like roasted beets with goat cheese and sorrel or scallops with zucchini blossoms. Try the swordfish with tomato fennel crudo or the strip steak, followed by the wild blueberry spiced cake. There is also an all-vegetarian menu available at Escape upon request.
I'm wondering if we went on an off night. It was very unusual for there to be no one at the front acting as the hostess / greeter. The waitress had to stop serving to help get us seated and that was a true misstep considering she couldn't find our reservation and then proceeded to walk away. All was worked out when my husband peeked around a corner to find our friends already seated. Our dinner was very good - everyone enjoyed - the stand out appeared to be the fried chicken , but the portion sizes were very small so just be prepared for that. And don't order the crab grits. Literally a bowl of grits with a few pieces of crab for $26.
Everything was very good,. The poertions were small, but very tasty. Just a little pricey for the size of the portions
We love Escape for locally sourced, well prepared meals. Always several solid starters and at least a couple of entrees well paired with innovative sides that appeal to the selective eaters (picky, maybe) with dietary limitations. A nice, tranquil space and really friendly, competent staff.
Another great meal. We've been coming here semi-regularly since they opened & have literally never had a bad meal. Fresh, locally sourced & delicious. I think it's because the food is locally sourced and very fresh.
i've been to this place a number of times already and i like it every time. Good, tasty food.
Pleasant ambiance, not noisy. Neighborhood jem.
We have been to Escape many times. Food is always good, but always smallish portions. Service on our last visit was very indifferent, not really bad, just totally dis-interested and we could both tell that our server really did not want to be there.
Great overall experience. Delicious food. Good service.
Excellent food and menu, but understaffed. Perfect place to go with a bottle of wine and lots of time!
very nice neighborhood restaurant. Simple and clean design, nice country store decor.
Food is good, not Micheline stars kind of food, but very tasty. Portions are smallish, but that's fine with my husband and me.
Overall it was a good experience and we'll go back again for sure
The $35 prix fixe 3 course dinner is a steal. The food was sophisticated, delicious and beautifully presented. We will be sure to return.
We were going to a concert at the Wellmont and Escape is close by. The dinner was really tasty. The menu was interesting. It is BYOB which was great. Our server was terrific. Also liked the they the choices were mainly local and organic .
Escape was a random choice that we will be frequenting regularly going forward. The food was outstanding and the service was equally as good. Looking forward to my next time to go back.
The best beet salad I have had. Although they advertise "brunch" I would consider this lunch- it's great to bring your own champagne or bottle, but they did not have any juices to offer- just sodas. Can taste the fresh! Will be back to try them for dinner.
Food was very good, we both loved grits with blue crab. Lovely place, nice service but could be a little more attentive. It's BYOB and that makes the cost of dining out reasonable. We will go back again to try more dishes on the menu.
It was terrible and overpriced. My food was overcooked and my vegetables were gray. I spent almost one hundred dollars on terrible food when I was supposed to be celebrating my new job with my girlfriend.
This was our third visit to Escape. My wife and I dinned here before seeing a show at the local Wellmont Theater. The service, food, and ambience was wonderful. I would highly recommend visiting during the week and getting the Prix Fixe which comes with a small plate, large plate, and dessert.
One of the highlights for me was when the chef sent over an extra plate of scallops to our table. He had made too many apparently so we were treated to extra. Very thoughtful and I nice bonus to the experience.
Although the portions are on the smaller side, you do feel well fed when leaving. Everything is delicious.
Very nice dinner. I have been before. Consistently good every time.
They were out of the fried chicken. Our dinners were not cooked and we had to send them back. The pork and burger
The food always feels like it needs a little bit more salt. The biscuits that are complimentary are nice, perhaps too small. The biscuits and cornbread come with a butterknife but we were not given silverware so we had to share the butterknife. I only bring this up because they were very weird about the silverware. My father had gotten a dish of grits and crab and was only given a spoon. So if he felt more comfortable with a fork, he didn't have one. The food was well prepared but again, very lightly salted and small plats overall. A place that I recommend an appetizer and a main.
