About Erna's Elderberry House
"I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best." These words, compliments of Oscar Wilde, can be found over the kitchen door at Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant on the grounds of Château du Sureau. They seem to sum up the exquisite experience of dining at Erna's Elderberry House and the adjacent Château, where the vast culinary talents of Chef de Cuisine Jonathon Perkins now reign supreme.
The restaurant, with its European country-estate atmosphere, is divided into three lovely dining areas, each adorned with antique French provincial furnishings, magnificent tapestries and original oil paintings. A stately terrace with a commanding view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains adds to the fabulous ambiance.

Erna's Elderberry House Ratings and Reviews
Erna's remains one of my favorites, even when put up against some of the best Michelin two star's. The ambience is in a league of its own. The service was perfect - there when needed and never hovering. As the meal - I selected a five course dinner and my wife a four course, each with the wine pairing. Adding a round of before dinner drinks, the night was $400+ and worth every penny.
Your staff were very friendly from the time we walk through the front door. Bunch was out of this world. Waiters went up and beyond the call of duty. Have already told my family and friend about your restaurant. The next time I will be coming for dinner. Thank so much in advance.
This is a beautiful place, and though it is a very formal atmosphere that I and my date were not accustomed to, the staff was very friendly and made us feel comfortable. The food was decadent and wonderful, I would definitely recommend for special occasions!
One of my top five favorite restaurants for over 25 years! Every aspect of the dining experience - food, ambiance, service, romance, and the willingness and ability to modify the menu to meet dietary restrictions have been consistently excellent on dozens of visits! Ms. Erna is a perfectionist and a delightful person.
Charming old style elegance. Dined here for Thanksgiving. Pre-fix menu.
From home made European style bread to melange of desserts, everything
was elegant, tasty, unhurried. Made for good conversation over slow food.
Highly recommended for those special occasions.
I first read about this restaurant in Appellation Magazine, many years ago. I kept the write up and hoped to one day get there. It was everything the review said and more. We went for Thanksgiving dinner. The chefs were able to turn traditional turkey dinner into a gourmet extravaganza. Each course was uniquely delicious. Also, we chose to have the wines that were selected to match each course. Everything was spectacular. There are not enough superlatives to cover the experience.
Another outstanding meal! It’s been two days and I still haven’t gotten over the perfect texture of the grilled octopus appetizer.
The rib eye entree was juicy and flavorful. The wine pairings with each course were spot on. The service was attentive but not intrusive. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable of the food and the wines. Erna, made the rounds of the dining room and took the time to chat with us, which was particularly nice as our daughter was there for the first time. We could not have asked for a nicer evening.
We had a wonderful dinner at their restaurant and stayed overnight at the Chateau. Their service at both were amazing. I had previously taken Erna’s culinary classes and stayed at the Chateau. Our stay was over the top with great service and amenities. The accommodations and their location were more beautiful than I remembered. Can’t wait until we book another trip to Oakhurst.
Food was very good Service excellent Wine pairing was OK but expensive for the small amount of the pour versus the value of the wine Looked at the menu on line but when we got to Erna's was told that the menu was not being offered. The menu changes daily which is fine but the web site needs to state that. Went because the web site stated they had wild mushroom risotto and a wonderful sounding chocolate dessert but when we got there we were told none of that was being served .
Wonderful deliightful xperience.. service by brandon and his assistant impeccable. .. food amazing .. awesome presentation ...view increddible.. .. wine choice supurb..beautiful romantic elegant ambiance inside and out...anmiv treat so special n wonderful ..enjoyed meeting owner Erma...fab adventure ...will definitely recommend and return ..loved everything... the perfect 55th anniversary evening 💏❤💕
Our dinner was outstanding. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the attention given to her on her birthday. The experience of evening has been a highlighted subject of our conversation for the past few days, so much so, she is looking forward to her next birthday. Thank you all for a wonderful evening.
Outstanding in every way. Food, service, ambiance. I like that they seated couples and groups in separate rooms (groups make more noise). The wine list is substantial with many expensive choices, so you need to know what you are doing to tackle most of it. Fortunately there are also some good, familiar wines to choose that are well-priced. The best meal deal is the $75 three course.
Our waiter was Nicholas. We were the only customers while we dined. Other diners came in as we were leaving. Everything was outstanding. I had a 5 course tasting menu with matching wine which they customized for me because I am diabetic. They brought extra wines for me to taste. Modern French menu using the freshest local ingredients. I was really impressed.
We had the 3-course price fix dinner and made the mistake of adding the wine pairing. The 3-course dinner is $75 per person (very small portions, but adequate if you don't have a large appetite) and the wine pairing is $78 per person (very small pours) and is the same price of the wine pairing for the 5-course price fix dinner.
I called the restaurant a few days after we were there and questioned why the prices were the same, but 2 glasses of wine less. I spoke with a very sweet woman that assured me she would speak to the Wine Director and get back to me, that was several days ago and I haven't heard back.
I probably should have said something at the time of being served such a small portion of wine for the appetizer, but thought it was a taste, and would then be followed by an adequate glass when the appetizer was served, but that was not the case.. Again this happened with the main course. The only adequate pour was the dessert wine. Hindsight we should have brought our own bottle ($45 corkage) and had two nice glass each or ordered a bottle off of their list.
I will say that the food was delicious and beautifully plated. The service was excellent and the ambiance is just beautiful inside and out. I was very excited to celebrate my birthday at this beautiful restaurant. I do feel, however, that the wine pairing needs to be reviewed by the person that sets the prices. I was very dissatisfied with the amount of wine poured for the price!!
This restaurant is part of a Relais & Chateaux property, and as such, we would have expected a combination of a spectacular setting, excellent service, and creative cuisine. We were happy with the setting and the service, but somewhat disappointed with the cuisine. The dishes were simple and well-presented but lacked the imagination that raises good cuisine to the next level. My starter was nothing more than sliced heirloom tomatoes with an uninspiring vinaigrette, and my entree three small pan-seared scallops with a few vegetables on the side (same vegetables were served with my husband's salmon entree). Kudos to the pastry chef, though, for a very tasty and creative apple, caramel and chocolate dessert. Overall, a pleasant setting but not a gourmet destination.
